Datagolf SG 2004-2013 (The Tiger Years)

I was able to find the SG numbers for the top players on Datagolf from 2004-2013 and I thought some of you stat junkies might appreciate it. You need a scratch membership to filter custom dates and it's kind of pricy but what the heck I was willing to get it for 1 month.

 

And if you want me to I can post different periods here as well. I checked TW's numbers through 2009 for example and at that point he was +3.28 with the next best being Phil at +2.01

What I really wanted to find were the figures from 1996-2013 and that data is available, but not on that page so you have to add it in yourself by looking up each individual player which is a real pain. As such this may be missing a player who excelled in 1996-2003.

 

Jim Furyk's high placement seems crazy, but it makes sense. He was 2nd in Mark Broadie's book which only covered 2004-2012.

How are you getting the 3.28? ... don't see it ... assuming it's a total of some kind, would think it's listed ...

That's the average through 2009 instead of 2013.

I can post a bunch of charts but it's easy to get lost if I do so.

 

 

no, no ... I'm not reading patiently and skipped that part ... got it ... 

 

Soly from NLU was using this website (I think) in their final Open LFKH show ... showed a chart of sg over age with SS's against many others, so looking at the chart as it progresses over time against others .. having the other NLU guys guess who it was ... it was a pretty entertaining bit ... there's Tiger, but then there's SS, at least in this short 4 year run, but he's ahead of everyone else at the same time, and approaches Tiger in some periods ... just a reminder that SS is, at this moment over 4 years, the best since Tiger ... by a decent margin, really ...

They're both so ridiculously good on approach shots. Scottie's also even better off the tee though I think if we had more of Tiger's early years it would be pretty close. 

 

And of course, that's comparing Tiger's decade plus streak to Scottie's 4 year run like you said. Not really fair to either player.

Eh, Tiger’s driving had streaky years, it was really only 1999, 2000, and 2002 that were great.
 

2000 especially because while total driving isn’t as advanced as strokes gained off the tee, the best Bubba could do while being #1 in distance was just inside top 100 in accuracy and he never got over 1.5 strokes gained.

 

Tiger was #2 in distance and almost top 50 in accuracy so he very well could’ve gained almost 2 strokes off the tee in 2000. 
 

Scottie’s driving is a close example of how good 1980-1984 Nicklaus would’ve performed off the tee today because they almost have the same swing aside from the footwork and follow-through.

Didn’t Tiger win a bunch in his day?  Do those numbers matter?

I guess it depends on what timeframe we're looking at. If we go 2004-2009 his average is +0.70 which is not far off Scottie 4-year average of +0.92. Add in Tiger's early years which everyone agrees were stronger and you can see it easily approaching the same number.

 

Even weaker years like 2001 or 2003 are going to be ahead of his 2004 numbers (+0.41) while the other years are probably all in the elite category of around +1 or better.

Yep, Tiger was pretty good. His strokes gained from 2004 - 2013 are free to anyone on the PGAT website.

Not a single player with negative strokes gained approach.  Clearly it’s the stat most correlated with low scores.
