Pre-1985 Vintage Clubs Questions…

Hi everyone,

 

This is a totally new space for me, as I normally play modern clubs, so please bear with me.

 

I am playing in an event that requires you to have clubs from before 1985, so I have some questions about what would qualify, as there isn’t a lot of good information out there and a lot of the clubs were released over years and years.

 

First off, I already own the driver shown below.  What is the proper name of this model?  Some places call it a Karsten and some call it a Ping Zing.  Regardless, what year was it released?  It has a JZ steel shaft in it.

Ping Zing is the model name and it was released in 1991.

Now how about this Cleveland RC69? Release date?

Based on this description from the Maltby guide "... Mahogany finish. Stamps: Tip of sole - Oil over Hardened over RC69. Soleplate - Cleveland over Classic over USA" I'd say your driver was released in either 1985 or 1986.

Maltby has a guide, huh? I should have known!

 

Interesting it says 85 or 86, I have only seen 84 so far in my research.

The Ping Zing is a real bomber , but as noted is early 90s.

There are 4 editions, they all begin 1950 & only include the professional line of clubs. The 4th edition goes from 1950 thru 1998. Maltby stopped after that, I guess cuz so many mergers, new companies etc made it difficult to put into one guide.

If the clubs you have don't meet the pre 1985 criteria, check out your local Goodwill. They frequently have old e5oods there.
