Need advice on Fourteen irons

caller

Recommended Posts

:clapping: hey y'all!

I am considering changing my Callaway x-20 irons to Fourteen irons (whatever the model that is most forgiving in their forged irons)

I know they make high quality forged irons compared to other OEM here

Budget is not a problem but I would like to know if that is good decision compared to picking any Mizuno MP52 or Titleist AP2.

I shoot in mid 90's and you may think that Fourteen irons maybe out of my game level but wanted to hear your

opinion.

I am about 5'11", 240 lbs and can hit my 7 irons about 160 to 165 yards.

have a fast tempo too.

Thank you all

Scratch = American Company

Do a search in the forum. There are extensive amounts of praise and pictures to help guide you.

Good Luck! :friends:

Their irons are forged in Japan

I wasn't exactly sure where the forging was done but Scratch is an American company.

Sooo.... American company with forging done in Japan.

Yeah that's the ticket.

Those TC550's are pretty darn nice, if I didn't already have 4 other sets I would be bagging those for sure!

What would Tc550 cost me as a set?

Will this irons have enough forgiveness for my handicap?

It looks very nice but also looking low handicap iron

I reviewed Foruteen website and saw their hybrid iron HI550

would it be good set to replace long irons with this HI550?

So exciting to get this set up and wanted to hear your input!

my 2 cents...Fourteens are solid irons. Good "forged" feel.

I would not count out the TB1000 - I actually find them easier to hit and more forgiving than my Mizuno MP60's. I also hit them longer compared to Mizuno MP60's - same loft/shafts. I do get better accuracy and dispersion with the MP60's though. I find the the long irons on the TB1000s so easy to hit. I usually play with a 3 hybrid but when I game the fourteens I prefer carrying the 3i as I have so much confidence with it.

Stock lofts are a bit strong with a 46 PW. it created an issue with my wedge setup - I ended up needing a 50 gap instead of a 52 to space out the distance gaps.

I never hit the TC1000 but you probably should look at those too and not rule them out. Like I said - I find these really easy to hit and are pretty forgiving. I also have heard the TB1000 Prototypes - the cast ones are better in feel compared to the TB1000 forged. I am not sure if you can still get the proto's though.

Never hit Scratch but I have heard really good things on this board. I think there is a guy here that either owns or works for Scratch and I do believe they are forged in Japan - I think the guys name is Ari. So maybe look him up and send him a PM to get more info. I have been wanting to try their wedges for the longest time...

Good luck!

Am a 14 handicap and absolutely love my TC 550 Forged Irons from Fourteen. However for me, they came "alive" when I got the right lie/length/shaft set-up. Wrt the shaft that "turned-them-on" for me, and oldie-but-goodie: TT DGS 300.

They have such a strong ball flight. Deadly accurate, with phenonmenal spin on almost every on in the set. I rip back 8 irons !!!

Don't let the good looks fool you, super easy to hit with high-MOIL/LCG. Targeted at mid-handicaps according to Fourteen. Very versatile soles, with a mid-offset.

i am a 10 handicap and have played almost every club out there. usually go thru 2-3 sets per season. i bought the fourteen tc550 forged last october. played them for a little over a month and have to say they will be back in the bagain again this season. my searching is over for now. dont ask why cause i have no vailid answer other than they feel great to hit and look good at address. i had fujikara regular flex shafts in them and love them to death. i also play their v24 or chikara wedge with the same shafts.

you can purchase the tc550 forged for a decent price at tourspecgolf.com they will also accomodate you on shaft choices.

if u live in the USA you may want to try myclubmaker.com where i bought mine. both places are exceptional.

hope that helps you because the whole game is mental. when u hit the right club you will know it! :clapping:

The forgiveness is going to have to do with your angle of attack. The steeper your swing the more the fourteens will feel forgiving but I think if you are more of a sweeper then the callaways may be more forgiving. This isn't scientific but based on observation of club design. It seems like the callys will have a bit more weight at the bottom.

Oh, you know what you are talking about!

Yes, I am taking lessons to hit better iron shots and one of thing I am working on is taking slight divot with a forward leaning shaft

I feel little weird since I thought that was like chipping swing but not knowing enough, I guess I have to stick by what he told me to do.

I found it little low trajectory shots compared to before

I am going through the same swing change right now; my teacher refers to it as taking the club back on a flatter swing path so the downswing is flatter, more sweepy but still a fairly steep attack -- so my clubs are bent 3* upright. And, I tilt the shaft forward, like you, an he wants to see a little divot in front of the ball. Funny thing though is I am hitting the ball higher now and you say your trajectory is lower. Huh! Maybe that's a result of my lie adjustment. Oh, my teacher also has me addressing the ball with it in the hosel area since it seems I pull the club inward one ball width. Now I finally know what the sweetspot feels like. God bless this great game!

since my teaching pro got me set the ball to the back (right foot) I always feel like I am hitting the ball with

wedge set up!

But after seeing what it does and face of club directly pointing at my target now I feel more assured everytime I hit the irons.

It is starting to work for me

i have been lucky enough to spend two days with jim mclean one on one. He also is a believer in striking down and trapping the ball between the turf and the club. he has moved my ball position back and left my swing plane alone. i too, feel like a four iron is now like hitting a wedge. but you know what? it works. i have watched the swings of pros with jim on computer and they do strike down and extend into the sweeping position. if your body keeps turning through impact you must take the club with you. increased distance on all my clubs. he has a great dvd series out now called "the building block approach" which is an extension of the 8 step swing. he devotes one dvd to each part of the swing. the set is only $97 and is a great investment especially for us lunatics buying japanese equipment in the USA.

Fourteens are suposed to be good clubs, don't get me wrong, but if your going to spend that kind of money you'd be much happier with a set of Scratch irons pimped out the way you want them. Just my 2 cents.

I agree! I have hit some Fourteen irons in the past and though I do think they are awesome, I'd go for a set of Scratch irons over them any day of the week. For the price that you'd spend on Fourteens, you could have a sweet set of custom Scratch irons that all of us on this board would drool over. Check out the EZ-1 by Scratch.

How far back you would be place the ball as taught by JM? Normal I would place the ball in the middle of my stance for my 5 ironswith the hand slightly forward. Lately I have been hitting all my shots, particular mid irons thin, producing cut or low flyers. Wouldn't a ball back position produces a big divot or fat shot?
