Still own vintage 1, 3 & 4 wood MacGregor M-85's.   They've been refinished & re-shafted, which is their only flaw.  They sure are pretty . . . but I couldn't imagine having to play with them in the modern era.

 

"No metal woods" would be a big change.  I suspect golf ball industry would have to completely revamp their product.

 

Have to wonder ... would mandating construction which increased ball spin make the game harder or easier?   I think it'd roll back distance off the tee . . . .

On shorter courses I like to play persimmon driver off the tee on par 4's and 5's with a Wilson Duosoft ball since softer compression modern balls have slower ball speed and Wilson Duosoft is the softest currently. It's a lot more fun for me that way and it's the closest I could replicate persimmon and balata.

Only difference I can imagine is the Duosoft doesn't spin anywhere near as much as balata.

 

When I was a kid growing up in golf (I was blessed, very blessed), there was a guy at my dad's club who'd played some pro baseball when he was younger.    Played the old X-31 woods & irons and a Titleist ball.

 

We loved watching him hit driver - the ball started low then climbed like a plane taking off (none of us realized at the time that was actually "bad," too much spin).

 

I really wonder whether mandating "spiny" balls (if they could figure that out) might solve a lot of the distance complaints.

Yes, that very driver was given to Rory.  And there is a video somewhere of him hitting hit - really well - after which he exclaims, "I could play in any era."

By the way, I was taking old clubs to Goodwill last week, and I almost included a MacGregor Louise Suggs driver which I bought for my ex many, many years ago.  But I kept that one because I would like to hit it once.  It is a beautiful club, which I should photo and share.
