Scratch PDG grind

What's it like?

I have a brand new Scratch 58* JLM PDG wedge that's due to arrive tomorrow or Thursday.
I was looking for some thoughts on the PDG grind. I did Scratch's online fitting guide, giving my regular course conditions, shot tendencies, and they way I'd use a lob wedge, and the PDG grind is what it came up with. It's described as being an all-around good grind, and it visually looks much like the grind on my Vokey SM58.08.

I'm curious how this grind is working for y'all and also if anyone can compare it to the Vokey's grind?

I can't compare it to vokey cuz I haven't played one for a while but I would compare it to a cleveland 900 low bounce or a toned down version of the Cleveland DSG, it's a sweet grind for a picker like me! I have it in a 53* and a 58* but I ordered a 58* LBE that I got fit for to replace the 58* pdg.

I got the club today, and the grind looks similar to the Vokey, but the sole seems a bit narrower and has a tighter radius. There's also a bit more relief at the back. Looks like it'll work nicely.

 

On a side note, I used to use a 588 DSG like you mentioned, but it dug too easily (only 3* bounce). But I think it could be nice in a much milder version such as the Scratch.

 

I'm curious, did you have an issue with the PDG grind or did you just want to switch to the LBE?

No issues, I had it already in my 58 just from fitting myself off the site. Then I figured I needed a gap wedge and should really go get fitted since they are only a couple hours away. I hit a ton of wedges and decided on the pdg for my gap and after stacking ball after ball around the flag from every where with the lbe I had to pull the trigger on that. I'm still using my pdg 58 till my lbe gets here and could happily play that for a long time too! I should have clarified on the comparison to the cleveland's. I too had some problems digging with both of them but the pdg doesn't have that problem.

Yeah, I tended to have problems digging with my 588 DGS and CG10, and it bladed it sometimes with the Reg. 588. The Vokey chunks it occasionally, and sometimes catches thin (not bladed).

 

I would head to their facility (I'm only 30 minutes out of Eugene) but I knew I couldn't afford to buy from them, so I didn't want to use their servies without buying the product. I'm hoping my own assessment will be adequate.

30 minutes, where r you at! I'd be there every day! Patrick took me to Emerald Valley and we hit a ton of short game shots at that practice area behind the range, it was sweet! Do get your lie angle checked, they seem to be a bit flatter than other wedges I have tried, which is good for me but not for others. Good luck I hope the grind fits you well!

I'm out in a hole-in-the-wall known as Marcola. It's kind of northeast of Eugene and Springfield. I too noticed the club's lie angle seems slightly different than usual (the wedge is also 1/2" longer than my Vokey). I'll try it tomorrow afternoon and report back.

Well, I took the wedge to the range today after my round and I must say I was very impressed by it. First of all, the feel is pure butter on perfect shots. (And fairly punishing on bad hits, and sort of moderate for mediocre swings). It certainly hits the ball higher than my Vokey SM, and - here's the part that impressed me the most - the shot trajectory was VERY consistent. The same swing produces the same shot every time. They're also very accurate - even moreso than the Vokey. Finally, I was pleasantly surprised how much spin that sucker makes. The grooves didn't appear that aggressive, but they still spin the ball a ton - about as much as the SM on a full swing and maybe a tad less on smaller shots. And again, the spin is far more consistent than they Vokey's. Overall, I'm 110% satisfied.

 

I couldn't try any real shots because they practice green had FIFTEEN people. But I did try some flops off the mat and the Scratch handles them as well as anything I've tried.
