Players Irons

I will buy models that are over 3 years old so don't just recommend this years equipment

I'm currently in the market for a new set of players irons. I had decided on blades but as I near graduating I've decided to go into a PGM program (I will be going to a local college for a year before transferring into the PGM program). My handicap matters now so I opted to go with players irons.

There's not too many irons out right now that 'catch' my eye. I've hit some of the new ones but it just seems to me that I can hit anything just about the same, as long as the shafts are the same (TTDG S300s). Once the weather warms up here in Ohio I will be playing golf at least 4 times a week.

What do you guys recommend for me to look at? Price is always a factor and the cheaper the better. I'm willing to buy used as well. I've thought about trying some new shafts this year but am not positive. My driver SS is 106-112 but I tend to hit my 7-iron 155yds. My normal shot is a slight fade but I feel I should be hitting the ball a little longer (could be lack of shaft lean but my swing is consistent).

Opinions?

i noticed your getting a new putter too

try to give as much as you can as far as preferances go

for 300 on the putter you can get almost anything

ill say mp32's for irons, and some scotty newport/newport2

what you prefer would help though, any tendencies or preferances

you said a soft putter, if i had 300 bucks i would get a scotty tei3 newport2 or an original oil can newport II

and there are millions of blades out there and players clubs, what didnt you like about the pi5's, or just looking for a change?

I don't have too many set in stone preferences on clubs which makes it hard to be specific..but I'll do my best! I'm over hauling my bag but these too choices seem to be the hardest.

With these new irons I'm looking for a better feel and a thinner top line. I would love to play blades but feel like that would be a bad move on my part when right now what I shoot will make me or break me as far as getting into a PGM program.

The Pi5s are good clubs but the sound when you hit them and the feel/topline just don't feel right to me. I know that sound and feel are intertwined for the most part. The MP32's are a solid set of irons and I've thought about those but am not sure if it's too close to a blade that it'd hurt me in the long run w/pressure on the course.

there aren't many cavity backs much smaller than PI5's, those are really aimed at better players. I thought of mizuno right away (mp60 maybe, you can get great deals). But anything smaller and you're basically looking at blades

i agree, mp60 is a good recommendation, maybe j36 cb, or macgregor mt pro-c also, those should be fairly cheap, i can't say enough about the macgregors, very soft and forgiving, and are a steal right now, mac pro-c's all the way, you wont regret it

When I started to play the game seriously, years back, I was using Wilson 1200LTs which basically had toplines that looked like butter knives.. When my Pi5s first came I actually thought the top lines were huge..lol I've game these clubs for a couple seasons now and want something different.

I just feel if I went the blade route I'd be giving up shots which I can't afford to do right now. I guess I could stand looking at a thickish topline if the results were there. The AP2s have caught my eye but I'd want them in TTDGS300s and the cost is a little high still.

mmmm...

EDIT:

I'd like to keep the price range around $400. I will most likely be buying off ebay or even here in the BST section.

I just searched on ebay for the pro-c's and can't believe how far the prices dropped on these already. They look like a solid set of irons but I'd still like to look at some more options. The MP60's and 32's were also on my short list of irons I am deciding between ATM. Any other suggestions?

EDIT:

First off, sorry for all the edits :D. I was thinking of some more information I could add and thought of an important detail. Almost 100% of the time when I miss, I miss fat. Take that into account in your recommendations.

I was going to suggest the Pi5's, and then I read more of the thread and saw your sig. I actually still love mine; everytime I think I want to move to something else, I just keep coming back to them.

Anyhow, the times I have looked around, the MP-60's were always the ones I liked the most. Others that I liked were TaylorMade rac TP (the 2005 version), and the Bridgestone J33 CB.

I played with a set of MP60's last year that I won in a sales contest and they are a very nice and forgiving club. I cant speak to the AP2's or the I5's but the 60 can be picked up for pretty cheap these days. For me it doesnt matter because I cant seem to keep the same clubs in my bag for longer than a season....though this year I am going to give it a shot.

How does the forgiveness of the MP60s match up to the AP2s and Ping i5s?

All Clubs subject to change relative to my last bad round of golf......

How does the forgiveness of the MP60s match up to the AP2s and Ping i5s?

night and day probably sums it up best. The MP60 is as much of a players cavity as you can get. not much help getting the ball airborne, not much offset

the Ping I5 is very forgiving, significantly perimeter weighted and has more offset, despite somehow remaining an appealing club for all levels

I owned and played I5's for 4 years, and i have a friend that played MP60's which i hit many times when i briefly considered switching to mizuno irons

Get yourself a brand spanking new set of Hogan irons (2003 Anniversary Model) from Rock Bottom Golf.

http://www.rockbottomgolf.com/ben-hogan-go...-set-steel.html

I bought a set new (2003 model but not the anniversary) from the same company for $200 on ebay. They were listed for $269 but I made a lower offer and they took it. I'll bet if you offer them $350 (ad says to make an offer) they'd take it but if they don't you still get a rare set for $400 (your price range).

I have a set of player's irons that may or may not interest you. They are TaylorMade Burner Tour irons from the late 90's (95-98). Tom Lehman was gaming them at one time. They have Rifle shafts in them. (Stiff flex). Very good condition. I have been thinking about throwing them on Ebay just to unload them cheap. $75 shipped. Still in god condition. They do need new grips though. PM me if you are interested

Just gonna throw this out there Tourstage Z101's. great solid forged iron with little offset, less than my mp-30's. I really like them, and you can find them on ebay within your price. Also, I did see a guy selling some Exotics CNC Milled irons, and those things are sweet too. My brother is in the PGM program, and I have asked him several times why doesn't he play blades like we used too. He always reply's with "Why, I can do anything I want with a golf ball with this old 755's". My point is the people in the PGM program do not care what you play, they about what you shoot. If you really feel like blades are the way to go, then get a cheap set and try them out. No need to fix something that ain't broke, just my opinion.
