Guide on how to save your golf iron ferrules! (should work on both graphite and iron shafts)

I couldn’t find much information on how to save golf ferrules, especially with graphite shafts. I saw a few comments about pouring hot water on them or applying heat, but I tried my own method that might be even simpler.

 

The last time I switched clubs I ended up melting/cutting off my ferrules and definitely regretted it. This time, I wanted to try something different and it turns out it was pretty easy, assuming there is no epoxy behind the ferrule.

Two issues to bring up with this method.

 

1. A lot of builders, myself included,  will epoxy ferrules to the shaft on installation. This method won't do much to ferrules installed with epoxy backing it. Especially with people who use beads or other media in the epoxy to add grit/fill space.

 

2. A lot of graphite shafts have aggressive taper profiles after their parallel tip sections. So sliding the ferrule as shown could crack them anyway when creating enough space for a puller or crowbar to get in to pull the heads off. Some pullers won't even have the clearance to have the ferrule sit where the vice clamp holds the shaft without having the ferrule be in the way or damaging it entirely.

 

 

Always good to see new methods populate, just wanted to add my two cents.

 

 

(PS safety first, probably would want to avoid having any blade in a position where it can slip and cut you.)

I do the same method. I have had an easier time by putting the club in the vise so the club is more vertical.

 

Iron shafts, I just wrap a wet paper towel around the ferrule while using the torch.

1. Yes, I would agree that if anyone uses epoxy on the ferrules this method is unlikely to work.  It would probably do damage to your shafts by doing any kind of twisting like that.  The custom ferrules I use from BB&F are so tight that no epoxy is really needed other than the excess that seeps out from the club head.

 

2. I didn't even think of this damaging my shafts.  If anything, I figured it would just stretch out the ferrule a bit, but that is a good point of caution.  The amount of space I created between the ferrule and hosel was enough for the shaft extractor I use.
