Darren Clark mentioned the skills of shotmaking are diminishing due to equipment and American style golf. That’s why older guys still have a chance in the Open.  Even guys in their 50’s can contend if they have a good week.

In my opinion Bryson struggles at places where being out of position actually has consequences. Augusta's trees between holes and bordering the course are so tall you can't simply hack it back over them. At a British Open venue he is at the mercy of the tall grass lottery. At Oakmont the combo of rough and greens was actually enough to overwhelm his style. 

 

His Winged Foot win involved a ton of "blast it down, hack it out", even from 2 fairways over...  I think his Pinehurst win was partially to do with the waste areas preventing his ball from rolling deep enough into the trees to not have a shot. 

 

I think at Augusta he has tried reining it in of late and his results have dramatically improved, but something about the wide open looking spaces of the links courses make him go bomb and blast into the fescue.

Phil has been there done that. His scope of the game is broader than Bryson. He has more shots in the bag than Bryson.

Proper analysis. And playing around the greens the American way by using the lob wedge for every chip shot doesn’t help either. Although players like Rory and Fleetwood also played those shots quite a few times without much success.

Not sure I'm in love with this course to be honest.  Seems crammed together and on tv, there is inadequate contrast. I can't follow the ball,  i can't tell where they're aiming. .. doesn't seem all that "linksy" either.

It is around holes 9 & 10 I believe. It is for the players only. It is around a congested area on the course and it helps the players move to the tee. Interesting anecdote. Hideki is apparently claustrophobic and refuses to walk through it.
