2025 Open Championship in Portrush

Lowry hit the stick , stick makes ball move = Penalty.  Does intent play into the rule or is just causation?

I've been critical of Shane in the past. But props to him for being honest in the post round, accepting the penalty, stating his case and moving on.

Lowry assessed a 2-stroke penalty, per the internet.

That's just brutal luck. He wasn't even swinging close to his ball, wasn't looking at his ball, and was only "caught" because a camera happened to be zoomed in. That same thing probably happened a dozen times on the course today, but nobody was there to see it.

Yep, it is a guarantee that it happened other times today but those players weren't in contention so it did not get noticed.

I totally get it.  Tiger in 2005 at same age of Scottie was married too and just recently I think had his first child but you could still envision the guy going to the bar and getting sloshed or even he and his wife having their sitter watch the kid for a night and getting sloshed together.  I so cannot envision Scottie or his wife doing that.  I'd guess the dude was Mormon if I did not know he was not

The link you posted is from the pre-2019 rules. That said I don't think it's any difference now (just too lazy to go look for it. LOL)

But note, in the link it says "1) when video reveals evidence that could not reasonably be seen with the “naked eye,” (no penalty).

And, imo, there's the rub. I kinda agree with Footwedge. When the golfer takes a practice swing, he's looking at the spot where the ball would've been. And at that point, the ball moves enough to be seen a mere 12 inches away from him. He should've seen it move.

But that aside, whether he was looking at it or not, is not what you posted said. Video evidence is admissible, and imo, that movement could definitely have been seen from 5+ feet above the ball.

Shane did a great job taking the penalty and moving. But I wasn't surprised to hear him say that he didn't see it move in real time, and that the officials already had their mind made up when he got to the scorer's table. He handled it as best he could. I just don't like the idea that the sport brags about players calling their own penalties, and then intervenes when they want a certain ruling. If he weren't in Scottie's group, it probably doesn't get caught. How many other players are getting zoomed in camera views of their ball?

Scottie, his wife, and their friends went straight from the airport to a local bar after they flew in from Scottie winning The Masters. His wife was the one who suggested it.

Agree with this statement 100%. If the decision is already made, why ask? Just so you can give the guy the opportunity to be a martyr? What’s the point?

Dude.  I used to live in Salt Lake and plenty of Mormons got sloshed.  Very good people too.
