Graphite iron shaft in a hybrid - should I tip it?

RCGA

Recommended Posts

I have a 39" "raw" length graphite iron shaft I want to install in a hybrid

I have a .355 to .370 brass shim.

Should I tip trim this at all?

Typically, .355 shafts are not meant to be tip trimmed.  They are usually made at discrete lengths for specific irons.  So it depends in which hybrid you’re planning to use it.  A 39” raw length, depending on the manufacturer, is a 1 or 2 iron length.  A two iron head is typically around 233 gms. In weight.  A 1 iron 7 gms. less.  A two iron is typically played at around 39.5” in length.  So, if your hybrid weighs around 233 gms. and you’re planning on playing it at 39.5”, then no tip trimmed would be needed.  For anything else you’ll need to make an adjustment.

Depends on what iron that shaft was designed for, how heavy is the hybrid head, and are the heads close in weight.

What shaft model is this? (brand, model, flex, Tip type)
What hybrid head number and head wgt?

Thats the questions before its possible to tell how to handle this.

In the case of the Recoil shafts, it's a 6 iron shaft

The shaft 39.00 uncut is the same as 990 mm = #3 iron shaft
That shaft is made to handle a head wgt of 240 grams (plus minus 2)
https://gd-asia.com.hk/products/tour-ad4

Iron heads is plus 7 grams as we go shorter, so WAS most hybrids.
#3 = 240 grams = strait in, zero tip trim (use a brass shim)
#4 = 247 grams = 0.5 tip trim (no need for a shim)
#5 = 254 grams = 1.0 tip trim (no need for a shim) CANT BE DONE

The shaft tip in this model is only 50 mm or right below 2 inches, so we will NOT be able to tip trim more than 0.5, since we need 1.25 for insert plus ferrule

Are those head weights with or without the adapter?

Adapter = Hosel = part of the head and head wgt.
The ferrule and epoxy (max 0.5 gram epoxy) is also part of head wgt.

- Hybrids USED to have the same wgt (#3 and H3 as example), but now we have to check each model to make sure
