Do you listen to music while you practice?

I am doing a research paper on music in the workplace and I thought that this relates well.

My answer was "yes it passes the time" but i only actually listen to music for putting and not because it helps to focus or anything, i just find it nice listening to music while putting.

I have listened to music while practicing since high school and all through college. It took a while to get used to. It really does help me focus in a weird sort of way. I don't think as much. When I have the music to listen to I find that I just do my normal routine. For example, when I'm putting. I just putt. I still do my pre-shot routine and all my drills, but it keeps me from over thinking. The extra concentration I put into the music keeps my mind off the bad stuff.

I figured out early on that if you have to keep stopping to switch songs and stuff that it can break my concentration. So, I worked on getting some really good playlists together to prevent that. I also will run my headphones under my shirt or I use an armband.

Bingo! I've found that the music helps to drown out distracting noises on the range and the course and it helps to empty my mind and not think as I'm swinging. After I'm done hitting the ball, the ear phones come out and off to hit my next shot.

Just a few tips-

 

I've found it's best to run the headphone cord up (or down) your back and plug your ear buds in from behind your neck. This ensures the cord isn't in the way when you're swinging. And I usually just lock my ipod and keep it in my left pocket.

My dad set up a playlist on his phone, so when he's helping me practice the songs help keep my tempo set. Things like "The Blue Danube" or "Here Comes the Sun" tend to keep my rhythm on track.

I have been doing it during my practice sessions for the past couple of months. I feel like listening to music puts me into my own little world and blocks out many distractions. I think it has improved my practice sessions because my handicap has gone from 3.4 to 1.1 during that time frame. I started doing it after noticing the two time defending club champion listening to music on the putting green. I also listen to music when I walk the course alone in the early mornings.

It certainly helps at the range, too many people who can't shut up and it's always great when they bring their kids.

Why would one need to listen to music during practicing at the range? I mean, while playing an actual round, are u gonna have your mp3 player in your ears? How can having music playing thru your ears in practice simulate an actual round of golf? I'm just wondering for those who say it helps them concentrate/focus better...

actual golf and practice are one in there own. When you are on the golf course, in particular in tournament play, you dont have to deal with distractions that may come up at the practice facilities. Noise is a very common distraction but more so for me, I know a lot of people that play very often at my course and if they see me with my head phones in they don't bug me unless its important, less people chatting me up.

I always find myself hitting the ball with barely any effort while listening to music. It's nice when you want to play a round but don't have anyone to talk to for 18 holes.

I do listen when I am playing and I have listened once or twice in a tournament. I find, as stated above, that I do not have to deal with the distractions that come with a busy practice facility when playing in matches or tournaments. I always carry my ipod with me and occasionally I will pop the ear buds in and zone out in between holes or shots. It depends on when and where I am playing though and also my mood and if I need to focus a little more or just zone out. However, I don't keep them in all the time if I am with a group. I don't want to be rude. It was an issue in high school. I found that my college competitors were more understanding though.

Once you try it you will never want to practice with out listening to music. I put it helps me pass the time will being completely focus for the entire practice session.

Have my ipod with me every day, listen to it warming up for tourneys, while practicing, while playing alone, im pretty much listening to music all day

not to get off topic on this subject again but why are some people so abrasive in the forums now days.

 

your post was completely out of line and off topic, you do not know his time constraints and situation. WRX is an AMAZING place to talk and discuss golf with a bunch of great people. I personally dont want that to change. They (the mods) do a great job with very little censorship but if this keeps up they will have to make changes....changes that are not nessisary. PLEASE for the sake of WRX and all of the members, if you dont have anything nice or constructive to say DON"T say it.

You guys have sparked my interest. I have never tried this but it sounds like a pretty good idea, especially when short game practice becomes a little tedious. I'll repost my findings later if this thread is still around. Thanks for the idea!

Sorry but if you can't hit 200 balls a week without listening to music, you must not like golf very much.

i listen to my ipod most every practice session. it is amazing how relaxed and focused it allows me to be. it drowns out everything and really allows me to swing the club. i've had some of my best practice sessions in the past few weeks with the ipod on. yesterday as an example, i practiced on the range for a couple of hours and didn't even realize the people around me. tee times were coming and going and i had no idea. THAT IS HEAVEN! i keep everything the same...drills, pre-shot routine...everything....only difference is music. i keep my volume pretty high...but not so others can hear it, at least i don't think they can...LOL. i use the ipod in all facets of practice....putting and chipping included.

 

 

i use my ipod unless i am expecting some phone calls, then i use my iphone. i switched out the radio headset from iphone with a sweet bang & olufson radio headset. it has the same set-up but with over the ear buds. a little pricey but miles better than the iphone set. i also run the cord down the back of my shirt and into my back pocket.

 

 

i'll never practice again without music.

The tempo of a waltz is probably right. You could listen to the Blue Danube by Johann Strauss as seen in the movie 2001. It worked very well in the movie.

 

I was thinking if I listened to swing music that I might be in the right era to swing like Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. ;)

 

I know computer programmers who work with iPods but I usually find music distracting when doing office work.
