Drivers that favor a 'fade bias'?

bulls9999

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if there are any recent driver selections (say among those in the last 2 years) that favor a fade bias instead of a draw bias?  Hitting a draw (by hitting the ball a little from the inside) is easy, but for some reason, I can't make myself hit fades (out-to-in).  Are there any drivers set up for fades?  Why are there adapter settings for draw and none for fade?

I had a similar problem until I went through Howard’s DIY, after cutting down the playing length to 44.5” and adding a bit of weight to the head (9g) , I’m now more neutral and can work the ball both ways

I still primarily play a draw, but it’s less pronounced

With that being said, I could not get the original TM SIM to turn over and had to flight it left to right in the hitting bay. At the time it was so foreign to me to aim left of target, that the SIM just didn’t work for me, it was too low spin for me as well

From what I understand the low spin pro models have a fade bias and the average hacker drivers are draw bias.

I can’t confirm though as i stay well clear of these types of clubs (fade bias ones).

Most drivers in their default settings are going to be somewhat neutral. The reason being is that the CG being in line with the center of the face maximizes ball speed. Lots of drivers have moveable weights, which can move the CG slightly to help offset a strike tendency.

If you want something more fade biased, look for a driver where there is more weight forward. Most are going to be low spin models. You may have to use a higher lofted head.

There really isn't such thing as a 'draw' setting on an adapter:

  • loft up/down will open/close the face (so lofting down will add some fade bias)
  • lie angle up/down will be a tiny bit of draw/fade bias (but it's almost negligible)

I was in the OG SIM since it came out, and only this year switched into an Elyte.  I gamed it because like you said it set up square, in addition to the higher launch and low spin.  New TM look almost shut to me.

Was difficult to find anything that had those numbers.  Elyte TD Max is just so forgiving.

Might sound crazy to some, but more of an upright lie angle helps me hit a fade.  I like to start more left and let it fall right.  Also, my swing tends to be a little more over the top than flat.  So the lie angle helps.

Some other things that have helped me:

- building up my grip with more tape on the lower hand

- weight in the toe

- cut my woods short with more weight in the head

- shaft that I can feel some load.  If the shaft is more stiff and boardy I tend to turn it over more.

However, ymmv.  These are some things that have worked really well for me over the years.

All the yes here.    Drivers that will allow you to move weight toe side AND have toe side forgiveness.  G440 LST/Max come to mind.

I fight the lefts and the AI Smoke TD is the most fade biased driver from the last 2 years, IMO.  It's been in the bag since last year and will probably be safe until maybe next year, lol.  It's also lower launching/spinning as well.  Pretty much a hooker's dream, lol.

I believe that any of the triple diamond heads (minus the new tour draw) are fade biased. LST line and model 4 Titleist drivers would fall under this category as well. Also de-lofting most modern driver heads will open the face. This increases the “fade bias.”

Yes, the triple diamond drivers are fade biased, however the AI Smoke TD is extremely fade biased.  I've tested pretty much all of them starting from the Epic line.  I've also tested the the LST line and "4" Titleist drivers as well.  Cranking open the face of the modern driver can help with the lefts, however does not always constitute fade bias.  I say that as someone who's played tour issue drivers cranked open up to 3* in the past.

It might be a massive difference coming from the Mizuno but the max head isn't that fade biased at all, in fact it was made because the Ai Smoke TD was too fade biased for a lot of players on tour. I turn it over quite easy.

Also, for the OP, stay away from the Elyte and go Ai Smoke TD. They basically took what they learned from the Ai smoke range and made almost every model less fade biased which is why it's so popular with regular golfers this year. The Elyte TD is actually a lot closer to the Ai Smoke TD max than it is to last years regular TD.
