Why the disdain for iron covers? (Merged Iron Cover Topics)

Recommended Posts

I am not prissy with any of them My clubs live in my trunk and I actually clean them once twice a year. (mainly to clean the grips)

I am not particular or prissy about much , when I was a kid I accidentally spike a friends Penna driver he had just got refinished

I told him I was sorry and would pay to have it redone. Now we were about 17 and he suddenly just teared up and cried.

Funniest thing I ever saw I mean its a golf club. I handed him twenty bucks and walked away trying not to laugh.

Does any one on the tour use iron covers , unlike the glove in the left hand.

Unfortunately I am forced to buy my own clubs, I have tried getting a deal with Bridgestone, Callaway, Mizuno and Nike. :clapping: They have all turned me down, so I am taking the best care of my equipment that I can. This is all personal preference, and yes I have iron covers on my J33 Combos. You can tell a lot about a man by how he treats his own possessions and those of others. If you think it is macho to have irons that look like they were used by our troops in the desert of Iraq then so be it. You can peel the cover off of your $50 a dozen Pro V1s every time you hit the ball. I have had my forged irons for a year and a half and because they look decent I may get forty or fifty more dollars for them when I sell them because they don’t look like hell.

That said I wouldn’t bother to cover a cast set. But I would not hold anything against someone that did.

I've read these posts a few time and never responded. I guess now I'll put my 2 cents in. I use iron covers and have never had a conversation about it. I play a form forged club and I really hate dings. WIth the iron covers, I have no dings. I've never had the issue of slow play. I actually play faster than most folks I play with. I used to caddy and I didn't care for keeping up with iron covers of players. So, I get the cleaning/bag room deal. But, on that note, get another job. If cleaning clubs is a part of your job, then you will deal with some iron covers. The post on here about golf club employees and golf store employees complaining about members and customers crack me up. Dude, that's part of your job. I'm an educator and if I complained about kids the way they complained about their customers, I'd go sale insurance or something. Just get another job. But, I'll tell you what, if anyone here buys me a set of forged irons and tells me not to put covers on them, I'll do it. Until then, stay out of my bag and keep collecting your limited edition putter covers.

... OK, you asked a question and I gave you an honest answer, that you ignored. No you don't hit hard ground, rocks, roots, etc with your driver, because it is on a tee... sigh. I stated they are painted and that is what you are protecting against the paint chipping. But you don't see a difference? Clearly you have an agenda...

No agenda, just trying to get some honest answers. You never hit your driver from the fairway?

if irons were supposed to be used with covers

then you would get iron covers when you bought irons

when you buy a driver, you get a headcover

when you buy a hybrid, you get a headcover

when you buy a FW, you get a headcover

anything involving headcovers that did not come with the clubs when purchased is inherently dorky

I do not use iron headcovers, but I understand everybody who uses them to protect forged irons.

Anyway, I do admit, that most iron headcovers you can buy, don't really look too good. Personally, I use 10 old black socks :clapping: , that I put on my irons for transport. They come off, when I start to play. But I do use a bag with a"click" system, so the clubs cannot move around in the bag (I always walk, mind you).

I see a gap. There definitely is a gap.

Head Covers with clubs are more about marketing than protecting them. Just because something does not or does come with something has nothing to do with you needing it. I think people forget or never know that everything we do or consider "normal" was starting by a person or people. That being said, someone or some company had the bright idea of using headcovers on their woods. ANd ther you have it. Drivers don't fall from the sky with headcovers on them. Heck, you need insurance to register a car. But, they don't come together.

They are dorky looking IMPO . Guys with iron covers also carry their golf shoes in shoe boxes to the course . I change my shoes in the car.

When i play golf , less hastles the better. I get annoyed taking the covers of my woods during the round . Imagine the irons..

I personally have no problem with anyone using iron headcovers.

My buddy Steve uses iron covers and of course he has to towel the club and clean the grooves before putting the cover one. He waits until it is his turn to putt before lining up his putt from all four directions. He also takes a minimum of 7-10 practice swings after he tees his ball up and 5-6 from the fairway. Rounds with Steve last a minimum of 6 hours, often times 8 hours. Get my drift...

Yeah, your friend Steve is a doofus. You're a doofus to keep playing with Steve.

What does that have to do with iron covers?

Umm, the shop threw in my head covers for free. A long with 30% discount on a new bag, free tees, free hat, free glove of my choice, free two dozen balls of my choice, and 10% off on some new shoes.

I'm really starting to hate these iron cover posts. They become so extreme, so polarizing, so... you know you wouldn't say these things to someone's face if you saw them on the golf course.

In fact, I'm pretty sure there's a lot of things others think are dorky other people do. I'm me. If I cared what other people think I wouldn't be where I am today. Trust me, no one ever comes up and tells me I'm dorky.

I use iron covers. I'm proud I use iron covers. I even have cast irons. I still use iron covers. I've used iron covers since I first took up the game with forged blades. I think I have the coolest iron covers ever. (New Castle clear plastic ones.) Yes, I clean my clubs immediately after ever shot as I walk up to my ball for the next shot. Yes, I hit my clubs a lot. Yes, they still look brand new. No, I will never sell them. No, no one has accused me of slow play. Yes, others have asked me to slow down. Yes, if I was a tour pro I would still use iron covers. Yes, I take my clubs to the shower with me after a round so I can wash them as well. Yes, I'm pretty sure most folks would think I'm crazy for doing this. Yes, I think it makes sense and cuts down on club maintenance time. Yes, I learned tricks like this in the Army. (Wash your gear as you wash yourself. Maintained gear will maintain you when you need it most.) If folks think that's anal retentive, you should see my computers, electronic testing tools, and my tools and possessions in general.

nope, and they didn't give me balls, tees, green fees, shoes or any of that stuff either

the point I was going for, was that making a special effort, and spending extra money for headcovers is nerdy in my opinion. If my opinion is that some people on this thread are nerds, I hope they're not too offended, it's just an opinion, and you know, like an armpit or more colorful part of the body that also starts with A, we all have one.

It is a free country. Use them if you like them.

Personally, I think irons are a tool. A tool that is slammed into the ground at a high rate of speed. They are gonna get nicked up. Especially, if you play a lot of golf. A guess to a club ho it may be worth it since they are trying to preserve the value. When is the last time you saw a carpenter with a cover on his hammer?

i use covers for my MX-23s. I just don't understand people who say that drivers / fairways etc need covers - when irons/wedges don't.

Surely a few paint chips on your driver, or a bit of bag rub on the shaft won't make a blind bit of difference to the way it plays?? If you spend $400 on a chikara or scratch wedge - why wouldn't you want to protect that too??

anyhow - each to their own, and less of the "all iron cover users are dorks crap" please.

A carpenter takes care of his tools. At least a quality carpenter.

I take care of my tools. My computer is covered, my care is well maintained and cleaned, my wrenches, sockets and drivers are always wiped down after a job and I see a urologist once a year.

I see tools as important to completing a job so I treat them well. Why don't you take care of your tools?

take a look at how thick the metal on your iron heads is vs how thick the metal on the crown of your driver is

often drivers are 1mm or less think in some spots, and would be very likely to sustain damage if hit on the right spot

irons are solid metal

Each to their own and if you feel the need to cover them up, crack on.

Personally, I can't stand the way they look and I don't use them. I actually like my clubs to get a nice 'weathered' look and a bit of bag chatter is fine by me and adds to the character. I'm no fan of big, unsightly rock dings - but an iron cover won't stop those anyway.

I've never bought a set of irons in my life and given a moment's thought to resale value. I buy them to hit balls with and not to keep in pristine condition. If they work, they'll get used until I find something better or wear them out.

I don't see the reasoning behind protecting a wedge at all. It'll suffer less wear and damage clacking against another short iron as it's carried in the bag than it will being thumped into abrasive sand on a regular basis, surely?

I dont think its about paying for the irons, i think the guys on tour dont use them because they only care how the club performs. I in no way believe they think oh well if these get a knock i can just go get another set 'cause these guys really settle into a set and sometimes notice the difference between 'identical' clubs. People that use iron covers often care about the look of their irons more than the performance. I can't count the times ive seen a hacker roll up with a shiny new set of blades just so they can show them to their mates and watch people glance at them as they walk by outside the clubhouse and then wack the headcovers on to keep them shiny while theyre hacking around the course. I personally care about the performance of my irons 98% and the looks 2%. Thats why mine have lead tape all over them. It doesn't look pretty but i play better with them.

I don't have active distain for people who use iron covers, I just chalk it up to people are different. If I am honest with my self, I do "stereotype" people who use iron covers as, meticulous, OCD, Slow players (people who think 4 hours and 20 minute is fast enough). The are also the type more likely to buy "fabric protectant" extended warrantees and other "protective gimmicks". I would say it is uncommon to see a low handicapper who uses iron covers, but there are plenty of terrible golfers who don't use iron covers either. In the scheme of things it seems the iron head-cover type spends too much time worrying about material possessions and preserving them. Of course this is time taken away from worrying about other matters of a non materialistic nature. Iron Head-cover users are just as friendly as normal people, and I would never insult one that I did not know well, because it could hurt their feelings. And my stereo type also assumes they have neater handwriting then normal people. Now that I a written all of this out, I realize I am a lot more judgmental then I thought!

Again, why then do we have covers for out drivers and fairway woods but not for our irons.

You slam your driver and fairway wood into the ground at just as high a rate of speed (even higher if its a driver), so why then is a driver or fairway wood considered to be so precious that it needs a cover, but irons arent worthy of a cover?

Is a driver/fairway wood any less of a, "tool" than an iron?

Maybe I just dont get it, but to me it seems like a double-standard.

I use iron covers on forged sets, I hate that bag chatter look. I also will not hit a nice forged iron from a lie where I know there is a strong possibility that I'm going to deeply scratch or dent a forged club, that's what a hack iron is for.

They certainly do not slow down play, guys that insist on having 20 practise swings slow play down and imo tour pros don't use iron covers because they don't pay for 'em!
