not sure about Austin but I lived in San Antonio and they have lots of nice course and the PGA and Champions tour both pass through there. Its about 45min south of Ausitn. I'm sure Austin has some nice course and reasonable prices at least compared to what we pay out here in California.

Great city though been there tons of times.

Come on up. Everybody else is !!! Just kidding. Lived here for last 30 years minus a 3 year stay in Florida(no bueno). Plenty of courses and you can not beat the weather. Right now the wind has been blowing about 20-30 mph the last few days but still around 68. Supposed to be 75 tomorrow.

For public/resort- Falcon Head, Forest Creek, Avery Ranch, Terravista, Lion's.

Plenty of CC's. Best I think are Austin CC, and Canyons at Barton Creek. 40 miles away you have Ram Rock(great course), Apple Rock, Slick Rock all three at Horseshoe Bay. But the two best are Boot Ranch CC in Fredricksberg ( about 1 1/2 from Austin max) and Escondido( Next to Horseshoe Bay couses but not seperate)

Those two are as good as it get's !!!!!!!!!!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Austin is a great city. I live in Houston, but I head up there once a month or so to go to a music show, or something of the like. The golf is great in the private courses, and there are some good public as well, but not nearly as many public courses as Houston. Barton Creek is the only private course I have played, and it was very nice.

Austin is awesome....used to live in Houston and Dallas. Dallas was awesome, but always said I would have liked to live in Austin (from visits)....in South Carolina but would move to Austin in a second if I could. Unless improved, traffic was very bad in Austin (have not been there in 3 years....and there was plenty of road construction so perhaps it is better now).

From what I played, agree with the comment on Private vs Public Golf. Private = Expensive and great....public courses I played were "ok"...although there was a Longhorn Club (or something like that) that was nice and quite a beast.

Good luck and hope you find a new place you call home that you like!

LOL. One of my cousins lives in Austin, and she hates how crowded it has become. When I go up there for SXSW, the amount of people is just unreal. Even during a more normal week, rush hour traffic is quickly becoming just like Houston traffic.

Lsutiger, if you move to Austin you will be by 2 big Golfsmith stores and a pretty decent Golf Galaxy. You are too big of a HO already LOL.

Rony, have you ever been to Houston? FAR more options than anywhere near San Antonio.

I've never played in Austin, but we did stop in Bastrop on the way home from Austin (about 25 minutes south on 71) and play Pine Forest. Aside from the fact that they had just overseeded and sanded the greens, it was a phenominal course. Of course, i am from just outside of Houston, where it is ungodly flat. But, the elevation changes at Pine Forest, and the layout of the course was awsome.

Great golf in Austin....but like the other post....we're full........j/k...i lived in dallas before and i think the public golf is better there (and probably San Antonio too). If you are going to join a private club Austin is perfect....There is Austin Country Club, Spanish Oaks, UT Golf Club, Barton Creek just to name a few.

Hello, No, never been to Houston. My Oldest Son lives up in Colleyville, TX, so when I visit, we play in the DFW area. Took a trip down to San Antonio to show my Grand-Son the Alamo and the Riverwalk. While we were there, we got in a few rounds of golf. Seemed to be a nice course every 1/2 mile. There were so many, I can't even remember the names of the courses we played. I did hear from Texas friends that............HOUSTON is HUMID!

What's the weather like in late March? Playing Ram Rock, Apple Rock, and a few other courses. Please tell me the wind dies down a little in March.

HOUSTON is HUMID!

Like nothing you've ever experienced. I remember the year I spent in Jersey, listening to people cry about how hot and humid it was. All I could do was laugh at them. it did get hot for about 3 days (it got up to 101, but humidity was pretty low). most of the summer was about 85-90, and 30 - 40% humidity.

Houston in the summer is unlivable.

.....says the pastey-skinned man up to his armpits in snow while I'm playing golf in 60-70 degree weather!!

Hot? Yes. Unlivable? Nope.

How true it is! I was miserable in jersey during the winter. Playing golf in 23 degrees on frozen ground is no fun. And going a couple of weeks without a round because of the snow was no better.

Get used to this...

Seriously, though - like the other poster said, if private is what you're looking for, Austin is very good. I haven't played many public courses there, but I have heard a few in the surrounding areas are pretty decent - Falconhead and Forest Creek are two that come to mind.
