I’ve not said he was a garbage person.  By all accounts he’s very decent. Good for him. By the way that vid is from Royal Troon last year.

I know. I literally typed that it was from Troon. Just pointing out that he does sign. A quick google search will show hundreds of photos of him signing. I grabbed the 1st Open I saw. I have no idea why Scottie didn't sign the day you attended. Perhaps he was scheduled for media. Maybe he had some corporate obligation w/ Nike or Rolex. Maybe he just wanted to get a moment with his son before they put him down for the night. There are endless legitimate reasons. Professional athletes are asked for signatures and photos constantly. None of them stop at every opportunity. If Scottie was in the habit of brushing off kids, we'd know about it. The media loves noting more than knocking a guy off his pedestal.

Those kids will be cheering for someone else next time. And then Scheffler can complain some more about the crowd wanting someone else to win.  He does not seem to realize he is blest to play a game beloved by so many. He says he was called to play golf - is that unlike you or me ? Sure he is phenomenal but pretty sure he does not appreciate the significance of the game in the lives of others.

You don't know that.

lol ... when did he complain about the crowd wanting someone else to win? ... good grief, one time he doesn't acknowledge some kids, he becomes an ogre who is greedy and selfish and out to ruin people's lives ...

got to love the internet!!

As @Dutch1008 mentioned, this kind of thing has been on repeat for decades now, and Tiger has a hype machine both through intent and through happenstance that feeds into it. Almost every noteworthy shot of Tiger's got some kind of feature with other pros talking about how amazing it was.

They don't do that with Scottie. Partially because most of his greatest stuff is right from the middle of the fairway, but also because he simply doesn't have to recover as often. Tiger was also the forerunner to golfers realizing they should be going for it in 2 on every par 5 they can. He was the only one who both got the memo and had the strength so for a while it made for him doing things no one else was doing. I'll give you that contrasted with the old guard on their reserved, "You'll learn" outlook makes it easier for Tiger to stand out, and that at times Tiger did get into it by marching after the ball or letting more smiles slip after a blistered iron, but most of Tiger's greatest shots as in some clips already posted came with the same lack of reaction as we see from Scheffler during most of his greatest efforts.

Can't forget the Earl effect either; if Scottie's dad were out there saying some of the out there things Tiger's dad did that alone would get more buzz going around Scheffler.

Tiger came up in a perfect storm to turn him into a star; Scottie is simply what most golfers are, relatively reserved and boring out on the course, and plays a by-the-numbers game that makes for little flash if that's what someone's looking for.

I guess “they” are getting one goin for him

Must have caused you some heartburn to see that one BSC.   Impressive. Let’s see how it goes from here. My moneys still on Tiger in the end.

Let's see what Scottie's win percentage is when he's 48.  Love Scottie but that just not a fair stat.  Need to go by where they stand after a certain number of majors.

Since Scottie's first major win, 2022 Masters, 4 wins of last 16 majors played --25% win rate. Tiger over his first 16 majors played since his first major win was 5/16 or 31.25%. Tigers next 4 years (16 majors played) was 3/16 or 18.75%. We shall see how Scottie compares over the coming years.

I believe Tiger had 8-10 majors when he was 29.

I saw SS is matching TW from the time he won his first manager until his open win. To the exact day!

So now, he just needs to win 11 more 🤣

Until now, SS has been sorta able to fly under the radar as far as Tiger type scrutiny

But now he’s actually being compared to TW. It will get intense and the pressure to win ratchets up. I imagine it’s gotta mess with your mind.

Sorry, my guy, but that's nothing compared to the way they paraded any and everything Tiger did from day one. Scottie is not hyped in nearly the same way Tiger was by everyone: announcers, other players, sponsors, entertainment television at the time, every sports show, and so on. Stats blurbs were only a drop of what went down with Tiger.

So do you think the same about MJ?

Was his rock star status a result of media hype?

Both of those stats are why we should maybe just pump the brakes on the ‘Scotty is the new Tiger’ train.  He’s dominating right now, but he has such a long way to go before he matches Jack or Tiger’s dominance.

I've not read anyone on any platform that has said Scotty is the new Tiger or Jack ... I've read comparisons with Tiger's statistics, which is not the same as equating SS's accomplishments with Tiger's or Jack's ... literally haven't read anything equating SS to Tiger or Jack in any way ... since SS is at a level that is higher than anyone since Tiger, people are using Tiger for a reference, though comparison is obviously not the equivalent of equating ... have you seen someone claim SS has equaled Tiger? ... I'd like that link ...

The point isn't that Tiger was all hype, it's that everything he did was hyped for various reasons and it was something he was fine being a part of. Scottie doesn't feed into it in any way, nor has there been the same push for it even in the biggest moments by anyone else like there was with Tiger. I mean, Jack was blowing up records but he was thought of as boring and reserved and neither played into nor got any of the hype Arnold did. Their levels of greatness or accomplishment aren't directly reflected by how the media and talking heads portray them, and Scottie still doesn't get the same reception and broadcasting of what he does as Tiger even when he matches Tiger's stats, also for various reasons.

Everyone including the media has their favorites. Even if Scottie hits some wild Hail Mary impossible shot to get his grand slam it won't be played up anything like Tiger's saves from even normal tournaments, some of that likely owing to Scottie's probable nonchalance that will accompany it, but low hype it will be.

I think you have it backwards.

The media hype followed TW. Just like it followed MJ.

MJ and TW got the fans attention, they went nuts, and the media jumped on board. That’s what they do.

If SS inspires the fans as they did, the media hype will follow.

Like if he wins 2 majors next year, he will  really be front and center. And then if he keeps winning at TWs pace, be huge hype.

From 1923 to 1930 Bobby Jones won 62% of the majors that he played.  64% of the major national championships (US Open, Open Championship)

Yes, it was a different era, but relative to his peers, Jones was pretty good.

From 1861 to 1867 Old Tom Morris won 4 of the 7 Opens he played in.  At that time the Open was the only major in the world.  57% of winning all the majors.  Another different era but superlative amongst his tough level of competion.  Old Tom Morris was really really good.
