WHY DO I PUTT BETTER WITH HEEL SHAFTED?

I've been switching putters quite a bit lately. TM Itsy bitsy. Mills Softail, Kevin Burns 9010, Cameron Select 1.5, Yes Tracy II and an Odyssey #9.

 

I'm convinced that the grooves put a great roll on the ball. I think that Hi MOI putters help control distance better on mishits. I like the inter-changable weights to change the feel and to adapt for course conditions.

 

Why do I keep making more putts with the lowest tech putter?

 

Some of my other putters are heel shafted, why am I doing better with the #9?

Lol, it's probably more suited to your stoke. It sounds like you have a gated stroke while a putter like Itsy Bitsy it more suited to a straight back and thru. I putt better with the XG#9 (hate the insert though) than my Ping Craze-E or the Ping MyDay bronzey. I didn't like the Itsy Bitsy at all when I was playing with it at the Golfsmith Taylormade night some time back...

Good for you! Congrats for finding the putter design that matches your stroke.. "Low Tech" you may call it.. I think it's something special! Heel shaft fan too!

There's been studies done that show that alignment can be affected by what type of hosel you have on the putter. So a heel shafted putter *might* be the putter that you align the best. Also, Geoff Mangum over at his Web site is saying that he believes that the heel shafted putter is the at keeping the clubface square throughotut the stroke compared to the face balanced putters.

The exact same thing happened to me. Went putter shopping yesterday and the only club I did not push or pull was an XG #9 only problem is the insert causes me to leave everything short on the slow muni greens I play on. Haven't really seen too many heel shafted models out there besides #9.

I love to read about all of the different configurations and inserts and weight differences and so forth. Bottom line, it's a hunk of metal on a stick; maybe with some type of other material inserted in the face. The ball doesn't give a *&^% what hits it, but the player cares about feel and setup and confidence in the putter. SO, having said all of that, I concur with the above post; you have found one that suits you and gives you confidence in your putts and you are apparently making putts.

 

I have a nine year old MALTBY component putter (looks like a widened BULLSEYE head) that I built back in about 1999. It has a very hard polyurathane insert and a center shaft with NO offset and is toe heavy. When it is in the bag, I putt well with it, yet I insist on buying and trying other putters for more money (I spent about $30 on the MALTBY). I regripped it the other day and did one of my putting drills with it and it performed magnificiently. So why is it not on my list of putters in the signature at the bottom. It doesn't say BETTINARDI or SCOTTY and it didn't cost in excess of $200. Need I say more???? GOOD POST, BTW.

Seems true from my experience, I just got 2 new putters...Ping Karsten Zing(heel shafted, 5:30 toe hang) and a Ray Cook CP#2(face balance/slant neck anser-style).

I putt better with the Cook, while I seem to pull left mostly with the Zing.

I really don't know what I putt best with. Some days it is a #9 style, other days it is a standard plumber neck or flow neck newport style. I probably need to do one of the putter fittings and see which I do best with. I definitely feel that I putt best when I slightly open in the back stroke and close through impact. Anytime I try going straight back and through I tend to go outside to in and pull putts.
