Changing non metal putter insert color Macgregor DCT

Wondering if anyone has ever changed the color of their non metal putter insert. I recently ordered a Macgregor DCT Palma Ceia and the insert is less than appealing. I hope to remove the current color scheme and update. Not exactly sure how to go about it but thinking it might be time to get out my dremel polishing kit.

 

If anyone has ideas or examples I would appreciate it. I've tried searching the posts but see nothing out there.

Well I got the paint off and put a new color on but not to happy with the paint, thinking about spraying the paint on or using a different paint. If anyone has experience with different types of paints I would appreciate the info.

 

Step 1 used a dremel and tried different levels of abrasiveness til I got one that would just take the paint off.

Step 2 cleaned the insert

Step 3 painted it with a Liquid Gold Fine line marker(what I used to autograph kids bow when I shot archery) I don't know if it consider permenant but it holds up pretty good.

 

The fine line marker left lines as you can see but when I take my fingernail across it the lines create very little texture.

My biggest fear with it is that with a Dremel you might take a chnk or small bit out of the insert material. How did you make sure that it was not removing the proper "plane" (can't think of a better term for it) of the insert?

I started with a stiff hair buffer which wouldn't even take the paint off and then went to a little stiffer one and the 3rd one was an aluminum brush that finally would take it off but it was slow going. I used the slowest speed on my dremel with the pen attachment and applied as small amount of pressure as possible. I was a little scared but for 29.99 if I messed up I just planned to buy another. After removing the paint I cleaned it and looked for scratches grouges and such but really didn't see anything. It looks better without direct light on it, the lines on it really bug me it would be like letting paint half dry and then wiping it with a brush, the lines stay and the more I messed with it the worse it got too.

Would it have been possible just to paint over the original finish without all the Dremel work? Just asking because I just bought a B. G. MacGregor Sunset from Rock Bottom Golf and I too dislike the factory color choice, however I'm a big Grace fan and wanted to give the Sunset a try. BTW, great work you did.

Not sure, the first thing I tried was a black sharpie and let it sit over night and it rubbed off fairly easy. I thought about just leaving it that way and just touching it up whenever it needed it. The liquid gold pen I used states it permanently covers nearly any surface-weatherproof so a person would probably be able to just apply it to the paint and touch up as needed.

 

Most definitely less chance of hurting the insert and it probably wouldn't wear off that soon either.

I'm all done and so happy I did it. I like the new aim line so much better and really glad I replaced all the white lettering with gold

and orange. I also replaced the vrad grip with the ping blackout, at first I thought the vrad was OK but I tried my old putter and realized how much better the ping felt.

Nice job. I did the score line and the logo on my SUNSET in a light blue (powder blue) and it looks nice. I like the gold color on your logos, nice contrast to the manufacturer's color of the putter.

I do like the paintfill look that you did here. I finally purchsed a dremel recently from a Home Depot that is going out of business locally, got a great deal with 200+ bits as well. I think I am going to give it a try...so the liquid gold pen was the finish? How did you get it soo uniform after the first application?

I just did my score line, MACGREGOR and SUNSET LOGO in GOLD. I must have seen your post earlier and copied your idea. GOLD is a great color for the DCT but I had difficulty getting the color around the score line to blend in nicely for some reason. I used TESTORS model paint in the small bottle, it worked well.

It was very difficult to get it smooth to the point where I was happy with it. So I took it all off and purchased some spray paint rust-oleum metallic all surface paint (pure gold). It is so much nicer was a lot easier and I truly believe this is going to last a long time. I used 2 inch painters tape to cover the head and used a ink pen pushed in the outside groove of the insert and traced the insert a couple times. The tape then just peeled off the insert which left only the insert exposed, sprayed the insert a couple times and then I pulled the tape off while the paint was wet. Lay the putter down insert up when spraying and to dry so the paint doesn't run. Leave it to dry over night and repeat. I put on two coats and it really looks so much nicer. I wish I did it that way the first time.

 

Spray paint was 7$ and you have other color options as well.

I scraped out the old paint first and then used a toothpick and just did it slowly it was the least pleasant part and I sure there is a easier way I just didnt know one other than buying the bottle thing from golfworks.com which probably would have been way easier.

 

My hand wasn't steady enough for the paint brush.

If you really want to polish the face and get it flat, you might want to try this:

 

Get a smallish block of MDF (about 1 x 8 inches)

 

Using regular glue (like Elmer's) glue a piece of 400 grit sandpaper to the block. Clamp it against another piece of MDF until dry (8 hours is good if you are the patient type)

 

Use the new sanding block to work the face until you are happy with the flatness. You can move up to progressively finer grits. Auto stores that carry real paint will go as high at 2,000 grit. If you use that you can make metal shine like a mirror. The result for the non-metal insert will be that it is much flatter than you thought it was after you did the Dremel work.

 

This is just another finishing option. I've used this method to also sharpen chisels and wood cutting plane blades. It's amazing what you can do with $10 worth of sandpaper.

I used 150 grit "Fine" sand paper on mine and hand sanded very lightly. It was actually a bit surprising how easy the paint came off.

off topic, but how would you go bout changing the color of METAL insert? Specifically the pink insert in an old TM daytona?
