PING putter and different materials

GSS, SSS, DASS, etc....

I know that alot of high end/ Tour Camerons'/Bettinardi's etc. are made out of these more rare types of steel. Does anyone know if the Ping staff use one-off putters with this type of material? I know that lots of pro's use the good stuff from ol' Scotty, and there is that one rumor that seems to pop-up once in a while that Tiger uses Muira forged, not Nike's standard. I know that some pro's use the basic stuff as well, but most play with equipment a step above ours....well, most of ours!

So my question is simple. If say Hunter Mahan wanted an anser made out of GSS, would they do it? Have they done it? Or are they limited to the 303 Steel?

303 = GSS. Period.

As for pros using special putters, a lot of that goes without say. Much of the stuff can be replicated through PING's Wrx department (like tungsten weights in the face, different hosels, etc.), while others can't (Bubba's older titanium B60 with tungsten heel-toe weighing). Chopra had an Anser 2 where the topline was shaved down and replaced with tungsten to raise the COG a good bit. I also remember reading about another player who had a proto aluminum face installed in what I believe was a G5i putter. As PING's contract requires players to use their putters, they really do go out of their way to make sure that the putters work for the players. BUT they also do tons so that their putters will fit just about anyone without a contract as well. :good:

303 = GSS. Period.

I don't think this is correct: GSS = 303 stainless but not all 303 stainless is GSS.

GSS is apparently just marketing hype from Cameron anyway :).

Ping can make almost anything that you aks them to make. I have seen SS scottsdale (a one off, guy here was selling it), and Tungsten weighted BECU's...I am sure that if a tour player wanted something that wasnt avalible I am sure they could do it

They won't make a BeCu(or a BeNI for that matter, beryllium would be almost illegal to use now a days!)putter now for anyone, tour player or not. They should be able to use another Copper alloy, althought I am not speaking for them whether they actually do or not now.

The WRX dept. at PING is very very accommodating to say the least.

Give them a buzz, and see what they can do.

PS: I called them regarding the BeCu thing and well no refute here, they will not under any circumstances use that alloy for a new putter today, and actually acted very hesitant to even accept one made out of any Beryillum alloy to restore/upgrade/whatever. MangBronze however, they love it! ;)

Thanks for the replies so far. I have seen alot of the great custom putters WRX has done before on this site..I just haven't seen anything in those types of steel.

If they are just Cameron hype, why is that the reasoning people give for the high price of some of the CT putters?
