The Cameron Disease

Really no different than what's going on in the spirit world with Tequila. Absolut may have been the originator - marketing made it seem like they had pedigreed potatoes yielding extraordinary vodka. It's a spud, for crissakes!

All putters work and most golfers can't putt. Any vodka will loosen you up and who can taste the difference in a mixed drink? But you won't be taking that cutie from Acquisitions & Mergers home if you specify Majorska for her vodka and tonic and who can deny you are serious about your short game when you 3-putt with an expensive flatstick?

"How will I know it's good if it's not expensive?" People who ask themselves that question about goods or services can rest assured someone will eventually provide the appropriately expensive anser.

uhmmm, pretty sure you meant vodka. Also, Absolut is not a potato vodka. It is a grain vodka as most are now days. As for marketing making it seem like it was awesome, well, that was for those that are easily swayed by marketing. It was/is an above average vodka, but not near the best. Kind of like putters, if you learn about them and learn what to look for, you may know about putters in great, accurate details. Marketing may make some seem better than others, but that does not make all putters who market/advertise with success into bad golf clubs. They are what they are with or without the advertising.

As for who can taste the difference in a vodka in a mixed drink, depends if you are drinking a cape cod, a screw driver, or a great martini. Those that know how to drink can tell you when and how to taste a difference. A discerning golfer/drinker can tell the difference between quality and crap.

As for taking the cute girl in accounting home, you can pull it off ordering her well and tonic if you have the game to pull it off, kind of like having confidence in your game on the golf course.

Believe it or not, some things are worth their price tag. A nice Lexus, a Tag or Omega, 18 yr old single barrel McCallen's, all are worth it. Some people display their class and wealth envy by saying "My Seiko is just as good as your Omega", and those people are correct.....in their mind. However, to others, the cost of working hard and then buying an expensive object is its own reward, which makes them appreciate the object even more.

It has been my experience that those that decry the loudest what a "rip-off" expensive items are, whether BMW, Breitling, or a Opus X cigar, are usually the people that can least ever afford the item.

As for me, I play a Cameron because I like it, it fits me like a glove, and I appreciate his quality. I could care less is someone else plays his putters because of the name brand. I do what is best for me. But then I am secure in who I am and what I am. I guess some other people have to try to make themselves feel better about their lives by trying to attack others, both SC as well as the people that choose to spend their own money on his putters.

Scotty is a marketing genius and the Circle T's are legit. The problem is the quality of materials and prodcution of the OTR versions pale in comparison to what the real golfers get to play. But most of our games pale in comparison as well.

I think $300 is a lot for an OTR version and have personally been disapointed in the quality to the point I've had to return one to the shop for a repair.

Like the originator of this thread I cannot say I'd never own another (I've had three), but if I do it will be a Circle T. And while I play a Bettinardi and I'm a big fan, I'm willing to say there is a difference between a Tour Bettinardi in terms of material vs an OTR version, but both are outstanding from a quality of production standpoint and to me that's the major difference between the two.

Sounds like a bunch of haterade and people having an axe to grind. I have used a wide array of Camerons and like them. I also own a C&L and it is a very nice putter indeed. Have never had the pleasure of rolling a Betti or a Mills. After all is said and done they are all tools that will perform well in the hands of a skilled user. You can put a $2000 putter into the hands of an unskilled user and expect no better results than a garage sale special. As for TCC it is after all a Cameron website so why would you go there to talk about another brand unless you were looking for trouble? I say use what works for you and enjoy the privilege of living in a world where so many great clubs are available for your choosing. After all we all could have been born 100 years ago.

The Scotty Cameron phenomenon has intrigued me for quite some time.

So what causes the commotion that inspires people to collect them?

But does anyone agree the Scotty hysteria is slightly confusing and over the top?

I have thought about your questions most of the day.

What inspires someone to collect one particular designer/manufacturer of putter compare to another is a question that has many answers.

Some people like to collect the most expensive of anything they collect.

Some people like to collect based on what their favorite pro putts with.

Some people like to collect because they can see that something in a putter that inspires them.

Some people like to collect base on that item holding their value.

Some people like to collect because of the variety of items that are available.

Some people like to collect because of friendships they have developed within that collector community.

And I am sure there are more reasons that can be added to the list.

Being a single putter designer collector is a little like being a die-hard sports fan, you have your favorite team. But there are many fans that don't have a single favorite team. If someone brags on their team that doesn't make them a bad person. Though die-hard fans can certainly be annoying at times. If you choose to be a die-hard fan or not, one way is not right and the other one wrong.

I have been a Cameron collector for most of 10 years now. I have putter collector friends that are die-hard Cameron fans and some that are not. It is pretty simple to have both kinds of friends; you just have to treat everyone with respect. I have seen lots of people come and go in the Cameron group and I assume it is the same with any other group. Some people leave happy and some people leave holding a grudge about something. My unsolicited advice is even if you have been wronged, life is to short to stay mad.

It is pretty easy to find negative in the world, if you look it is there. In putter collecting you just have to choose what you want to focus on. The putter, the marketing machine, the designers personality, your friends likes and dislikes or what makes you happy.

If you decide to collect what makes you happy it shouldn't really matter what anyone else opinion is.

I hope my reply hasn't added to your confusion. Any hobby should be just a small part of a well rounded life.

Good luck

Greg
