I use iron covers because I walk and carry. I get pretty tired of hearing the clack of irons banging together with every step I take.

my golf towel is on the long side and I weave it between.. problem solved

From the posts, seems as if you can break this down like this:

anal=iron covers non anal=no covers

We all know someone who is anal. There is NOTHING wrong with being anal. The funny thing is when you call someone anal, who is anal, the first thing they do is they deny that they are anal!

For the record, if you get a cover for your sand wedge, you are beyond anal.

Thank you for the post. I had mistakenly used 3-PW when describing my Tartan iron covers. Your contribution made me realize I do have SW covers, so I edited.

I don't use iron covers, but certainly don't mind if you or anyone

else uses them, will have no disdain nor thought on the matter what so ever.

I love the guy that says he plays faster with iron covers. Ummmm, OK.

I once read where Chi Chi Rodriguez used to look for guys with iron covers if he wanted to hustle someone for some cache. Think about that.

To say that not using iron covers means you do not care of your clubs is silly, i clean mine after i use them. On Mizuno's web site it say they recommend NOT using head covers with their forged irons. Something about trapping chemicals in there and the club dregrading faster and/or rusting. I figure Mizuno knows a little more about their clubs than I do. That is why i do not use head covers for irons.

BTW, I do not care if others use them or not. It is their set of clubs.

Any guy with a towel hanging out of their back pocket has got to be using iron covers also. Throw in some golf sandals and you can legally kill him. :clapping:

And wearing jeans to top that and there could be a nuclear explosion.

Iron covers - sorry just don't get em. Stay clear. Like putting ketchup on your steak, Icky.

Irons get a beating, why bother slowing play down with headcovers?

as I take the club out of the bag and walk to the ball, I remove the cover. Not real sure what you mean by extra time.

I had never used iron covers before because i allways thought they were more trouble than their worth but i recently purchased new forged irons and i wanted to keep them from getting beat up while in the bag so i gave them a try and im glad i have done so , it keeps them from clanging around and they defineatly dont get knicked up as much

AMEN, the reasons I use them.

It's balance. you can be prissy about your woods, but you have to show some manhood too. The irons with nicks and dents are manly. It's like mother telling you to "put on your sweater Johnny--you'll catch a cold."

Golf has to have some football in it. Dirty, dented scratched irons are the manly wounds and external scars we bear from playing the game...

Also it shows an anal attitude...its a red flag for being imbalanced--doesn't mean you are--it just makes you think about the guy.

wow, never thought that the fact that I use iron covers would indicate that I show insignificant manhood. Having used beat up nicked up irons are manly and taking care of an expensive item is not manly? Not real sure how you got from point A to point B in your mind, but I am sure it was an interesting ride.....

as far as a sign of being imbalanced????? Again, iron covers=mental condition???? Seriously??? Somebody does something rational that you disagree with and your response is to say they are imbalanced or at least appear to be imbalanced???

As far as being anal, yea. I am anal. That is why I worked hard in college, law school, and my career over the last 9 years. It makes me good at my job. Thank goodness that there are jobs and careers out there for non-anal people....its called McDonalds.

if irons were supposed to be used with covers, then you would get iron covers when you bought irons

when you buy a driver, you get a headcover, when you buy a hybrid, you get a headcover, when you buy a FW, you get a headcover

anything involving headcovers that did not come with the clubs when purchased is inherently dorky

Geez, I did not get a golf ball with my driver, nor a tee, nor a bag, nor a glove, nor a cart, nor a course. I guess I am not supposed to use any of those with my clubs because they did not come with them. Thanks for the logical viewpoint. I guess that is why headcovers are called an accessory. They accessorize your clubs.

And my driver and 3 wood headcovers did not come with the clubs, I bought them separately later on. I mean seriously, are you calling my Darth Vader and Chewbacca driver and 3 wood headcovers dorky? (OK, you may win on that point.)

as far as the covers I use, they are clear. I get the enjoyment of seeing my clubs while knowing that I am doing what I can to protect them.

I use iron covers. It allows me to get into more fights on the course. I also use the pencils and pens in my pocket protector to stab my victim repeatedly as they lie on the ground.

the items you mention, balls, tee, bag, course are required in order to play golf

try golfing one day without a bag, then try again a different day without headcovers and see which day you have more fun.

headcovers are not required to play golf, they come for free with some clubs so I use them on those clubs

either way, tell Darth, Chewie, Darth nihilus, the gamorian guard and the whole crew that I said hi

this makes more sense than all the other silly arguments here. "more trouble than they are worth" is pretty much the same as, "look stupid" and "are for nerds". the pros dont use them and they dont really "look" good, and they are a pain in the a**. add on the tradition factor and there's your reason most people dont use and dont like them.

the poster above bought new, beautiful, expensive irons and rightly was very protective of them. kudos to him for loving his purchase and not caring what anyone else thinks. though i cannot stand iron OR putter covers (separate argument), i can understand wanting to protect your new babies.

however, because pros dont use covers, obviously there is no lasting or pertinent damage being done to the irons in the bag. as such, i can also understand the argument that being so protective over the continued good looks of a purchase is no better than being protective of your cool image in the anti-nerds club (of which i am a proud member).

If you had a Ferrari, would you keep it in the garage between uses?

yes, but I wouldn't bring a car cover with me and put a car cover on it whenever I parked it somewhere outdoors

Would you park between a pair of Yugos? Of course not, you'd take care of it.

What I find amusing is that people who use the covers don't seem to care what other people do. Use them or don't, it's all good.

On the other hand, the guys who don't use them have to have something to say about those who do. Almost universally negative, and one guy even felt it had something to do with his manhood. The guys who don't use them seem to think they can tell something about the guys who use them, again always negative and always inferior to themselves, when in reality the only thing you can say with certainty is that someone who uses covers likes to take care of his gear.

You tell me who has the issues...

ok, thats a very good point and unfortunately, i have to agree with you. i can only offer again my POV:

but yeah, who friggin cares, you're spot on about that.

i dont use them and i dont like them but do what you want. all i can say though, is that the undeserved bias against iron covers probably grows from the widely-accepted notion that anyone who uses them must be cluless and not a very good player. not saying its right, just saying its kind of a fact (the opinion, not the skill of the player).

I certainly understand why people don't use them. I don't use them with cast clubs.

I'd also agree that there is no damage that effects play or pros would definitely be all over them... although if pros made what I make and had to buy their own gear they'd be all over the covers like flies on poop.

So it goes. Hopefully, I'll get to play one of the egomaniacs who think covers make one clueless and not a very good player. I'm not scratch, but I can certainly hold my own...

Well i gotta say guys and gals it certainly has been an emotional topic this one!

Who knew some pieces of plastic attached to the old weapons would stir up such controversy and foaming of mouths!!??

Personally I have never used these funny lookin sheaths of protection.

Always rode "bare-back" across the prairie!!

After reading blurry eyed though 3 pages of replys to the OP's question, i'm surprised that nobody has mentioned the extra weight associated with lugging the sack o bats round the links with these covers on???

Not that i would berate another player who uses these...to each his own i say!!

Always played blades (or musclebacks as they are now! Thats another thread in the offing im sure!!)

And feel that there is nothing better than a dinged iron or 2, just tells me that they aren't slackin!!

Let young chi chi wander the bushes forever i say!! For his attempts to find some easy meat im sure will backfire soon! With the multitude of WRX'rs out there now he is inevitably gonna pick the wrong chap soon and then he really will get mad!!!

Protect em if ya got em!!

ive always been kinda fascinated how, regardless of the money, pros really hold on to their clubs and use them for a while. im by no means an expert, but it seems that when a pro has to replace a club he's been using, it's kind of a big deal, or at least a major inconvenience and something they do not like to do. considering this attachment, it only bolsters the anti iron cover argument.

anyhow, i definitely see why you would want to keep your irons from being damaged, considering the cost. but i think the anal theory is partly true, and its not derrogatory. i'm pretty anal, especially about cleaning my clubs constantly and the placement of every last piece of lint in my bag. however, im not THAT anal that im going to try to protect a piece of metal that i use to consitently swing with all my might into a hard object and the ground.

as far as the woods, they are just more fragile and even little scratches look awkward and out of place (not so much on an iron, where scratches, i think, look classy and proven). but, truth is, if i lost my hybrid cover, i probably wouldnt give a crap.

I use iron covers and don't care what anybody thinks. It takes no more time to take them of and put them on than not using them. Okay, maybe 7 seconds, but whos counting. They protect my clubs. For all of you with a disdain for iron covers, why do you use them on your putter and driver? So protecting two or three clubs with covers is okay but not all of them? That makes as much sense has having Britney Spears babysit your kids or having Paris Hilton give you morality lessons.

If you spring $2500 for a set of soft Japanese forged irons you might reconsider head covers on at least every other iron to prevent damage which frankly looks lousy, especially on the toes of the clubs. Who on earth should care what you think anyway as to what is "anal"?

because small dings do not effect the ability of the iron to put a golf ball on target

some of us are more into clubs that work well, and looking nice is a secondary consideration

some of us don't care if our soft forged irons have dings in them

others find the appearance of the club to be equal or of greater importance than it's ability to perform it's job (nothing wrong with that, just a different set of priorities)

the price has nothing to do with it,if you're too concerned about damaging them to enjoy them you should probably have the clubs on a shelf somewhere rather than in your golf bag, $200 or $2000

Actually, the only reason I use one on my driver is to protect the shaft. If my driver was steel shafted, I wouldn't use one. And I don't use one on my putter.

WOW - lots of opinions here on this topic, and I thought I'd add my $0.02. My dad grew up playing golf and was dirt poor - bought every club he's ever owned - always had iron covers to protect his clubs b/c he couldn't afford not to. He taught me how to play the game and I've also used them since my first set. I like looking down at my irons and seeing them clean and looking almost brand new (even though they may be 5 years old) - personal opinion - end of story.

And for those of you who think it slows down play if you use iron covers, wake up. You're sliding a piece of rubber/foam/plastic off of a metal object (usually when you're walking to address your ball). I don't know of one time that I or anyone I've played with that has iron covers has ever slowed down play, whereas I can recall numerous times that I have waited on the 20 hcap (without headcovers!!) that thinks he needs 6 practice swings before each and every shot. IT'S A GAME - last time I checked, iron covers don't determine whether you score well or not.

I'd agree with the argument that using iron covers doesn't slow down play.

I've never seen a set of irons yet though that have been rendered unplayable simply through contact with one another as the bag is carried.

Several people have mentioned that having iron covers don't have anything to do with someone's golf ability. Generally anyone that uses iron covers usually aren't very good. There may be something to that. I've played golf tournaments at every level: am, college, pro. I have never one time played in a tournament with someone using iron covers.

I've also never had a club damaged from "banging" into another. But I don't blame people from wanting to feel like they are protecting their investment. The main thing with iron covers is that they just look really bad.

I use iron covers because I walk and the chattering of my clubs annoys me. I used them when I was a single digit handicap and now that I have a family and I play much less and my handicap has balooned I still use them. I do however give some thought to people who don't want little chips and nicks in the irons because they want to keep their stuff nice looking. Not all of us can afford new clubs every year.
