Question about mixing weights in iron shafts

Ok all you builders out there I have a question on something I’ve been pondering. Looking at having some irons built and have the idea of putting a 105g shaft in my long irons (5–7/8) and then a 120g in the 8/9-Gw.  When I get in to my 8/9 area I seem to do a lot better with heavier weighted shaft vs the lighter. Is this something others have done and what should I expect?  Looking at Dart V shafts in particular. Thanks for any input.

Dynamic Gold (Wedge) shafts are far and away the most popular wedges shafts, and many people mix those with their much lighter iron shafts.

 

Bottom line: play what works for your game.  Using heavy wedge shafts is very common.

Yeah I’m the same with wedges, play heavier in them vs irons. But switched to graphite several years ago but thinking 105g in the 5-7/8 and then 120g in 8/9-G. Then my SW and LW are 128g.

... I have a 15gm difference in my wedges. I played Steelfiber i95's and wanted to try a lighter shaft and re-shafted my 5-9 irons with i80's. I kept the i95's in my 58/54/50/46 wedges and as such as I would like to say the heavier weight gives me more control while the lighter shafts are easier to swing, when I am playing and focused on my shots I don't notice any difference in the i95's or i80's. I have a 95mph driver swing with a smooth transition which may be a factor compared to hard hitters with an aggressive transition that may find lighter weight shafts more difficult to time.

That’s kind of where I’m at. The heavier weight in shorter irons helps me time things up better where as the longer irons the lighter weight seems easier to swing. Kind of like the transition from woods to irons to wedges.

My progression is different in terms of which iron I step the weight up on, but I do the same with the Dart Vs. 120 for 6 into the wedges, 105 for anything below including driving irons. If you can I'd test before going all in, but worst case you'd only have to swap out a few of the shafts if it doesn't work for you.

 

I did test 105 in the 6 beforehand and didn't personally find any difference in dispersion, flight, and so on, just liked the feel overall of staying with 120 above the 5.

I like the weight progression also, I did try True Temper AMT white and black for a while. Messed around with some Nippon Modus 125 - 120 - 105  with no sucsess and I am now into Graphite which seems better… 

I have MMT 105 scoring wedge in the wedges and PW my Srixon irons will get Axiom 105 shafts soft stepped 2x

Playing the Dart V 120's, and at the end of the year, I'll probably be putting 105's in my 4 and 5 irons. Can't play 105's in my short irons, but at 61yo, probably need them in the long irons.

I've played AMT White the last few years, and had similar weights in the long irons.

I know I’ll be switching to a set up similar to what I said early on. Just gotta find the iron where it switches. Prob gonna be the 7 or 8 but we’ll see.

There aren't any yet but I hope one of the major shaft OEMs offer ascending weights as an option.  It would probably fit a small percentage of golfers(marginal profits) but it would be nice for us older guys/gals.

I had the Recoil proto 125 F5 and tested the 110 when they were first released back in the day.  Not much difference besides the weight.  Same higher launch and mid spin with decent feel.

Good to know.  I have the MMT-125TX and they still work great even though I'm older.  There will be a day though where I can definitely see the benefit of ascending mass graphite shafts.  Thanks for the heads up.

Of those the only possibility might be the Tensei White. I can’t do anything less than 100g in irons, just doesn’t work for my swing.
