Star Grip STX

I haven't seen much feedback on the new Star STX grip yet. Who has tried them out, and what are your thoughts? I saw it at the PGA show in January, but I have not actually swung a club with one yet. Plugged In Golf just posted a full review of it yesterday and it sounds like the performance and feel is pretty similar to a corded grip, but much longer lasting and tackier.  https://pluggedingolf.com/star-grip-stx-grips-review/

I have some, but I am not the target audience for this grip, which I think is geared more towards the full cord crowd. I find them to feel hard and somewhat plastic-y.  I wish Star would put their sidewinder pattern on their tour star less taper grip. Love the shape of the tour star, but just too slippery in the non-gloved thumb and trigger finger for me. They make great grips though, and I played sidewinders for years but prefer a reduced taper profile now as arthritis advances.

If you want to try something different, but great, try Yamato Grips.  The grip resembles the GP MCC, but doesn't tear up your hands, has better grip, stay's "grippy" in the rain, lasts longer, and is really inexpensive.   The downside is, when you buy them, you are sending your money to China.  If your CC has theft protection, it will get flagged until you approve the purchase.  They ship from Liverpool NY (just outside of Syracuse), and ship the same day you order.  I receive mine within 2 days of order.  Also, the mid size grip is absolutely huge.  If you play mid-size order standard and put 3 wraps under them.

I've had a Star STX midsize on my driver this year along with my old Pure DTX mids on the rest of the clubs.  I'll probably replace everything, eventually, with STXs.

 

I've had the Pures on for several years and they've held up amazingly well, so with Pure gone, Star is it for me.  The tread/texture is different between the two, and the STX feels a little softer.  If anything I like the Pure DTX slightly better (a little firmer with more grooves that break up the texture), but I always disliked that there's a lot of bare un-textured area on the first inch by the grip cap.  Star STX doesn't have this issue as seen in the pics below.  I also like the monochrome color of the STX.

 

 

 

 

 

I don't think the STX or the DTX feel like cord at all.  The texture is much more pronounced (peaks / valleys vs having a main surface), than a cord grip, even vs a Z Grip.  But they're all rubber, and to me they're not rough on the hands.  It's like a firm squishiness in technical terms 😄, but definitely not Winn, not cord, not Tour Velvet, just their own heavily textured rubber thing.

 

To me the traction of STX and DTX feel better and more secure than a cord grip, or any grip, when dry.  However when wet, I'd feel more secure with cord.  Never had an issue though just keeping the STX and DTX grips dry with a towel, and keeping them clean.  I haven't tried leather, but people say it's best for wet conditions.  I'd imagine though that leather might not feel tacky in cold winter weather until the hands warm it up (???).  STX and DTX feel great to me in any weather.

 

I have a Sidewinder midsize on my other driver, and it's a great tacky grip too as wrx'ers have reported.  However I prefer the tread / texture of STX and DTX.  It feels more secure to me.

 

Btw another grip with a heavy texture (different though and only comes in standard size) is the old Royal V Sand Wrap.  Golfworks had these for something like $24 for 12 grips, and I put them on some travel clubs.  I don't think they will last as crazy long as Star or Pure, but that might've been the best deal on grips ever.

I've had the STXs on a few clubs since last winter (got a batch of the prototypes).
(Been playing Stars for a couple decades, since they lanched - first Sidewinders, then Classic Wrap Midsize, now Tour Star Jumbos. Nobody makes a better grip, IMO.)

The STXs are very grippy, a little harder than the Tour Stars or Sidewinders, but not plasticky. Same exact rubber material as in all other Star grips - the harder feel comes from the elaborate texture. Very cool alternative to high-texture grips like cords. If they made Jumbos I'd be gaming them right now.

The sand wrap should last. They are made for GW by Star.

Live in Asia hot humid weather, wanted to try a non cord option in the summer 

 

it was very very hard to hold onto, zgrip cords still the way to go 

 

caveat is I don’t play with gloves so maybe it can work for those with gloves , winter I held onto the star grips fine as well.

A real compression of choices in the grip world seems to be happening.  Hmmm    I was about 80% Lamkin/20% Star Sidewinder.    I may have to venture into the Royal offerings.

I have a few of the recent Royal grips.  They're OK, but I admit I prefer the Star Sidewinder.

 

Trying the Star Classic Wrap on my driver, liking it a lot more than I thought I would.

Sidewinder is a very good grip that I believe may last a long time...
