Hands Not Leading

So basically over the past couple of weeks i've lost a ton of distance with all my irons. I went for a lesson yesterday and it was obvious what the problem was. My hands were way behind at impact and i was increasing the loft ridiculously which is why my 5 iron is going my 8 iron distance. We did some drills but nothing really seemed to work or click. I went to the range today and no matter how hard i tried i couldnt get my hands to lead the clubhead. Anyone have tips on how to get the hands leading the clubhead at impact? I'm starting to lose it and im getting really frustrated to the point where im ready to throw in the towel for a while.

Get an impact bag and hit it about 1000 times

I've never been a big fan of training aids but the impact bag is the best thing I've seen for keeping the hands ahead of the ball at impact.

 

As SHERO said, hit as many shots as you can and you'll soon stop yourself from 'flipping' at the ball.

Using an impact bag will absolutely show you what impact should feel like and encourage you not to scoop, but more times than not you are doing something else in your swing that will not allow you get your hands to lead and be in front at impact. What that is, well, unfortunately it could be several things. But, sometimes you can be in such positions that the only way you can make contact is to throw the club at the ball. Maybe, try to really figure out if anything would cause you to have to throw the club down at the ball. This is tough. Also, you can rehearse impact, with the hands slightly forward in front of a mirror and really be conscious about what this feels like and then maybe try to remember what you looked like on film. Then compare the differences and feels.

Simplest method we use to teach compression is placing an impact board (used for clubfitting) 4 inches behind the ball. Impossible to get the hands stuck behind the clubhead and get the ball airborne.

 

I have to add that this will not always address the cause of the problem and you might in fact create an unnecessary move to achieve compression.

Quit stopping your pivot. If your pivot continues thru the shot you won't throw the clubhead at the ball, past your hands. This is the true meaning of lag, not the acute angle between the left arm and clubshaft.

You CAN'T lead with the handle IF your stuck on your right side as the PIVOT has to slow down to allow/force the clubhead to square up.....given a fundamentally sound backswing, you MUST be "on your left side"/"into your left pivot point" so that the core can continue to UNwind/rotate to "hold your leverage"/"maintain the angles" (normally caused by a weak/poor grip and/or POOR "angles" at SET UP/poor weight distribution or both).....and/or the clubhead is attacking from too far behind the body/arms-hands and/or the clubface is in too "weak/open" a position relative to YOUR "angles"........in other words you'll NEVER be able to lead with the handle ahead of the clubhead IF the clubhead wouldn't square up if ya' did.......your forced to get "cuppy/flippy" or the face wouldn't square up.......IF I'm right you could stand out there till the proverbial cows come home and NEVER fix the cast/throw/flip as youi'll NEVER hit a solid/straight shot if you did........ :man_in_love:

A quick drill you could try is to tee up a ball as if you were hitting a 3wd. Take an iron and try to hit the ball off of the tee and take a divit in front of the tee. If you flip you will go under the ball or not take a divit at all. Hope it helps.
