Nick Faldo's Equipment

It just says 'Forged' as per the standard Nike wedges.

I'm in two minds as to whether to clean it up or not. The back of the blade appears to be chrome under the rust but it's rusted so evenly across the club I quite like the look. Anyone know if Nick's Nike wedges were all chrome and shiny when he played them?

I was talking to him earlier in the year before he was taken on-board with TM. He thought the MP-60's he had were the best irons he's ever played, he was looking at some of the old blades he used in the late 80's early 90's and couldn't believe how small the heads were.

One of the only times he was never sponsored or paid by a manufacturer he chose the following clubs...

Driver: Taylormade R5 TP

Irons: Mizuno MP60

Wedges: Ping MB and Mizuno MP

3 wood and Putter chopped and changed, but he said the best putter he had was the TPA XVIII

Faldo is the reason I love golf, my sporting idol, I'm lucky I get to work with him a few times a year. Many like him, many hate him, but one thing you can't deny is he was the best player in the world for 5 years. 6 majors, the best Ryder Cup record of any player on either side and had the abilty to hit the right shot when it counted. I bet 80% of the tour pro's now days couldn't hit the shots he hit with those clubs (persimmon drivers, tiny butter knife long irons)

Hate him? He is one of the best commentators out there and I love his English sense of humor.

Both my parents were English and I have the same dry sense of humor not every North American can understand.

I get a lot of "whats wrong with you" looks.

What grind did he do to the irons?

Just a tweak or did he grind a lot?

Even layer of rust = patina. I'd keep it. I don't like it when my wedges get a thick patch of rust in one or two spots, but light patina-type rust I am fine with.

Faldo has 27 gold ping putters in the vault. I have the two Open Championships, anybody know what putters he used in the other wins and the tournaments he won with Ping Putters?

He won the 87 Open with a Pal 4 beryllium putter I think, and a B60 for the 92 Open.

90 Open was the Taylor Made TPA, as was the Masters that year. 89 Masters was the Bullseye then the TPA for the final round. He used an Odyssey Rossie II for the 96 Masters.

Think he also used a Ping Anser in 88 & a Ping Pal in 83 both bronze models, but I'm not sure if he won with these, but I'd guess he did with that many gold Pings.

I think when he was using the TaylorMade TPA he putted the best, he also used this for the 90 Masters win..

TaylorMade M2 19°

So, I'm fairly confident in saying I'm now in possession of one of Sir Faldo's former weapons. Thought a few might be interested..... It's a Nike wedge that appears to be from the period Faldo was with them though it looks nothing like the retail Nike wedges of the time (I own a few of them) but it looks suspiciously similar to the Faldo Mizuno wedges in terms of head shape, offset and grind. The N.F. stamped on the blade was a slight clue too. As you'd expect from a Faldo club it's also 1 inch long, slightly upright and fitted with a midsize Lamkin crossline half cord grip. All this for the slight sum of £17.50 inc postage, bargain!

Nice, I saw a 53° one of these for sale a little while ago, looked the same as this, same grip & NF stamp, it went for around £15, I was going to bid, but didn't..

I understand that this is a thread from years ago but I am curious to hear from some fellow Sir Nick fans. How would you describe Sir Nick's ball flight circa 1984, circa 1990, circa 1996 and even today? I get that the trajectory is on the flatter side and Sir Nick talks of hitting nothing but fades but I want a different perspective. Thanks!!!

Great thread, I love all of the insight into these older clubs and WITBs.

Does anyone have any insight on the attached set? Supposedly made for Faldo. I asked about hosel markings, but the seller is not responding to questions about them.

Thanks in advance.

First time I saw him in person was 1998 and saw him a few times after that up until 2004.

I was surprised how low his trajectory was on his driver.   This was before Trackman but guessing he hit it around 70ft max in the air.  I am guessing he has a -2 attack angle.

His iron play on the days I saw him post 1998 was mediocre tbh.   He was way down the field.

He was arrow straight with the driver though.

Okay, so I'm probably too late, but I have seen a set stamped like that come up for auction in Japan. In fact, I think they sold some time late last year, as that was when I could no longer find the listing.

The seller had a story that they were made for a pro (no name given) who played them in a tournament in Singapore, then sold them afterwards to get some money for the flight home.

There was also a 2i with the same stamping that the seller was offering separately. I was quite tempted by the 2i, but the price was a little high for me.

I am pretty sure the clubs in your picture are custom TP5 irons. TP5s were released some time in the mid Eighties, but are hard to find. They were also sold in America as MS5s, which are different from the MS5s offered in the Japanese market.

I have a US-market set, stamped MP5, which means they are 1990 or later, so probably a special order, and I really like them. The single iron head shots are of the 7i.
