Replace 15* 3-wood with 18* hybrid?

Im thinking about replacing my 15* 3-wood with a Mizuno MP Fli Hi 18*. I hit my 21* Fli Hi pretty well, but I hit my 3-wood poorly, so for me it seems like a no-brainer, but Id like some input on this.

I think you should go for it. I actually don't have anything between 3 iron and driver and am trying to fill the gap. I just hit the Titleist 906F4 in a 17 degree and the 18 fli hi. It's a close call between those two, but I think I can manage around the course without a 3 wood as long as I have one of those two in the bag.

the big differance you will see is in length. really for most it is a toos up between a 5 wood and 2 hybrid but I think you will be stretching to much from 3 wood.

I have a 15 degree 3 wood and an 18 degree hybrid in the bag. The 18 degree is really a 5 wood replacement, not a 3 wood replacement. But hey, if you have to make room and you don't hit your 3 wood well, then try it. To me, saving strokes is better than the distance factor, and if you can't hit your 3 wood, then you are probably giving some strokes away somewhere.

Yeah, I kinda figured Id be giving up some distance. The way I look at it though, at least with the 18* I have a chance of keeping it in the short grass. With the 3-wood, its a huge slice every time.

If I could manage to hit the ball 230-250 yards off the tee and land it in the fairway, I think it would do a lot to lower my scores.

Right now, if I tee-off with a driver or 3-wood, I always slice my tee shot into the rough, which forces me to be near perfect with my irons, wedges and putter just to make bogey.

I guess I have a different opinion but why not buy a newer more forgiving 3w? I bet that PT is hard to hit? Maybe a Ping G10 or 07 Burner both are forgiving and nice stuff. You cannot be a sucessful golfer having to hit extra long second shots into every green. IMO Todd

Another option to look at could be the 16* Adams Pro Idea Gold with that great shaft in it. I've been think about the same move.

I just replaced my three wood with an Adams 14deg Idea pro hybrid and I couldn't be happier. Lots more control and I'm even hitting the hybrid further.

Instead of 18 degree Fli Hi, replace the 3 wood with 17 degree Fli Hi CLK. I swapped out my 15 degree 3 wood with it 2 years ago, and never looked back. Easier to hit off the deck/rough, and goes just as far. On the tee, I did lose about 10 yards, compared to 3 wood, but now just de-loft it a bit, and got that 10 yards back and more. De-lofting with no tee off the short stuff.... doesn't work so hot (tends to dig into the grass, causing fat shots).

 

Out of all the clubs in my bag, never could hit that 3 wood consistantly, especially from the fairway. Hybrid, at least for me is 100% easier to hit from the fairway, no more thin/fat shots ever, also much more accurate. Also, from 250 yards out, never going to hit the green from the rough with 3 wood anyway, at least the hybrid gives it a better chance of advancing the ball 200+ yards. Think shorter shaft on the hybrid is key to making it easier to make better contact.

 

Best part of dropping the 3 wood, allowed me to drop another wedge into the bag for 4 wedge setup (P, GW, SW, LW) which helped my score much more than topped 3 wood from 270 out.

I agree with the poster above about considering your options for a more forgiving Driver and or at least 3 wood. I think you will find that the newer stuff is way more forgiving than an old PT 3 wood and a lower-lofted 975J. Get properly fit and you will cut down on the slices bigtime.

A Titleist PT15 3-wood. That's a real man's club. I remember when Tiger had that in his bag. Think that's when he was playing a Titleist 975 with a DG X100 shaft. An old friend of mine used to have them in his bag. I think he eventually replaced them with TM V-Steels.

 

I'd look at getting an easier to hit 3 wood. Ping g10 is pretty decent. I just got an Adams Insight XTD Pro 14.5*. It's stupid-easy to hit and not to bad as far as being able to work the ball. Also got an Adams Pro Gold 20* Hybrid w/Martrix shaft. Also very easy to hit and workable. If you want to go down the route of replacing your 3-w with a hybrid, you may want to check out the 16* version of the Pro Gold.

Yep, do it. I went from 15* 3 wood to 17* 4 wood. Then took out the 4 wood and added a 17* hybrid. The hybrid is MUCH more accurate than the 4 wood and the distance is not more than 10 yards different. I rarely need the 17* to go for the green, but if I do it's money. Really it is used mostly from the tee on tight/short par 4's.

 

If you want an easy to hit hybrid, try an Adams boxer, Nike Sumo, or a Ping G10/Rapture.

Change the shaft, don't give up on

the 3 wood.

 

Most of the OEM provide 3 woods with

weak shafts, specially since the heads are

heavyer that the driver's head by 10 grams

or even more.

 

Try a heavyer stiffer shaft or even an X-flex!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the 3 wood is 230 way out to the right versus an 18* FliHi 215 somewhere on the fairway? I'd take the 18* FliHi every single time.

I dropped the 3 wood this summer and am not looking back. I play a Mizuno CLK Hybrid 17* and I hit it 230 upwards of 245 if I nut it. The great part is I can hit it out of the rough and under trees - great chip out club. I can shape it better than a 3 wood and the shorter steel shaft has great control. I have hit more par 5's in 2 with this just because of accuracy - or if I miss I have a short chip for a 3rd shot. It also plays great on tight par 4's. You have to give up some things in this game and this club is just a lot more versatile for me. It is a 3 wood, 4 wood, 5 wood, 2 iron all in one. It's also the ONLY hybrid I hit well - heck I can't even hit the 20* model of the same brand. I think it is the loft and the fact that I can hit it like a wood and not an iron. I can sweep it like a wood. I now have a lot more confidence with this part of my game - addition by subtraction.

I just replaced the nike sumo 3 wood with a sumo2 17* hybrid. I hit the hybrid almost as far as the 3 wood and it's easier for me to hit it off the deck.
