Carrying a 7-wood & 9-wood?

currently carrying Driver, 7-wood & , a 3-rescue.  I can hit the G430 7-wood fairly well, but I tried my Sons G440 9-wood and wow! I really liked the feel a felt way better.  Any reason not to carry both the seven and nine wood? Or just too close redundancy?

As long as  you aren't carrying more than fourteen clubs I think it is a good idea to see if the G440 9W really is a great club or whether it was just a shiny new object!

For a while I carried two 58 wedges, one high bounce and the other low bounce.  The low bounce was great for picking the ball off of bare dirt lies.

I have both a  7W and 11W but most likely I'd only carry one for long Par 3s.  I can look up the yardage at home and choose the club that seems most appropriate.

No reason not to as long as the clubs gap correctly.

I’m 4 wood, 7 wood and heavy ponder on 9 wood. G440. Think I’d replace my 6 iron, but it knows and has performed quite well for the past several rounds. I believe it also knows there’s a dark damp corner in my basement with spiders. Other clubs, mostly drivers and even a few bowling balls had resided there. After a few weeks, they learn.

Long story short, 7 and 9 is the new 3 and 5. If it works, do it. This is golfwrx after all.

I’m with Jam. I have a 4 and 7 wood G440 and a 9w G440 on order to replace my hybrid.  Do it!

Would it be fair to say a 7 and 9 fairway wood compete with a matching hybrid?...just  curious what the difference might be...For the past two yrs I have been using a 5,6 and 7 hybrid with good success...those are 24,27 and 30 degree clubs...

My current setup is...7W...9W...3H...5H...7H...6i...8i...

To me the 9W is its own beast and nothing else can compare to it.  It goes so high and is so easy to hit.  I use it when I want to make sure I am sticking to the green at 170 to 190.  Whenever I have a chance to use it, a big smile comes over my face.  Distance wise its similar to my 5H, but completely different ball flight and ease of use.  And my 5H is pretty easy to use, so that tells you how insanely easy the 9W is.  I have been working on flighting the 9W down.   If I ever get a knack for it, the 5H can come out of the bag.  It probably won't, but I would have the option.

My 7W and 3H compete with eachother a bit in terms of distance.  The 7W is easier to get height and distance, while the 3H is easier for me to hit straight.  So my miss with the 7W is right to left, while my miss with the 3H is front to back.  I have both in the bag right now for 200+ yard shots, to give me flexibility in that decision making process.  If I am trying an aggressive approach shot to stick the green from 200+ out, I will use the 7W.  But if a right/left miss will get me in trouble, I can't use it.  That's when I go with the 3H.

My 7W and 9W are not alike.  The 9W is a reliable 170-190 high flying club that does what it is supposed to do nearly every time I use it.  The 7W goes 200-230 for me, with a right/left dispersion that I have to take into account when using it.  The 7W easily replaced 3W/5W for me.  But there is no comparison between 7W and 9W for my game.

I did a 7wood and 9wood for a few months and just recently dropped the 9wood for a 4 hybrid.  I started getting a little squirrely with 9 wood on some approaches where I needed a tighter dispersion.  I will probably swap out the shaft in the 9wood to something else in the future but for now the 4hy goes the distance I need it to go. I did love the height that the 9wood would send it when compared to the 4hy though.

As most have mentioned regarding this topic, it definitely depends on your gapping.  While a majority of golfers would benefit with either a 7 or 9-wood in the bag, I feel, more likely than not, having both would be redundant.  I feel if you're a slower SS player, having woods within 3 degrees of each other could get awfully close to a 10 yard gapping, which I personally don't think is a good usage at the top end.  You might see pros or high SS players with both a 7 and 9 in the bag, especially with courses playing 7500+, if they expect numerous approaches in the ~230-250 range.  Plus, they are more than capable of dropping a wedge from the bag when needed...Most amateurs would benefit from a larger gap at the top of their bag, but if you aren't having trouble filling out 14 clubs, who am I to judge!

I have a GT1 9-wood on order, for two reasons.  1, to replace a 5-hybrid.  2) to pair with driver and 5-wood, 7-iron 9-iron in a Sunday afternoon 7 club bag.

I was in the same spot you were, I had Driver, 3 wood, 7 wood, and had a 4 utility that I never used off the tee, and hated off the turf, add to that - I don’t get along with hybrids. So I went and got a 9 wood Elyte with a 80x Denali black from a member off WTB to complement my 7 wood Paradym AI smoke with a 80X kaili white. And it’s been EXCELLENT. I have about a 13-15 yard gap between them carry wise, and whereas the 7 drops pretty well but still has some roll, the 9 wood drops DEAD, so total speaking I bet it’s closer to 15-17.

I play a 5, 7, 9, and 11 wood. The only club that is possibly redundant is the 6 iron. I love the 9 and 11 woods for the launch height. They are my 150 and 160 clubs. If I want to carry 150-155 with runout and lower trajectory, I choose the 6 iron. For a very good golfer, these may not be ideal. I’m happy with this setup.

I think it depends on your gaping numbers. 9 woods start getting towards the distance of my irons and for me I’d rather have an iron because it does better for me out of the rough. Now if it’s just odd the tee then yea 9 wood for sure.

Strange.  I find my 11 (9) wood much easier to hit from the rough than a 4 or 5 iron.  I guess that's why they make an assortment of clubs.

You can take a couple off while you are playing, and they shouldn't get scratched too much.  In my experience, a scratched fairway wood works just as good as a new, pristine one, so long as it fits.

Also, the old knit fairway wood covers take a lot less room if you want to go that way.
