As I mentioned, the younger generation of golfers at our course only watch YouTube golf, not PGA events. The look for different things in videos. The try replicate videos so the up side is that it’s inspiring the next generation of golfers. They want people that are real in front of the camera. They find pga events boring. My dad would never have watched YouTube golf. He was a traditionalist. I’m a fence sitter. I watch both but the generations younger than me are built different.

To the bolded...then explain Bryson's popularity.

*runs and ducks for cover

**also, can't stop laughing at the thought that these "influencers" with their very, very, very selectively cultivated images are considered "real" by kids today lol. Maybe explains some things if people think ANYTHING on social media is real.

sorry still don’t get it.

is it just a dig at liv?

bryson is popular everywhere he goes: YouTube, pga tour, major championships, liv, hooters..

Cheers 🍻 ss7

We were discussing that YouTube content and tour events are separate categories of entertainment.

Bryson is very popular on YouTube, but his popularity has done nothing to bring viewership to his tour.

okay thanks. Sorry I didn’t read the back story and I thought you were talking about all tours.

I think Bryson is still one of the biggest draws at majors.

but yeah, you could put Michael Jordan in the WNBA and it still wouldn’t raise ticket prices by that much for very long lol

He didn't really get much of a reception this afternoon, so I wouldn't say he's popular everywhere. Also doesn't really matter if people find him fun if it doesn't translate to viewership for his league or broad interest in the products he promotes.

are you basing this on a 5 second tv clip or were you there in person?

Either way, sounds like rock solid evidence that can put this convo to bed.

Who says he gives a crap about liv at all?

he cares about his personal brand and is he really not in the top 10 at worst for golfers globally? In terms of draw, income, etc.

I think you hitting on something here.

popularity - and what’s the demographic - and what’s there income/value to a tour/brand?

It's crazy how influencers like Grant think the tour will prioritize their content over a  $680M/year deal with ESPN, NBC/Golf Channel and CBS. What's even more mind-boggling is people like Wesley Bryan a former tour member can't grasp how media rights work.

I dont think Grant does expect them to prioritize him over them. They reached out to him. Why should he play in it not under his terms? This is like the cash buyers who cold call to buy your house they want but expect you to give it to them.

I suggest the Horvat/YouTube golfer haters watch the match he has woth Sheffler. They talk about these invites and Grant says then why he wouldn't accept one. SS pretty much tries to pressure him into doing it. Saying the tournament needs him and his following.

On a side note, I heard the type of money Grant is making. What kind of a living do you think he is making playing golf?

I doubt many people know how much he makes. There's way too many variables to consider. He could actually be losing money producing content. Many influencers do.

Two very good friends of mine (from since I was a kid - went to school with them from elementary to college ... hell, I get mentioned in their shows every so often) are among the biggest content creators; period - ~20M subscribers.

I know about how much they make. Imma tell yall right now GH ain't making the numbers a lot of yall seem to think he does.

Why should he play it on their terms?  You mean like the other 150+ golfers in the tournament?  Is he just super special?

BTW, the Tour did not reach out to him.  He got an invite through a SPONSOR’S EXEMPTION offered by the TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR (Not a PGA Tour employee) and approved the SPONSOR (Barracuda).

Finally, it’s not like your analogy at all.  A better analogy would be that a cash buyer just cold called you and offered you three times the value of your house, simply out of the goodness of their hearts, but the condition was that you had to leave the lawn furniture.  And you refused.  On principle.  So they moved on and gave the deal to someone else.

Basically he was offered an opportunity of a lifetime, to play in a professional PGA Tournament, which he absolutely does not deserve based on his competitive performance on the golf course.  And he turned it down because they refused to violate the terms of their multibillion agreements with the largest broadcasting companies in the world for him.  A YouGoober.

Sponsor money is personal, it’s not media rights money.   Also, define ‘a lot’, because to an entity such as the PGA Tour, $5 mil a year is a rounding error.

The typical YouGoober doesn’t have multimillion dollar endorsement deals.  They only get the YT monetization revenue, which is chicken feed.  It may be a decent gig for a person to get by on, but it’s not millions and millions of profit.

Been sayin’ this about YouTubers for years, but the fanboys just feel a compelling need to believe…

It's why it works right? Like ... the whole "influencer" racket. This whole thread is full of comments that make it exceedingly obvious how WELL it works. And the creators ain't the ones making the money. I'm sure GH makes a few bucks and gets to do some cool stuff but - as you've said - it comes with an expiration date. The "talent" has a short shelf life.

People also have a really warped idea of what an actual "endorsement deal" looks like.

He's making enough money that he purchased a $2.4 million dollar house less than a year ago. Public record, easy to find. Not bad for a 26-year old kid who plays golf most everyday and takes his boat out to go fishing on the days he's not on the course.

I mean, I guess he could be grinding out 60 hours a week in an office making $75,000 (like some of the middle-aged clowns in this thread who are bitching about him probably do).

He is making several million a year playing golf. More than the Korn Ferry players.
