Removal of Shaft Adapter in Driver Head

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi, folks. I have a G410 head with an adapter snapped off within the head (without the shaft). Don't ask how it happened, I don't know.

I tried to pull it with pliers but I think there is epoxy holding the adapter to the head. Turing the screw doesn't seem to have any effect (the screw is just loose in the head). I am considering heating with a torch but am a bit concerned about melting something I can't see inside.

Does anyone have any experience, tips, or tricks? Thanks in advance!

EDITED TO ADD:

I've reached my post limit for the day, but I wanted to say that rexroh is a genius and the suggestion worked. I was able to get the screw to catch and pound out the collar far enough to grab it with pliers. There is a bunch of epoxy or adhesive on the fitting. I appended it to this updated post.

Thanks to rexroh and everyone else for all of their great suggestions!

Haven't had to do it myself - but I'd try to remove the screw then find a steel rod (or maybe even a screw driver) that is small enough to fit in the screw hole.  Put it through from the bottom and use a rubber mallet to try and "push" (gently pound) out the adapter.

Ping adapters are known to get a little stuck so being hard to get out isn't really any indicator that epoxy is holding it in.  And almost zero chance if you got it new/are the original owner.

Thanks for the suggestion. I can't back the screw out, but if I figure out how to do that, I will try your suggestion.

I am not the original owner and I can see a lot of epoxy in the adapter but am not sure if is between the adapter and the head.

So it sounds like you never had the occasion to remove the shaft or make an adjustment while you owned it?

It's extremely rare to see someone glue in an adapter (and not report it when it's sold) but there certainly are no limits to what kind of crazy things people are capable of when it comes to dealing with used clubs.

Yeah, I received it like this. The images in the for sale post didn't show that part of the head clearly. I tried to get a refund. This is a great lesson on paying the 3% to use Goods and Services through Venmo or Paypal.

I am guessing it's not epoxied in there, but I can't say for certain and I also don't have many other options since I can't get a good purchase on the small portion of the adapter that is exposed. I think the torch is coming out soon, but I'll give it a while to see if anyone has other ideas.

Is the shaft fully gone or still left over inside the adaptor? Remove the rest of the broken shaft if its still in the adaptor, and I would maybe try to use a soldering iron with a tip (or bolt, sanded down if needed) that fit snugly inside the adaptor. Would be less likely to damage anything inside the head, and would still get hot enough to loosen epoxy.

Shaft is gone and I can just see epoxy (can't see all the way to the screw). I may try the soldering iron first. It will be messy, but I agree that's probably safer. The only thing I was thinking is that heating up the outer collar to make it expand may be better to get separation, but I could let it cool before I torch it if the iron doesn't work.

Glad you got it out.

It actually looks more like aluminum oxide (the result of oxidation) than epoxy.   Not that it matters but you could use heat to tell whether it's epoxy or not.  Heat will noticeably soften epoxy but not the oxidation, vinegar might help a bit with that.
