Cobra One Length to "normal"

Recommended Posts

Hi All, so I had been looking for a 5 utility iron. I have a #3 & #4 Cobra utility, so figured to buy a #5 in the same model spec etc. Problem was, I ended up buying a 5 utility one length, as I was not as "focused"  (PSA don't drink and eBay!). My question is 2 fold I guess. 1st question, is can I put a new, standard length shaft into the one length 5, or will this end up screwing up the weight/lie angle yada yada. I like the look of the club, but not a fan of the 7 iron length 🙂 . 2nd question is more broad I guess, if I can use a standard shaft, can I use a standard hybrid shaft, without the cobra adapter? Just by epoxying in as would do with a normal iron. Or would it have to be a cobra adapter hybrid shaft. Thanks y'all

Biggest problem converting between standard length and one length heads is the head weight. Lie angle is not as much of a big deal and usually easy to adjust.  A one length 5 iron will be heavier than a standard 5 iron.  For the Cobra - which are designed for 7-iron length, that means it's probably about 14 gm heavier than a standard 5 iron or utility.   I can't say for sure but I would not expect it to be easy (if it's even possible) for the average person to get it down to the weight it needs to be for playing at normal 5i lengths.

Not sure I understand the second question. The Cobra Utility irons don't use an adapter, only the hybrids do.

But regardless if a head is designed to use an adapter, you need to use the correct adapter.  You can't glue a shaft in where an adapter is supposed to go.   You should be able to use a wide range of shafts in that adapter, but you still need the adapter.

thanks for the reply, yes the weight of the head was my biggest concern. I figured the shaft would be as you said, using an adapter version only. Back to the drawing board on the head 🙂

Like Stuart pointed out, its really a head wgt issue

If this is the actual club head?
https://www.cobragolf.com/en-eu/products/king-tec-one-length-utility-irons-2023?srsltid=AfmBOorz9T2tkH1FSLPpdXXmuaL5WIHm_G3w0kjD7Pj9ljNKTtLhwbXa

Then the question is, how large is the removable toe weight?
- if you are stuck with it, hosel drilling can most likely remove up to 10 grams, then ADD the weight of the toe weight....so those 14 grams down might be possible, at least close to.

It's unfortunately the older version utility. I am thinking of drilling out in some places, even as just an experiment. I am lumbered with it so worst comes to worst I drill it, mess it up, and get rid. Cannot use it anyway so pretty much a nothing ventured, nothing gained scenario 🙂

The photo tells me that BBGM is shorter than 1.25" who is typical for irons, meaning it will NOT be possible to remove as much as 10 grams like i wrote above.

The short hosel design is used when the designer intentionally try to keep VCOG as low as possible to improve launch from the same loft.

If the head is massive (not a hollow head design), both porting and sole grinding combined with hosel drilling might be needed to get to target wgt.

Tell me BBGM, and i can estimate how much hosel drilling can remove, and explain how we do that in this case. (Drill bit sizes and bore depth.)

It's not clear from that picture but it's a utility iron that uses an adapter - so I wouldn't recommend trying to remove ANY weight from the hossel.

My bad, i did not zoom it, so it looked like a conventional glued short hosel design.
