Softer Tip Iron Shafts

Im experimenting with softer tipped iron shafts. From PX Tour Flight 105 S to the Modus 3 Tour 105 S.

My flushed shots are smooth, high ball flight, and stop dead on the greens. But Ive noticed Im hitting a lot more shots thin than ever. Is this a common issue using softer tipped shafts? I only have 2 rounds with these so, im expecting an adjustment period but, I really would rather not fit ME to the shaft, if thats what is going to be required. Just wanted to see others experience and if this is common. And whether or not I WILL adjust to them, or if I should just go back to the PX. But when hit well, im getting the ball flight and spin that I want.

The tip stiffness isn't the reason you are thinning shots.  It's your swing.  Sometimes a different feeling shaft will affect a persons swing, though, so maybe the issue is related.  Or maybe you just put a bad swing on the ball.

Thin shots are a result of weight or swing weight changes.

Fair point, but going from almost never hitting it thin to hitting a few per round seemed a little sketchy. The shaft weights are almost identical, but I did not check the swing weights yet.

Double check they are cut the proper length….i had an 8 iron re-shafted after I broke it in my stupid hot head days. 
 

I play 1/4-1/2 inch long (depending on the brand). The shop did not cut it to the proper length. 
 

At least I figured it out in the very first range session. 🤣😝

I cut them myself when I built them. So that's good. But I played my 3rd round with them today. I think ive smoothed out my tempo a bit with these shafts and were hitting them pretty flush today. Just needed a short adjustment period and am very happy with them.

Everyone can be different but I have found I tend to hit thin and don’t get the club into the turf if my total weight and Swingweight are too low. If total weight is too high then I have to work hard to lift the club and then end up hitting fat.

Did you make sure you matched the swing weights before and after the shaft change?

 

With a softer tip and enough swing speed, you may also have to refit for lie angle.

I wouldn't say thin is common but it's not unheard of either.    More common are general dispersion issues, accuracy and shot shape control problems - anything related to release timing.

 

Only time will tell whether or not you can adjust.   Some people can, some people can't.   And even if you can, no telling how long it might take. 

 

But FWIW, this is exactly one of the main reasons that it's not recommended to try and chase launch and spin numbers with a shaft change.  If you need a bit more (or less) launch and spin, next time just get the lofts bent to adjust.

Just a little update. Took me about 3 rounds to get use to these shafts. And they're incredible. Struggled with low Flighted irons my entire time golfing. (With a few swing changes) and these shafts, im hitting nice high shots, when needed. And last week actually shot par for the first time. (And possibly my last 🤣).

Best guess, soft tip depends on your tempo being consistent. If your swing tempo is at all off, your hands will be in the wrong position while the tip flexes upward thinning the shot.  Going from flighted shafts to standard might be contributing too. Also, the bend profile of Mod 3 Tour-S is under the grip, so near mid-high, different from the softer PX Tour Flight 105-S.

EI profile can cause mishits, however, it probably has more to with how your swing is reacting to the different feel of the shaft.
