Why the disdain for iron covers? (Merged Iron Cover Topics)

Recommended Posts

Lately Ive been considering getting iron covers and Ive read a few old threads on here about that subject and its clear that most people dont use iron covers and dont see a need to.

I guess what I dont understand is why you would put a headcover on a $300-$500 driver, a $200 fairway wood, a $200 hybrid and a $100-$300 putter, but you dont see the need for headcovers for your $700-$1,000 set of irons.

Maybe I just dont get it, but to me it seems kinda silly to have headcovers for all your other clubs but not have them for your irons.

Explain.

... Why disdain??. The same reason you made fun of pen/pencil pocket protectors for shirt pockets in High School.

... You use a headcover on your driver/fairway woods/hybrids because you want to protect the shaft and the paint. Irons are made of stainless steel and chrome and they come into contact with hard ground, rocks, roots etc. There are better ways to protect your irons if you are worried about resale, or if you just like them to look new. I use a Bag Boy Revolver bag to protect the graphite shafts on my irons, but they also protect the heads. And finally, if you are geeky enough to consider iron head covers, you should be geeky enough to not care what the cool kids think. : )

Dont you also hit hard ground, rocks, roots, etc with your driver or faiway wood? I guess I dont see the difference.

Oh and about caring what the, "cool kids" think, I dont. I just want to understand why people feel this way.

What about forged irons? They are softer than cast irons and youd think you would want to protect them from nicks caused by your irons rattling against each other.

If you don't care about how you or your clubs look, then you definitely don't need iron covers. The tiny, minute nicks you get from just bag chatter won't affect how the clubs perform. It's only a visual thing, so save the money and don't get them. Headcovers save graphite shafts, not iron heads. They will prevent bag chatter, but not performance, nor the marks from simply using the club.

If you don't care about how you look and are convinced they are a good thing, then just buy 'em. No need to make a thread over it.

I use iron head covers on any forged irons I own. I use them to travel to and from the course, and if I have to move the clubs around. I don't use them on the course because dealing with the cover breaks my concentration.

I don't give a rip what someone else thinks about the covers. When they start buying my equipment, then they can talk about the covers.

Don't let them fool you - you use head covers on woods for the same reason you do on irons - to protect the head. It doesn't matter to me if it is paint or steel - I want to keep it looking good.

To answer your actual question, people have disdain for iron head covers because it makes them feel more superior. In other words, they have self confidence issues. Just like people who made fun of you in high school. Most of us have grown out of that, but unfortunately, some are stuck in 10th grade.

... OK, you asked a question and I gave you an honest answer, that you ignored. No you don't hit hard ground, rocks, roots, etc with your driver, because it is on a tee... sigh. I stated they are painted and that is what you are protecting against the paint chipping. But you don't see a difference? Clearly you have an agenda...

I use iron covers... I use a cover on every club in my bag. It's clear that someone here has an agenda.. and it's not the OP....

... The OP asked why the disdain? Most folks I know and play with think iron headcovers are dorky beyond description, including me. Napoleon Dynamite uses iron headcovers!!! But who cares? Really. Life is too short to care what others think of something that makes sense to you. I certainly know enough folks that think golf is for sissies. While I know better, I have never tried to change their mind, because we are both right. That is what they "think" and I just "think" differently. But I would happily play golf with anyone using iron head covers as long as they kept up pace, and those that I have played with have done just that. Now the white tape on their bridge of their glasses, gettin a peanut butter sandwich outta their Batman lunchbox and hiding behind a tree whenever a babe cruised by in her beverage cart has caused them to slow down, but not their iron head covers. : )

... So the moral is, don't ask a question unless you want to hear the answer.

I guess you should have your answer by now: go ahead and use iron covers, since theres pretty much no good reason why people hate them....other than "all of my friends hate them, so I hate them too". "They look geeky. All the cool kids don't use iron covers." Headonastick's answer sounds like he pretty much nailed it....

I don't get the slow play thing--didn't slow me down...couple of seconds at the most? Unless you got those iron covers that have the chains and combination lock that you have to undo just to take them off.

I used iron covers once, when I was trying to find a set that fit my game. Found that the covers made the clubs look a lot better on those closeup macro shots when putting it on eBay. I finally settled on a set, so the covers are somewhere in the garage. In fact, pay for the shipping and the envelope and I'll ship 'em to you!

To be honest, this forum is the only place where anyone has anything to say about iron covers. I've always used iron covers, and only one guy has given me a hard time about it. (Old HS friend of my brother and I.)

Anyways, apparently my brother and him made a bet prior to my coming back to the States about me beating him on the course. I suppose he thought he had it in the bag due to the iron cover issue, and the fact my brother sucks. Thus we being related I must suck too. I'm telling you, that steak was cooked perfect. I miss USDA grade A choice beef. Nothing like it in the world. Even had a few Pale Ales to wash it down. Sweetest eight beers I have ever had. For desert I had this really rich chocolate fudge cake. Oh, just so you know, the crab legs I ordered for an appetizer were so good I ordered another pound to go with the steak. The lobster tails were slightly over cooked, but nothing a good dose of butter couldn't handle.

First off I think Headcovers for woods are a carry over for when we played wood clubs and they were so easily damaged.

Gary Adams the founder of Taylor Made told me when he first started the company his metal woods would do away with headcovers and make wood clubs obsolete. He got one of his predictions right.

As far as putter covers I have lost everyone I have ever owned , except my Pizza box I keep my Spider in. After todays putting round it may be keeping the putter warm in the trunk for a while.

My distain for iron covers comes from personal issues. As and assisstant professional in Wisconsin we had a huge bag room.

When the bag boys were not there (school) guess who had to clean some clubs, besides I did it to keep from being bored some in the spring and fall.

It is not fun cleaning clubs when you have to remove all those iron covers (back then they were plastic snap ons)

Plus you always had members coming in accusing you of loosing their cover. Distain thats the nicest word I can think of.

I had never used iron covers before because i allways thought they were more trouble than their worth but i recently purchased new forged irons and i wanted to keep them from getting beat up while in the bag so i gave them a try and im glad i have done so , it keeps them from clanging around and they defineatly dont get knicked up as much

Don't worry, I wouldn't ask you to clean my clubs. I wouldn't ask anyone to clean my clubs. No offense to anyone, including yourself specifically, NO ONE IS TOUCHING MY CLUBS. They're mine. They're my tools and I will clean them. I will not leave my clubs in a locker. I will not leave my clubs in the trunk. I will not leave my clubs in the garage with no climate control. My clubs are tools of precision and accuracy. They are mine, and it is up to me to get to know my clubs through use and maintenance in order to better our working relationship in this great game called golf.

It's balance. you can be prissy about your woods, but you have to show some manhood too. The irons with nicks and dents are manly. It's like mother telling you to "put on your sweater Johnny--you'll catch a cold."

Golf has to have some football in it. Dirty, dented scratched irons are the manly wounds and external scars we bear from playing the game...

Also it shows an anal attitude...its a red flag for being imbalanced--doesn't mean you are--it just makes you think about the guy.

They are dorky looking IMPO . Guys with iron covers also carry their golf shoes in shoe boxes to the course . I change my shoes in the car.

When i play golf , less hastles the better. I get annoyed taking the covers of my woods during the round . Imagine the irons..

Does any one on the tour use iron covers , unlike the glove in the left hand.

I personally have no problem with anyone using iron headcovers.

My buddy Steve uses iron covers and of course he has to towel the club and clean the grooves before putting the cover one. He waits until it is his turn to putt before lining up his putt from all four directions. He also takes a minimum of 7-10 practice swings after he tees his ball up and 5-6 from the fairway. Rounds with Steve last a minimum of 6 hours, often times 8 hours. Get my drift...
