G440 irons

Recommended Posts

I have been playing the G410 irons since they first came out.

I demoed the G425 irons when they came out.  I liked my G410 irons better.

I demoed the G440 irons. They are a noticeable improvement over the previous models I have mentioned IMO.

I went with the retro lofts. I gained distance, height, spin and stopping power.

That is a nice endorsement. Good to see Ping making some improvements. I liked my G410s a lot several years ago, and really did not like my G425s. Went away from Ping after that, but would love to give the G440s a try.

Love me some G's, but the lofts on the newer 430 and 440 irons jumped the shark.  I'm greatly disappointed, being a dyed in the wool G-man, but I just don't want to use two gap wedges.  To each their own, though.

I'm with you. I'm not a loft jacking conspiracy theorist, but it bugs me because there are white lies sprinkled into truth. Yes, faster faces allow for slightly stronger lofts, but I doubt it's more than 2 degrees. In theory lower CG's would launch the ball higher with less spin. But most GI irons don't have lower CG's (dirty secret - it would reduce ball speed and conflict with marketing point #1 😉). The stock loft/lie of the "6 iron" in this set is 26 degrees, and is 37.75" long. I used the 6i because the 5i is probably unhittable for the people being fit into this club. The reason this 6i launches like a 5i, has nothing to do with tech. It's because it's built like a 5 iron.

The real tech here is that OEM's have found that combo length irons fit golfers with more moderate swing speeds.

I've had mine for two weeks now and I absolutely love them. I added the 52 and 56 and they are golden. I've had the G2,G5,G15,G25, and G410's. For me the 440's are the cream of the crop. Just got done shooting a 37 on the back 9 of a course where my best previous score was a 41. I'm keeping them.

I thought the G425's were the worst of the bunch. And then you have the lofts jacked up even more on the 430's.

At least with me ordering the retro lofts in the 440's I kind of held the line on the loft jacking. I was actually surprised I gain yardage with the 440's over my 410's which of course is a plus.

At 73 years old I thought about going retro but I have no issue getting the 5 iron elevated with the standard lofts.

This. I tried the G430's and while they were good I just couldn't adapt to the loft gapping issues. To each his own. At 76 maybe I'm just old. LOL

I am into almost 2 months of my 440's and I am loving them

I was playing the G400, so I figured I needed an upgrade

My hcp has gone from a 8 to a 6 so I am pleased with the performance

I was looking to upgrade for a few years and the 440 were the best of the bunch that I demoed

I hit the i530 and they were very good also but I wanted a little more forgiveness (not into practicing)

I play with 5 wedges

P,U, 52,56,60

Could care less as long as the ball goes where I need it to go

If it helps my game, I would play it

Except for that chipper thing

No way in hell is that ever going in my bag

(buys one next week)

The G440s are very good.  Ergo, nobody is trying to sell them.

Having owned all three:

The 425s had good left-right dispersion, but were short.

The 430s added distance, but worsened the left-right dispersion.

The 440s are the best of both, long and good left-right dispersion.

are the I530 as easy to hit?

went from i230 to i530 last year as I needed more forgiveness.

was so excited when the G440's launched.

picked up a set and reshafted with same shafts I have in my i530's and just couldn't get along with them. something about the wide sole and turf interaction just didn't work well for my swing. Don't have this issue with i530's.

IMO, I just think i530's are that good, very forgiving.

G440 irons brought me back to WRX for the first time in a year! They look really good from address and cavity looks much better than G430 IMO.

Tempted to finally upgrade from 718 AP1's (which are perfectly fine to be honest).
