Was able to pick up a new flatstick this weekend... and this one is a little different.

The head is referred to as the "617" and was part of a 50 piece run he did for his JDM distributor. I've never tried a center shafted putter before, by you can say I was "made an offer I couldn't refuse," so this will be a fun little experiment. Worst case, It'll go back to Byron for a Rincon neck... and probably a deep water finish. For now, I wasn't so uncomfortable over it that it needs a change, so it'll stay as is.

Also got hooked up with a JDM German Stainless headcover... All the black and red looked so good together that I couldn't pass it up. It has a black, standard size Pure Byron Design grip and **GASP** no shaft band! I'll have to remedy that the next time I head down to the shop... it needs a black one!

As for the head shape, it's very close to a 612... much closer to that, than it is to a 615, anyway. The main differences to my eye, other than the center shaft, are a slightly thicker topline and it's slightly wider (it's minimal, but it looks that way to my eyes). Outside of that, it's basically a center shafted 612... which is pretty cool. Plus it's German Stainless, so it has all that coyote blood mixed in...

The quick phone pics might be a bogey, but they're better than nothing (please excuse the ridiculous amounts of pet hair on that blanket). I'll try to snap some proper photos in the next few days.

Cheers,

Great pics. I have one like this that I may be willing to part with, if anyone interested. GSS and feels great. Bought a few centershafts experimenting and now have some extras.:)

I got my first Byron last week and couldn't be more pleased. My cat had to be put down recently so I decided to make a putter in his name, he was all black with a little white patch and I got his name "Tips" stamped in the back heel. This will be a gamer for a long time.

As an animal lover, I like this. I need to get my pets' names stamped on something. Anyone know how to get my putter in my vice without making any marks on it? I'd like to stamp the sole.

I've stamped several putters and by far the best method I've used is thick pieces of leather. Old belts work but a larger sheet is preferred. Vice pressure is still a concern here too, but heel stamping is the easiest in a vice. For the toe and further down I fashioned a cradle out of wood to support the head. One could probably use the vice and slide a thin plank of wood under the topline, securing the neck only with the leather for the entirety, don't know how it'd work, probably well.

I'm not sure if you've ever stamped a putter before but if it's your first time trying it, maybe on a nice putter is it not the best way to start.

I do know you have to hit hard only once or you'll get "ghosting" or the double stamp. I remembering reading (may be BS) that if you put a couple layers of masking tape over the area you want stamped, and hit gently enough to indent the layered tape it will help hold the stamp in place better (again may be complete BS).

I have stamped putters and wedges before. You can re-stamp the same area multiple times but you have to be ever so careful and skilled to do so without the double stamp occurring. Tape does help wonders and carbon steel is 5x easier to do than stainless. A rubber glove(ie Hyflex) is a must almost as well for hold the stamp in position well.

I've done my fair share of stamping and it's definitely an acquired SKILL. One does not just think they can do it effortlessly the first time. It is possible to re-stamp the same area multiple times and tape works wonders for re-seating the stamp properly in the same groove. Another tip is that carbon steel is 10x easier to stamp than stainless because it's so much softer. The quality of stamps is another big key to success, although I've used harbor freight cheapos with good results too. However, I would NEVER do an at-home-job on a custom putter, much less my DH89 Byron, never ever. I have done wedges and 2-300$ OTR putters though but hesitate on anything special cause the mistakes are costly and do/will happen from time to time.

No matter how good you are there are risks of a double stamp occurring, whether it be your fault for mis-seating the stamp for multiple blows in the same area, or a bouncing effect from the same blow. I nearly had all the P's single stamped on the wedge below when I accidentally mis-seated the stamp for a second blow and caused a double. I then HAD to go over each and every one again and MANUFACTURE the double stamp look on all of them to make the job LOOK right. Go figure....

My advice, get the proper tools, workstation for holding the work, and practice, practice, practice on an old POS before hitting anything worthwhile.

Edit: I just DID some actual stamping on my Byron, dumb I know, for taking such a risk, but the probability of failure was low and I HAD to see my envisioned design change come to fruition without sending it in. Pics below in a later post...

Probably should have ordered this as a part of the putter in the first place, but I nervously stamped three dots above the 'O'. I know I said modding a custom investment like this was out of my hands, but I took a big gamble. Wanted it to resemble the 'Tai' dot structure and mimic the Cameron crown stamp as inspiration.dd549f2120169deb054c751b6e8f435d.jpg

I plan to try on a cheaper one first. I've done lots of wedges, but it'll be my first putter. Luckily, I have way too many, so I have lots of choices.

Nice stamping in both those 89s

Though much is taken much abides;
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
