Roast Away!

Recommended Posts

Feel free to roast it. I play alright sometimes, capable of shooting either a 72 or a 92 any given day. Biggest struggle is staying away from the heel shot / cold shank. Anything obvious that could cause this?

Path is not normally this inside out, I’m thinking alignment in the bay might not have been great. I play a draw for the most part, but not a hook like this.

Earlier wrist hinge.

Eliminate excess head rotation

Those two things will help you solve the actual problem.  A backswing that is WAY too long for a 7 iron.  Too long for a driver in reality unless you’re competing in long drive.  Other issues will start to align when these are addressed.

Edit and addendum….Grip pressure looks too loose

To build on what @MonteScheinblum said:

image.png.70f7546f28b838956eecdebcf1160695.png

Right hand is opened up there, the longer backswing with the poor pivot leads to a shallow shoulder turn that requires you to drop down as you do from the top to get to the golf ball.

Lotta work ahead if you want to do it. But you have speed, and that's tough to teach, so you can get pretty good if you do put in the work.

Grip, setup, and then P1-P3 work is advised. Then add like 10% to get to what should be your actual P4.

Figured this would be on the hit list, the wrist hinge convo is hot lately it seems. Is wrist hinge with shoulder movement and passive hands/wrists, or hinge with active hands/wrists easier to achieve?

I follow until you get to the add 10% part. What do you mean by that?

As in:

  • Now: P3 + 40% = your P4
  • Future: Learn to swing to P3 only for a bit, then add only 10%. That's your new and improved P4.

Nothing can be passive if it’s not happening.  Tiger said it best.  Anyone who says the hands are passive doesn’t know how to swing a club properly……paraphrase.  It was more like anyone who says to take the hands and wrists out of it is stupid. 😜

George Knudson said this about hands, the key word being one of the more important words in golf, "let".

Passive hands is not meant to mean inactive hands. Our hands will be as active as we need them to be if we let them move along with the rest of our body.

Every golf swing you evaluate is an opportunity gained, every swing  you don't is an opportunity lost.     Knudson

And what do you tell someone whose hands don't do what they should? Odds are they're gonna have to actively "do" something with their hands for awhile.

This is like the "natural" stuff. Some people do things "naturally…" after years of learning to do them. Or after playing other sports and getting a general motion or movement pattern down. But that doesn't make the move "natural" - it's only natural to those that have learned to do it, plus a small minority to which it may actually be somewhat natural… but even they probably mimicked someone or something without really knowing about it.

This has been mentioned by others, but your first move "away" from the ball is the most efficient I have ever seen. This is a tongue in cheek comment referencing the the fact that tilting backwards gets you further from the ball (per inch of movement) than motion in any other plane.

You say Efficient, but I’m reading that as “stop doing it”. Is distance from the ball desirable or is this something I dreamed up to not shank every shot?

Note the 'tongue in cheek' comment (as in 'not intended to be taken seriously). And I don't know how you ended up with that move (that I have never seen before at that point in the swing). It could be some kind of subconscious move to avoid the shanks (or not).

IMHO, you could end up with a darn good golf game with a bit of work - way less work than many/many golfers would have to undertake.

Id like to get away from being a basket case with a s*** swing and transition to a basket case with a decent swing.

Best place to start? I’d like to try myself for a bit, I’ve had some lessons maybe 6-7 years ago, but enjoy learning how things work.

That be him, he was big on not interfering with the reactive downswing.  Crossing that threshold might not be the easiest thing for players of the game, but the threshold is real, do we react or go along for the ride.

“Swinging a golf club should be as natural as walking or throwing a ball.”

I was tired of that statement around 1986.

”Just let it happen….allow it to happen.”

Both of those statements only apply when you actually do things competently already.  People walk and throw like crap too, so I guess the first statement is correct.

How can you let or allow something happen that you don’t know how to do or have never done before?

Learning a new movement in the swing happens in 3 stages.

1.  You have to do it on purpose

2.  You have to allow your body to adapt the movement

3.  You do it without thinking and it becomes natural

If your advice is step 2 or step 3, you might as well put your teenagers in the car by themselves and say, “Put it in drive, press the gas and steer the car where you want it to go,” and go back in the house.

I have a 15 and 16 year old, so it’s relevant.

I walked like crap for 40 and I have to actively make several changes to the way I walked.

Just wasted 30 minutes reading his posts. He says “anatomy trains” more than once, which seems like a problem.

Just feel your swing like water coming out of a hose or a spoke in a wheel. You’ll be hitting it like Mike Austin in no time.
