TM p790 upgrade

Simply put, I have a set of TM P790 irons that I cannot stand the sound of. They play well 2021 version. And they play well, as every review says. Is the 2025 version worth the upgrade? I play the Bridgestone J15 forged CB irons and love the feel, but the distance loss is just too much? Is it worth the upgrade from the 2021 p790s, especially in feel to the 2025 version?

Lots of other options in that players distance category unless you're set on the P790.

If I were you depending on how your game progressed with those clubs. I would seek to transition into a player's iron for that feel you're seeking, you could even bend them strong if you want more distance and have the feel.

Go hit those clubs at your local PGASS; Zx7, T150, Cobra King tour, Taylormade P7cb or P770.

The P790 offers a lot of ball speed and forgiveness. Irons such as the Zxi7 are top-notch but will perform much closer to your J15CBs (great irons).

The feel of the filled-head irons has improved quite a bit. If I played the P790 and wanted an iron with similar distance performance and similar tech but considerably better feel, I would start with a demo of the Callaway ai200 and ai150.

Could also look at the Titleist T250. Those 3 will be similar in what the tech brings you in ball speed and speed retention on mishits, as is the Srixon Zxi5, which has a slightly different construction. Ping i530 is another possibility.

Lots of options, but only you know what looks good to you.

Absolutely - if you're very sensitive to feel and sound suggest you try and hit some different options. Hard to know what you like with us guessing.

IMHO, there are other options then as the P790 improvements are subtle from 21-25 (Gen 1 and 2 were more noticable to my feel-o-meter), so don't try to force it if you are not happy. I happen to enjoy them for what they are, and have for years now. I could game Srixon, Cobra Kings etc...just the same, I just happened to start here and stayed.

There is no free lunch however: no hollow will feel like a good CB, just ain't happening (I gamed the OG 770s, wonderful 1025 clubs, and no subsequent gen has come close). I have found Srixons and the Cobras to feel quite good, and if I was clean slate and not already happy with the 790 look and feel all these years, they would be on my try list for sure along with some Mizzy models.

The 2021 P790's are about a degree stronger than the J15's. How much distance loss are you actually seeing? Sure the P790 has some tech that will increase the ball speed, but for ME, loft is the primary driver of ball speed not face tech. If you are hitting the J15's solid enough, and high enough, they should go far enough.

If you want the tech/help of the P790's but don't like them, try:

Miz JPX 925 Forged & Hot Metal (Try mizuno first if feel is the issue)
Titleist T150, T250
Callaway Ai150, Ti Fusion Plated
TM P770
Srixon Zxi5

About 4 years ago I took my J15 cb to Club Champion to compare primarily against the PXG but with an open mind. At a local course I had the J15's lofts decreased a degree or 2. Comparing the P790 [2021] to the J15cb forged 6 iron, there was a 5 or 6 mph ball speed difference. That is considerable. I purchased the P790s with Nippon Modus 3 S shafts and tried to get over the sound. Even my playing partners noticed the sound was clanky. I blamed it on myself, but eventually went back to the J15s. I also play Miura TC-201 irons with Oban CT 115 S on occasion. That's a lot of blabbing, but I thought that someone else could chime in on whether an upgrade helped them. Thanks to all who contributed.
