Why the disdain for iron covers? (Merged Iron Cover Topics)

Recommended Posts

I use them to store my minty rare 2 iron heads that I dont use in a drawer. I also sometimes use them for shipping when I sell something nice on ebay, but I never ever play with them.

I use iron covers on forged sets, I hate that bag chatter look. I also will not hit a nice forged iron from a lie where I know there is a strong possibility that I'm going to deeply scratch or dent a forged club, that's what a hack iron is for.

They certainly do not slow down play, guys that insist on having 20 practise swings slow play down and imo tour pros don't use iron covers because they don't pay for 'em!

Yup, that's the thing I don't get, is these people who will spend $800 on a set of TP forged or what have you, then let them hammer against each other and look 10 years old within a season...WTF is up with that?

The bag chatter look is like driving around a Porsche with hail damage. Covers not only keep clubs looking better, it's also a lot quieter riding around with them.

I wonder why people use headcovers on their drivers?

A lot of time and energy is spent on this topic, which cycles through every so often. I don't understand why golfers who use covers need the validation of others, or whey they give a rats _ss what others think. I also don't understand why golfers who don't use covers get so personal when referring to people who do (peculiar, OCD, anal retentive), and whey they even care about others using covers.

Who cares, one way or another???

Using iron covers is like driving around with a cover on your Porsche.

No....hitting your approach shot with the headcover on your iron is like driving around with a car cover. When you're ready to use the club, you take the cover off, much like when you're ready to use your car, you take the cover off.

But good analogy though, because this just shows how everything is relative. Why do people use car covers anyway??? What's the purpose of a car??? To me, it's just to get me from point A to point B. But still, you have a good amount of people who almost religiously put a cover on their car. Why? It's because they want to keep their car and it's paint looking good. Same thing with irons, no?

I don't use a car cover.....don't use iron covers, either. But I don't have a problem with anyone who uses a car cover, an iron cover, a computer cover, a cover for their gas grill, or even those people who keep that plastic on their couch.

First off I think Headcovers for woods are a carry over for when we played wood clubs and they were so easily damaged.

Gary Adams the founder of Taylor Made told me when he first started the company his metal woods would do away with headcovers and make wood clubs obsolete. He got one of his predictions right.

As far as putter covers I have lost everyone I have ever owned , except my Pizza box I keep my Spider in. After todays putting round it may be keeping the putter warm in the trunk for a while.

My distain for iron covers comes from personal issues. As and assisstant professional in Wisconsin we had a huge bag room.

When the bag boys were not there (school) guess who had to clean some clubs, besides I did it to keep from being bored some in the spring and fall.

It is not fun cleaning clubs when you have to remove all those iron covers (back then they were plastic snap ons)

Plus you always had members coming in accusing you of loosing their cover. Distain thats the nicest word I can think of.

Don't worry, I wouldn't ask you to clean my clubs. I wouldn't ask anyone to clean my clubs. No offense to anyone, including yourself specifically, NO ONE IS TOUCHING MY CLUBS. They're mine. They're my tools and I will clean them. I will not leave my clubs in a locker. I will not leave my clubs in the trunk. I will not leave my clubs in the garage with no climate control. My clubs are tools of precision and accuracy. They are mine, and it is up to me to get to know my clubs through use and maintenance in order to better our working relationship in this great game called golf.

I swear to God when I read your post I was picturing the fat guy in Full Metal Jacket talking to his rifle. I could care less that you or anyone else chooses to use iron covers, and frankly I'm sick of these threads too, but you have got to explain why you shower with your irons after a round. That's just hilarious.

I think it all comes down to personality of each individual. I use headcovers on my forged irons because I want to protect them from bag chatter and scratches while I'm walking on the course. Someone above mentioned that people ("hackers") use headcovers on forged blades so that that can show off to their friends and in reality cannot hit them to justify carrying set of blades in the bag.

It's these generalizations and narrow minded thoughts that irks me more than anything. Part of being a mature adult is accepting that others are different. But then again, I guess some folks never got to that point in their life YET! :clapping:

Hey, my greatgrandmother had plastic on her couch...(LOL, she really did) and when those covers came off it was like new. I've used sheepskin seatcovers in my cars since about 1990. When they come off to get cleaned, it's amazing to see how the leather is showroom niew....

I don't care if people like them or not either, as long as they can get their arse around a course in 3 1/2 hours, they could have a Al Czervik bag and putter...I just spend a lot of money on clubs (all forged except for FTs) so I figure why not take care of them? Now wedges...that's different, though if they match the irons, I guess maybe.

The gent who said about not letting anyone else clean their clubs, I don't unless it's client golf mainly for reason that the people usually do a pretty mediocre job. I've tipped these kids $5-10 bucks and they still do a cr@ppy job. I figure cleaning them myself is part of coming home and taking clubs out of trunk (mine are never in trunk longer than to and from a round).

About 10 years ago I bought iron covers from one of the major golf catalogs, probably Edwin Watts or Golfsmith. They were a type I'd never seen before, mini long necked black iron covers, not the neoprene clip on stuff. I don't like anything about the neoprene type.

They were called Fur-Knit Iron Covers, by a company called Tartan. Luckily I knew they seemed rare so I bought two full sets, 3-SW.

For years I used them only for travel but after buying Hogan forged blades on eBay I was quickly irritated by the bag chatter. To heck with what others think. I started using the Tartans on the course and now I can't imagine going without them. I allow a private chuckle hearing other bags clank around while mine are wonderfully silent over my shoulder. It takes maybe 5 seconds to stick the cover back on. I do it while walking forward to the next shot.

Only problem: No one turns those covers in when I lose one. It's happened 4 or 5 times and I'm batting .000.

So they be scoffed at but somehow they're also a popular curiosity when stumbled upon.

I'm down to a little bit over one full set and have looked for backups many times on eBay but they never seem to show up.

I'm just going to start with a little observation: posters are criticizing specific words when people make analogies and comparison. It doesn't make you look particularly intelligent, nor does it improve your credibility. What would impress me is the day people started debating the principles of what is being argued, not specifics. Leave specifics and wording to legislation. Also, trying to claim the status quo as an argument is not good enough. You can't just say that because irons don't come with irons, you shouldn't need iron covers. That is not good enough. If all sets were issued with iron covers from 20 years ago until now, I'm sure that we would all use iron covers.

Now, to my opinion. There seems to be a disdain for iron covers because there is a certain stigma about the user. Iron covers tend to, and I don't particularly support this inference, imply that the user is weak, unmanly, 'prissy' or not a real golfer. Not true. I used to use covers. The best feeling was when you soundly beat those players who criticized your iron covers. Iron covers should not immediately place you below others on the social ladder. In fact, I respect those who choose to use iron covers out of principle and choose to take the brunt of the criticism. Their persistence and rationality certainly ranks much higher than those who don't use them because to them they seem unmanly or prissy and cannot find any other reason to hate them.

That is not to say that I like iron covers. Those who don't use irons covers surely have their own reasons. Mine? I got tired of using them, not that they wasted much time in your round. That and the fact that I now have enough money to not bother about reselling the irons. Each to their own.

However, hating iron covers purely on the basis of a social stigma should not have a place in this world.

Fair Dinkum!

only posers use iron covers, your woods will dent, irons are solid (or should be) so no need to cover. posers cover their irons so they will look pretty, because it is better to look good than it is to play good.

If one were to try posing with iron covers, how exactly would that work?

I mean, if you cover your irons with covers then that would mean that no one could actually see them except when you have a shot. Is it posing to oneself? Are they dbeing protected to look good to others or oneself?

Let me guess, you're one of those guys that hits an 8 iron 180 yards into a head wind.....?

Actually, to answer your first point, the walls on many drivers and some fairway woods are so thin that they actually can be dented pretty easily by accidentally hitting them with an iron when you put it back in the bag. I have seen it happen to a Taylormade Superquad TP. After I saw that I always put my headcover on my driver when I am done hitting it. I don't use headcovers for my irons, but they are X-14's so they are pretty old.

From the posts, seems as if you can break this down like this:

anal=iron covers non anal=no covers

We all know someone who is anal. There is NOTHING wrong with being anal. The funny thing is when you call someone anal, who is anal, the first thing they do is they deny that they are anal!

For the record, if you get a cover for your sand wedge, you are beyond anal.

My covers came with a SW cover. I use it. I don't care if you call me anal; I am obsessive-compulsive. People who buy my junk in the BST love it, so there. I have a pre-shot routine I stick to. I play a round in well under 3 hours if I am by myself so my OCD doesn't seem to slow anyone down.

I think the only place people are beyond anal is Amsterdam. I've never been there; they tell me its nice.

Head- I have a buddy that is OCD and I love buying golf equipment from him. Always in great shape at a great price.

And as I said, NOTHING wrong with being anal. I think we all have a little OCD every now and then. I do not know how many times I gone back to my office to make sure it is locked when I know that I locked it.

Just move to Asia. You get strange looks if you don't have iron covers. Heck, I don't have a bag cover and I get weird looks every week. I never used to use them but now I do. I actually kind of like them. I use them on my 4 year old set that never saw a cover before and my pings. How's that for making sense?

If you want them but don't want too much trouble from your pals, don't get the foam ones that look like mizuno condoms as the other guy said. Get something with a University logo or something. The zippered ones are extra fancy.

But then somebody please tell your friends to swap the covers around during your round. Classic.

I just bought a set of forged irons from a guy who used iron covers on them and I can say the irons looked brand new. Although I'm not a believer in irons covers for myself, I can see the value in them for the right person. I know I would spend more time looking for the one cover I dropped than anything and that would drive me and my playing partners nuts. And then the ball busting is another story......

Okay, Last post on this topic ever. I promise.

The funniest thing about this whole conversation is that we are all on a golfing blog site calling people dorky, OCD, and anal for using iron covers. There is a whole thread on here about paintfills. There is a whole section about putters. There is a golf style section. There is even a WITB Photo Edition. People post pics of their clubs, shoes, swings with CG effects. I have read threads about people sending their clubs in to get a new finish or to go out of their way to make their clubs look vintage. There is enough information on here to write a dissertation on Stack and Tilt. There is on guy on here with Tiger Woods plates on his car. You have got to be kidding me that anyone on this site has the Pro Vs to call anyone dorky. WE are all a bunch of golf dorks. This site was developed by golf dorks. Segregation within a demographic. Golfer on Golfer hating. It should be a golfer over any other. What's next? Anyone that play a 2-piece is just a down right herb (Black talk for Tool).
