Why the disdain for iron covers? (Merged Iron Cover Topics)

Recommended Posts

Several people have mentioned that having iron covers don't have anything to do with someone's golf ability. Generally anyone that uses iron covers usually aren't very good. There may be something to that. I've played golf tournaments at every level: am, college, pro. I have never one time played in a tournament with someone using iron covers.

I've also never had a club damaged from "banging" into another. But I don't blame people from wanting to feel like they are protecting their investment. The main thing with iron covers is that they just look really bad.

Mine are plain black neoprene in a black bag with black white and red wood covers. What's so bad looking about that?

And your pocket protector may match your shirt and tie, but that doesn't make it a good look.

Actually, I wear a labcoat all day.Don't worry, my pens are kept in check. My old man wore a pocket protector for years and some would consider him well respected for his engineering skills and his golf game. Why can't you accecpt that some people just like to cover their irons? Some people like to use long putters. I'll bet you hate that too. People are different. Deal with it. By the way, the reliance on the pocket protector analogy comments make you sound like you have nothing better say. Whats next, comments about your purse not matching your shoes?

I was just replying to your question about how your protectors look. You're the one that made it sound like they looked good because they matched. I don't really care if you use them or not, but I think it's a horrible look even if they are color coordinated. If Tiger Woods used them, I'd still think it was a horrible look. And the pocket protector is the perfect analogy, it's something that provides some sort of protection but looks awful. Your old man may have been the best engineer in the world, but if he wore a pocket protector, it was a bad look. It's nothing personal, it's just my opinion. I think pleated pants look horrrible, too. I won't wear them, but I don't care if others do, and I don't care if you use iron or pocket protectors.

Why do you care so much? Why are iron covers so offensive to you? I think you have 14 clubs to worry about and none of them are in my bag or anyone elses but your own. I would reccomend making your bag a shining example for all of us to follow...If we choose to.

For such a non-issue, this topic just keeps going. I don't use covers for my irons but if I did I couldn't care less what anyone else is thinking. I have more to worry about on the golf course other than my playing opponents and their golf clubs. Way to many people try to convey their likes and dislikes onto others.

The most ridiculous argument is it slows play down. On a average par 72 course, one would hit an iron 18 times. If it took 5 seconds to fiddle with an iron cover, that would ad 90 seconds to a round of golf. If 90 seconds or even double that bother you, you may need to look at who is anal and who is not.

How many times do I have to say that I don't care? Use all of the iron covers you want. Use two iron covers for each club if you want, I don't care. They aren't offensive to me at all. I just think they look bad. That's my opinion, I'm sorry if it doesn't match yours. I can't believe anyone could be this defensive over such a non-issue.

Can we combine this thread with the Wie thread so we can have useless, angry and unresolvable topics all in one convenient place?

I used iron covers a long time ago. I play with friend who just bought some iron covers, I made fun of them the first time we played, and haven't bothered again.

I did give him my old ball retriever just to complete look.

Also I did hear that Michelle Wie is using covers on her irons now, but that's another topic. :russian_roulette:

That's funny. I hate ball retrievers and refuse to buy one. This has to do with golfing with my grandfather. He had always bought the latests and greatest ball retriever from K Mart and go ball dipping for almost an hour during play. He knew all the "hot spots" in the water at all of the local courses. It was frustrating waiting to hit my ball and letting group after group through while he did his thing. If you have a ball retriever, have at it. I just can't see myself carrying one of those, but I still use covers. I'm a weird guy.

it's all pretty simple

people who don't care about something (iron dings) think you're stupid if you do care about them

just like someone who takes their car through a gas station carwash probably thinks a guy who spends 3 hours cleaning his interior with a q-tip is an idiot

it's just something that many people do, on many fronts

you care about something that I think is stupid, hence you are stupid

note: this is an explanation of where the disdain comes from, I do not mean to be calling iron cover users names by this post so don't get all excited.

Wheres the matching ball retriever? :russian_roulette: :)

Dude. You gotta draw the line somewhere. Besides a ball retriever would take up valuble space that i have reserved for a beer tap.

let me say, i am very appreciative of this guy's reasons for using iron covers. because they are not the norm, its always interesting to hear why people still use them.

but yeah, his bag looks good if he plays goalie for the Penguins.

Close. I'm a huge Steelers fan.

what's that thing between your 5 iron and putter that looks like a tube?

maybe we should start a thread discussing if we need one of those (I really don't know what it is)

I'm glad you like your bag, It's not my style but I bet it would go over big in Florida

I don't know the actual name for it. I've just always called it a ball tube. It holds about 20 balls in it. When I go to the course I'm usually there all day. I got tired of lugging around a shag bag so I got one of the ball tubes. I can practice, throw the tube in my bag then play without lugging the shag bag around or taking an extra trip back out to the car. The only downside is that it does add a little weight to your bag when carrying, but I use a push cart so it isn't a issue for me.

That's a sweet set up dude. Nice clean lines, and nothing but yellow and black. What bag brand is that which is actually holding the clubs?
Ogio according to his sig.

Yep, its an Ogio. Funny thing is my sons bag, the little one that says Cobra on it, is made by Ogio as well. Some people on here have had problems with their Ogio bags, but so far mine has been great.

does it come with a beer tap?

I'm working on that. The problem is I'm a beer snob, and everything they have on tap around here is crap.

The plastic thing is a Klikka Tube (the 'k' obsession may well be down to me, and the actual name may actually be spelled with a 'c') and is beloved of the senior members at my club who suffer with bad backs.

The object of much ridicule again; (mainly by those who pick up balls with a sand wedge) but, honestly, they're a good bit of kit - albeit they don't hold enough balls for true range rats unless you carry about eight of them at a time. As a man who is a dab hand at the old 'sand wedge flick' I still end up with a sore left shoulder after trudging round and picking up 100+ balls and catching them in the praccy bag.

I've got 2 of those tubes stuck in my bag, they both carry 20 each, 40 is enough for the small practise area available to me though!

Anyway a quote from Mizuno is:

"Mizuno recommends that headcovers are only used while playing and transporting your irons. These should then be removed whilst the clubs are stored. Leaving headcovers on during storage will encourage your irons to rust."

I think this is totally true, everything else is completly up to personal preference.

They don't make a 1 or 2 iron cover so I'm not playing.

And hardstepping the covers would lead to me having a nervous breakdown before I finished 9 holes.

So is this the wrong thread to talk about a guy who not only has a Ball Retriever, a Ball Finder Scout, Iron Head Covers onto which he's sown little socks to "Protect the Shafts" but has also now fitted Shaft Skinz to his clubs to protect the shafts from getting marked in his carry bag which he's fitted out with plastic tubes to keep all the clubs seperated and organised as opposed to buying a 14-Way Divider Bag. He's also just equipped his putter with one of these lovely NeverBend Grips with the little sucker on the end so he doesn't have to bend down to pick his ball up.

Should this guy be entitled to suffer large amounts of ridicule when I next play with him?

Anxiety saver: Taking the cover off all the clubs as they come out of the bag has prevented me from leaving a wedge or short iron greenside only to discover it 1,2,or 3 holes later. If there's a cover in my pocket, there's a club of mine not in the bag. I'll count the clubs in the bag 2-3 times a round anyway.

Time waster: Not. Slipping the covers off and on is done while doing something I'd be doing anyway: walking to my ball/cart. If carrying, it's done while approaching my ball or walking to my next shot.

When I bought my 690CBs a few years ago(at the top retail price at that....:-( ..), I got a set of iron covers as well. Part of the reason was to keep them looking pristine, yes. But after about 10 rounds witht eh clubs, they starting getting nicks anyway, so the iron covers became less appealing. I can totally understand the security concern. There was a run on some clubs at my old course. Drivers mainly, but still, shiny titleists would probably get someone attention. Even though I've gone back to my Mizuno blades, I still have the same concern, but now I keep the rain hood on an unzipped during a round. Except for a few minutes in the pro shop paying/singing in/whatever my bag is never very far and in complete view at all times.

The main reason I got rid of the iron covers though: they kept falling off! The 4 iron cover was particularly guilty in this regard. I walk, so the clubs would clatter. I'd finish the round, or I wouldn't notice for a few holes, that one had fallen off. I got tired of it after a little bit.

I do have wood headcovers, but had to get ones other than the one that came with the club since the neck wasn't long enough. Putter has a cover as well so that if the neck of the driver cover did come up, the putter wouldn't do damage.

Nice comment......very prejudice :) black%20eye.gif

1. What if the guy actually IS gay ?

2. What if the guy doesn't really care what other people think about him ?

Who honestly cares if you use irons covers? They serve a good purpose...sure. I don't use them and I really don't know why since I have one on my driver and 16 degree hybrid as well as my putter. I guess if I paid the retail price of $1,000 for my AP2's then I'd think about it.
