New Putter

I've had a love hate relationship with my DFX 2-Ball Blade for the past 3 years. It was the first club I got when I was 'updating' my set. My two summer jobs really helped out for college and I feel that I have a decent amount of cash left to treat myself to a new putter. I'd like to go with an anser style or a blade style putter. I don't want to get another mallet.

 

I was thinking about these brands:

C&L (I'm not too big on the customizing though)

T.P. Mills Trad II or Classic

Scotty Cameron Studio Stainless

 

 

I have around $300 to spend. I am not limiting myself to these putters. I love Bettinardi, Guage Design, Byron, and Slighter putters aswell but I think those are out of my price range. Any comments or recommendations?

All of those models are great, it really depends on the options you want, what kind of finish, what type of steel, insert or no insert, custom loft lie and length.

I'd put the holy trinity of $300 putters at: Mills, C&L, and Byron (You can get a Byron in your price range). You really can't go wrong with any of the three.

 

Each of their $300 offerings are closer in quality to Cameron's $2,000 putters than his $300 Studio Selects.

 

I haven't owned a Byron (I've owned the rest), but I'd rank them:

1. Mills (I'm particular to the old-fashioned styles)

2. C&L/Byron

3. Cameron off-the-rack, including Studio Select

The Bettinardi C Series is not out of your price range: they are $230 brand new and cheaper than that on ebay. In the C Series you have 3 Anser-type heads to choose from: C01, C02 and C03.

 

You could also look at the Black Carbon series, which has the BC1. It does not have a plumber's neck but it has the same toe hang and feel as a plumber's neck putter. The BC's are $250 brand new and cheaper on ebay.

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm not really looking to get the Mizuno Bettinardi series, I was talking about the DASS, etc...

 

Finish: I'm not set on a particular finish as of now. I like the look of the Mills though.

Steel: I'm leaning towards carbon for a softer steel but 303GS and 304GS aren't out of the mix.

Insert: No insert

Loft/Lie Options: This isn't too important as I will probably take the putter in to get it bent but if it comes with it then it's defidently not a bad thing.

 

What Byron putters can I afford at this price range? Also, how much are used Slighter putters such as the Tacoma? (and some of the cheaper ones)

I cant say anything about the C&L because I dont have any firsthand experience with it but its hard to go wrong with either of your other 2 choices with the Mills or Cameron

if you're not big on customization, we stock finished putters with stock stamps and even do some putters with hardly any stamps which look pretty cool also.

 

you can't go wrong with the list there.

If you keep an eye out...you can get a Mills or Whitlam (Gauge Design) easily under $300...

How does someone get a non-mizuno bettinardi?

neither will have a non-mizuno Bettinardi for less than $600, but you can pick them up on eBay occasionally in the $400 range. I have a C series and love it, but if you go that route get the "H" for heavy 340g.

OK, rule out the Mizunos then.

 

If you live where the humidity is high having a carbon steel putter without a sealing finish will require a lot of care to keep it from rusting. This is why I will mainly be using Lamont's polymer finishes on my Carbon steel putters once I can get the prototypes right. Hopefully that will be soon. Don't forget that the material is not all that makes the putter feel/sound soft. Deep face milling can do this as well and can easily make a 303 stainless head feel as soft as a carbon steel.

 

Well, byron, slighter, c&L, Lux and most of the members of this board will do loft and lie as part of your putter package.

 

I cannot speak to anything other than Byron, Scotty, Bett, Gauge as I have had at least one of each of them. I have putted with a C&L that a friend has and they are all great and each has their strong points.

 

Mainly it comes down to how much work you want to do to your putter, that will help wittle down some then style, if you want an "exact" anser style putter that brings it down more.

We can make you a Machine M1A Fixer or Adjuster for 300. The fixer you decide the weight on, and it is set. On the adjuster, you can adjust the weight of the putter as you like.

I have a C&L and a Byron and you WILL not go wrong with either. I have a Carbon Byron and a SS C&L and each has its own style but both are top notch. Contact Zman on here because he might could work you a deal for 300, but you cant go wrong with either. My next adventure is probaly a Machine because they look sweet and the way you can change alot of stuff is #1

Take a look at the Sizemore putters. The SB-1 is really sweet and they had a demo posted for sale on here for $140. Same quality as all te rest premium putters at a little petter price. Excellent putter by the way..

i'd get one myself but i'm hanging around for the oo7 version

if i were you, i'd buy one of the yes putters. they're priced around 150 new.......

You could save yourself almost 200 dollars if you have any interest in a Lux Putter, if I recall you can get whatever finish you want and can get an Iomic and stuff like that on those for like 120.

Yes Putters! - I didn't like the sightline on the top or the look of them at address.

 

My choises are:

T.P. Mills Trad II

Byron 006

C&L

SC Studio Stainless

 

From top to bottom; the top is what I'm most interested in at the moment. I haven't heard much about the Machine putters so I didn't put them on the list. The Klassic is tempting though. Any input?
