Why the disdain for iron covers? (Merged Iron Cover Topics)

I don't use them myself (mostly because I've been told they will lock in moisture and rust my Mizzy's), but I wouldn't mind having some neoprene ones when I walk to eliminate clattering (both noise and dings). I don't understand the lambaste behind the usage of them. I do, however, cannot stand playing with someone who has to clean his club after every shot and replace the headcover while remaining stationary instead of doing it while they're walking.

I've had my clubs since they were available and they still look pretty nice. I hit balls just about everyday, so taking them in and out of the car can bang em' up pretty good. They are a pain some times, but.... I also walk, so I don't care to listen to the clacking while walking. Besides who gives a rats ___ what people think!

That seems crazy to me. I think the sound of clattering clubs as you walk is one of the simple pleasures of golf.

That seems crazy to me. I think the sound of clattering clubs as you walk is one of the simple pleasures of golf.

Well, most of the time I don't mind it. But when you play a course with a lot of undulation, it kind of sucks hearing them bang all over the place. I would imagine it would feel pretty much the same way as listening to a spouse beat your kids.

And no sound is better than steel spikes on a cart path. Takes me back.

I use iron covers when the bag goes in the trunk and, when using a motorized cart (very seldom).

When I walk (99%, I have a Sunmountain three-wheeler), I remove them as I go along and, put them back on after I'm finished playing for the day.

If it bothers anybody, I haven't noticed yet...I doubt very much if I would care.

I played fairly regularly with a guy who used iron covers. He'd slip them off on his way to the shot, into his back pocket before the swing and back onto the club after a quick wipe down while walking. Took him no extra time to use them. So if used in a smart manner, there's no reason to slow up a game because of them. The problem is that many people can't seem to get this right.

I'm one of them. I tried them out to keep down on the clatter, and it was a total waste of time for me. A few rounds later, they were in a drawer only to emerge again for use when traveling.

Some people will look at you like you are nuts, but there are far worse offenses then using head covers.

I found this thread rather amusing...how can something so simple as iron covers cause so much disagreement. I have to admit that I do use them, but only during travel. I drive a truck, and have a toolbox in the back that is just big enough to hold my golf bag. The very first set of clubs I had got a lot of scratches and dings from being in my truck that I wanted to do something to take care of them a little. When they are in a toolbox, I can't see how much they move around...and it's not like trucks are the smoothest rides. I just want them to last as long as possible, but as soon as I get to the course, they come off. If I ding up my club while playing, so be it. They may be a hassle sometimes, but I just want to take care of them and make them last.
