Why the disdain for iron covers? (Merged Iron Cover Topics)

Recommended Posts

There is one reason, and one reason only for NOT using iron covers......and that is personal preference. If someone thinks they are stupid...or look dumb....or waste time....or whatever....it is simply their opinion.

There are however, plenty of reasons FOR using them......most importantly, personal preference. But it is also a fact that they keep your clubs looking much better. It's also a fact that they help you from leaving clubs behind. It's also a fact that it stops bag chatter that may annoy someone. It is also a fact that they will help maintaint the resale value of your irons. I got more...but I am tired :birthday:

Now I will say, that when I played Ping i3s and some other sets...I did not use covers. No need to...the cast heads are super resistant to marking. But ever since I plunked down big dollars on my custom Scratch blades....you better believe that I use them now. I also used to wonder why guys playing 'average' irons were using covers. Posers? Fashion challenged? Nope...who is to say what those clubs meant to that person....it's their hard earned money and their choice to protect them or not.

So it's your money...and if you choose to go without covers, good for you. While I do prefer the look of no covers and also enjoy the sound of bag chatter (to a point)....I just could not get over beating the crap out of those SB-1s.

I have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed reading many of these posts.

This reply is so late that nobody will likely read it, oh well.

I don't have thousands of bucks invested in my clubs and I use iron covers. I tried one of the Bennington Quiet Organizers. The problem was that the bag didn't sit well in most carts because it was gigundous. I then switched to a Puma bag that has a great shoulder strap system. I now need the covers even worse because I hate the sound of the clubheads clicking together as I walk the holes.

I also take great pride in cleaning my clubs. So, guess that makes me anal as well. I have been looking to upgrade iron covers to the ClubGlove Gloveskins. I wanted to get some obscure Japanese iron cover but they were all branded by Adidas or Mizuno, etc. Go on and get the covers; keep your clubs beautiful and who cares if they call you anal. They are your clubs...as has been stated a number of times.

You want to get worse? I want to get shaft covers from a site like ShaftSkinz. The problem is they don't have solid colors and I am not really interested in snake skin or flame patterns on all my clubs. If I played like someone on tour then I could afford to do so. Since I don't, I would look like a major wank.

Go back to trusty PingWRX S57 - they are not as durable as your G10 irons, but much more durable than your ZB Forged, and almost as good feeling - this coming from a guy, who plays Miura and Mizuno forged irons :victory:

Iron covers look funny to me, I also think it's funny when people refer to their golf clubs as "tools" or "precision" instruments. Come on, you are not doing surgery out there on the golf course, you are playing a game.

My dad uses covers on all of his clubs and I always give him a hard time about it, yes his clubs look brand new and they are probably a year old or so and he plays about 50 rounds a year but he is still a dork and he is anal about everything but that is fine. His choice, does not change my oppinion though.

I typically won't say anything to anyone who I get paired up with if they have covers on their irons but if they start slowing the pace of play up because they are messing around with the covers all the time, I have no problem speaking up. So far I have only had to say something once and for the rest of the round they did not even bother with the covers anymore. We were approaching a 6 hour round with no one in front of us because it took the guy 5 minutes to hit each shot with the cleaning, the practice swings, the cleaing again then trying to find the cover to put back on the iron, oh and he had to have his bag in a certain order before he drove away to hit his next shot. It was rediculous, he was playing some knock off club too and sucked.

To each their own. I will say that iron covers motivated me to break 40 for 9 holes for the first time. During my weekly golf league I was paired up with a guy who I had not met before. Before teeing off he kept making increasingly rude comments about my iron covers and that I must be a complete hack. It did not make me angry, just more focused. I was determined to beat this guy. I focused on hitting the fairways, hitting greens, making good lag putts and making my pars. I ended up +2 on a par 36 and beat the guy by 4 shots. He apologized for the rude comments and we shook hands afterward. Seemed to rattle him that he could not rattle me about my gear. As I said, to each their own. It helped me break a personal performance barrier and for that I will continue to use the unsightly covers.

I have a Sunmountain 14 dividers bag and a Sunmountain three-wheeler. I play +/- 200 rds/yr. I clean my clubs after every round, that's the way it is.

If the bag is in the car I put covers on my irons, when the bag is on a motor cart I put the covers on my irons, that is also the way it is.

No need to elaborate any further! :hi:

My buddy Steve uses iron covers and of course he has to towel the club and clean the grooves before putting the cover one. He waits until it is his turn to putt before lining up his putt from all four directions. He also takes a minimum of 7-10 practice swings after he tees his ball up and 5-6 from the fairway. Rounds with Steve last a minimum of 6 hours, often times 8 hours. Get my drift...

I keep rubber headcovers on my Titleist 660's and every other set of forged blades I've played. Same set of red iron covers I've always had. I walk with them ... ride with them. They keep my irons from those nasty bag chatter dings.

I've played 7200 yd course walking in 2 hours, riding in 1.5 hours, cleaning and recovering each iron between shots. I don't take practice swings.

My clubs are precise tools so I take care of them.

No one seems to mind me using them, especially while taking their money.

I like bag chatter. I like the sound of clubs clinking together. If my clubs have plenty of bag chatter that means they have been in the bag for a while...if they've been in the bag for a while they must be good. Bag chatter adds character. I clean my clubs after every use too. It's not as if I don't take care of my equipment, I'm quite fanatical about cleaning my clubs but headcovers on my irons doesn't make sense. Woods and hybrids can get dented which will affect performance which is not the case with irons. I don't know....I don't use them....I don't care if you do....Don't be offended if I chuckle at you though. Nothing personal, they just look funny.............

Good luck Ebaying them once they are all clattered up. According to your logic, you don't mind door dings on your car either...

Has absolutely nothing to do with ironhead covers. You need to do your friend Steve (and everyone else) a big favour. You need to GO with him and take up TENNIS together. More than 5 hours...You're kidding for sure...I just took a strike at your lure didn't I?

This was a fun post.

I am for no iron covers, or any cover.

Only way I can find 690MB for less than $200 is because of people who don't use covers.

Only way I can find MP-32 for less than $300 is because of people who don't use covers.

Only way I can find Cameron for less than $60 is because of people who don't use covers.

Only way I can find my back up R7 dirt cheap is because of people who don't use covers.

I don't use iron covers because they are dinged up already. :ok:

People who use iron cover is a ****** because they are taking money away from my wallet.

People who don't use iron cover and restore those dings are also ****** because of the same reason above.

They really don't look all that good tho. But then so are the two-ball putter or spyder.

Almost all set for 2021

Good luck Ebaying them once they are all clattered up. According to your logic, you don't mind door dings on your car either...

do you buy your clubs for yourself to use, or for the next guy you sell them too

maybe you should buy standard clubs rather than being fitted too, as a custom fit set will have a smaller market that you'll be able to re-sell them to

do you add http://dingbatsales.com/ to your car's doors and fenders? I mean, they don't look great, but it's better than a door ding right?

They seem like a pain in the arse (I have enough trouble keeping track of headcovers for two woods, two hybrids, and a putter :help: ), but if you care a lot about preventing your clubs from getting dinged up, I could see why you'd use them.

Just got new forged irons and wedges. Though I got a good deal I was thinking of protecting the investment. Your thoughts on the appearance and manliness of using iron covers?

Yes, you will be. Now move on up to the red tees, sweet cheeks! ;-)

JUST KIDDING. Do whatever you want, but there was a lengthy thread about this last year.

i just dont think that they are that useful...i have forged irons and unless youre constantly speeding over bumps in a golf cart regular bag chatter wont do much to your clubs at all...i just see iron covers as a waste of time on the course when your fiddling around with them every shot and you will inevitable lose one every now and again which will be annoying not only for you but whoever is playing with you if you have to go back a hole to look for it. i just dont think theyre worth it...but this is coming from a guy who doesnt even use headcovers on his woods most of the time. just my $.02

Personally, I don't like them.

I look at golf clubs as tools; (this applies to irons and wedges) tools get dirty when you use them.

However:

If you regularly sell irons that you have used for a short period of time, then I could see why you would want to keep the re-sale value as high as possible. I don't do this, which I suppose is why I have no use for them.
