Custom golf clubs for tall casual golfer.

i played a bit of golf from about 15-18 with standard garage sale clubs I bought for 50 bucks. Probably use to shoot mid to high 50s for 9.

I am now 34 since then I have played Mabey once a year same clubs and shoot mid 50s. same clubs which feel too small.

I have moved somewhere with a cheep corse and not much else to do so looking to play regularly. want to get a new set of irons, but I don’t think I have played enough for a real fitting to be super benificial and I kinda just wanna get clubs a good size and my swing will mold a bit to them, then after a year or so get a fitting and just sell the others if they are way off.

I am 6’3 (actual height no shoes ) and WTF of just under 38 inches in shoes.

Im thinking Takomo 101s but

im kinda stuck between plus a half inch or plus a full inch. And 2 up or 3 up… or any combo of the two,

just wondering if anyone has any advice on terms of deviating away from a standard set I have played for years knowing it’s too small. Or if someone has had a similar situation.

It’s really a shot in the dark without getting fitted.

Ping has a chart which is their starting point for fitting. The fitter then tries different combinations of length and lie angle to fine tune the selection.

You need height and WTF measurement with your golf shoes on.

The chart will give you an idea, but you really need a fitting.

Thanks @st1800e. I had forgotten about that chart and found this discussion interesting, because I’m 6’3“ and play +3/4“, 2° upright, but my WTF Iis at 34“, which in the chart points to 0° or even 1° flat.
This resonates with my feel: I seem to have a draw/hook bias with my irons and thought about going flatter.
It’s a swing issue, first of all, but maybe this will help a bit. My woods are fade-y, so…

To the OP, in my experience, longer than 3/4“ is not recommended, unless you’re 6‘7“ with short arms. Swingweight becomes a factor. For me, going from +1/2“ to +3/4 was the ticket, though.
Is there a pro shop near you that assembles clubs? You could buy two similar 7i or 8i clubheads used and have them put in shafts at different lengths- or do a fitting just to determine your specs.
Forged irons are easy to bend, but shaft length is harder to alter.

I’m similar height, just under 6’4”, and similar WTF, I play +1” and 2* upright. My fitter only used the Ping chart above so I don’t know if I’m in the ideal fit for me but I know I play a lot better and have much better contact since changing from standard length. I’m curious if I went to a better fitter if I’d end up in the same set up.

I had a bit of problem with a new account and not telling me it was approved and posted….

I have ordered Takomo 101s, plus an inch, 2 degrees upright regular flex shaft.big grips. (Wanted 3/4 but No 3/4 inch option but I figure I can choke down a quarter inch)

this is really just a jumping off point having only really played with too short a clubs I have seen (on video) I’m way to hunched and way to bent knees, never really developed a Matrual swing just made it work… so I don’t think I could work through that in a short fitting…

also regular flex, suits me as I want to work on technique rather than swinging out of my shoes… but if I do play regularly I feel I will likely move towards stiff shafts in a year or 2.

so my theory is. Buy clubs close to my static recommendations with a flex that forces me to relax a bit, Big grips cause I get a bit of hand issues, and just try play enough over the next year or so that either I know they are a good fit or I know what I need to change and get good enough for an effective fitting …. If I have to change Takomos are selling second hand around me not much less than new (cause you avoid the wait time) and those customisation arnt that rare that they will be tough to sell.

I’ll update in the 10000 weeks when they arrive and I start swinging them.

I have 1 additional question…. Say I wanted to just swing relaxed and smooth on 5-p and use my 4 iron to get after it or as a driving iron off the tee (it’s a big head low loft iron), would it be crazy to throw a stiff shaft in just it at some point and just have it as the one club I try ding a couple with…. As long as I know it’s different and I play it different I can’t see a problem with the flex confusing me…. Anyone tried this? obviously I’ll wait and feel it, but yea I kinda want somthing I can still try whackkkk without it noodling…

(I do not hit driver and I don’t know if I see that changing soon as I have just never ever had success with it…)
