Going Back to X

Yo, all. I’ve experienced some good results these past 3-4yrs with really light, regular flex steel iron shafts. That being said, I also really like super stiff shafts in my woods, for stability and one-piece feel. My current iron shafts(KBS Max-R) are close to senior flex IMO, and I believe that huge contrast vs my woods is taking its toll. The shaft droop alone has got to be huge with these noodles, and I’m really looking to tighten feel for better dispersion. 
 

I think the main reason these particular  R shafts have worked well in the past is more about a lighter weight, than flex. I just reshafted my irons with Modus 105X, to more closely mimic my driver/fw. Hopefully, this experiment will serve me well. I used to play DG X100 religiously, once upon a time, so these are much more in line with my norm. The whippy KBS shafts just worked great awhile back, so I just went with it, but now I think I’m starting to seriously lose shots because of them. Wish me luck.

I’m very much in the same camp with Stiffer shafts in my woods 

 

Driver…Aldila Xtorsion Copper 60TX

5W .… Tensei Orange 75s tipped 1/2” over recommended 

7w Veylix Rome 888  that is S+ or my other 7w which I go back to now and then which has a PX 8C4 6.0 (tip stiff)

 

My favorite iron shafts are Ping AWT 2.0 regular or Modus 105R

 

i played DG X100’s for around 20 years

 

I don’t know my swing speed due to hitting balls on a GC Quad without dots on the clubface, but my Ball speed with a driver is 164-168mph (I’m 49 with arthritis) so probably around 113mph and my 7 iron ball speed is 121-123mph with a 33-34° 7 iron , so probably around 92mph swing speed, not to far off from PGA tour average, but paltry compared to WRX’rs 😝 

 

I don’t know if it’s just me or something to do with club length or even the profiles I like, but with the woods, I feel there is a loading feeling that I do not get with say a DG X100 or a PX 6.0, but I find I do get a similar loading feeling with regular flex shafts, and to a lesser extent some stiff flex shafts in certain profiles , but with the regular flex shafts like a SF i95r, DG 105R, Modus 105R or the AWT 2.0R, there is a definitive load feeling 

 

I “FEEL” I get that loading feedback similar to my Aldila Xtorsion Copper 60TX in a DG 105R or a DG 100 Mid s300
 

Since I like the feedback from the loading feeling in my irons, my dispersion has gotten better. I have never thought about shaft droop, but I have noticed that I used to be standard lie on my irons with DG X100’s and now with the softer shafts, I’ve tested at 1° upright, I figured that was due to swing changes, but I never thought about shaft droop or toe drop. 
 

I made some swing changes, in the past when I was hitting DG X100’s I would have a strike pattern slightly heel side and played a big draw, my misses were always thin, now with softer flex shafts, I notice my strike pattern is more middle to slightly toe side, but my misses are still thin at times, most often in the longer irons though, but I’ve changed my path to be more neutral, so I’m pretty straight, with a slight draw 

 

I chalked a lot of things up to swing changes and have never thought about shaft droop, or toe drop, but I have been taking more turf since switching to softer shafts, and hit a bit higher on the face now,  that is why I just bought a set of Ping i200’s. Ive found that I have been getting along with Pings more now, whereas I played Mizuno blades for most of my golfing life. 
 

Perhaps there were things I never considered about the dynamics, other than feel, but it’s working for me, so I feel no need to change

 

As far as Modus 105x, I had one in a 3 iron that I bought online to test shafts out, before moving into a Modus 105s in my 5-PW. The Modus 105x should be a good transition from Regular flex, they felt pretty smooth with not much of a kick, it felt more linear to me with a softer tip, so not harsh or boardy at all……. I just preferred a bit more give than the X-Flex

Good luck with the change and I hope it works out.  KBS MAX in R feels vastly different than Modus 105X which you probably know already  Hope it works for the better.
