Frequency Match Irons w/o Reshafting

Is it possible to pull the shafts from my irons, (project x) frequency match then softstep them? I know im going to have to trim the tips some to match the frequencies but will this all work out correctly if i then dont butt trim as much since im softstepping? Execuse me if this is a dumb question im just starting to understand frequency matching and find it all interesting. I was just trying to figure out a way of frequency matching w/o buying new shafts.

Your quest sounds feasible. Make sure to put them all on the meter after taking the grips off to see how the current slope is. Maybe you won't need to do anything. I say this because they are already frequency matched to begin with. If you are just looking dial in a specific slope then you are on the right track. Experiment with clamping the butt to leave the offending 1/4 inch outside the clamping area and check the CPM. Don't arbitrarily tip one and not another. Tip them all or don't tip any. You will quickly see what is possible.

I don't go along with Clubshack on this one. First of all, PX are NOT frequency matched, despite their numeric designation - it's kinda deceptive imo. They are constant weight within fairly good tolerance, but the frequency can be all over the place. Secondly, if you're doing those Mizunos, they're .355 taper and tip-trimming will make it very difficult to achieve proper fit - in fact they may not fit at all without some reaming. PX, both .370 and .355, are supposedly butt-trim only. I've fooled around with lightly tipping .370 (and even .355 when they're going into Pings) - I think it's more trouble than it's worth. When I frequency match PX I start with three or four sets, and mix and match - it's a pain and expensive, since usually one of the resulting sets isn't all that well-matched.

 

Softstepping works very well with PX, but if you truly want to see a significant change you might like to softstep twice (3i shaft into 5i, etc).

Yea...my fault..i completely overlooked the taper tip of the shafts. Thanks for the responses.
