A possible "Classic Golf" Forum?

Any interest out there?

From time-to-time topics relating to what could be called "Classic Golf" appear on various fora on this website. At least one such thread is active currently on the refinishing and restoration of classic clubs. There are many other topics that could also fall under the category of "Classic Golf" including stories about old players, modern equipment vs. classic equipment, classic golf courses, replays of classic golf matches on television, etc. Unfortunately, there isn't a central place on this site (or any other similar site) for people interested in these topics to discuss their interests. When topics like these with less than universal interest are posted in one of the more popular fora, they are quickly "lost". The Senior Golf Talk forum is not a completely satisfactory solution because interest in these topics are not limited to those of us of a certain age. Therefore the motivation for the following pool question:

In your opinion, would a forum dedicated to "Classic Golf" be popular to warrant requesting that the wonderful folks that manage this site considering and it to the list of existing fora. Please indicate your level of interest and add any comments you think appropriate.

Sounds like a cool idea. Classic for me would be about 1994 to today, but it would still be fun. Especially if you can get others to post pics of before/after jobs of refinished clubs etc.

Count me in. It would certainly be something I'd be interested in and I'm sure I'd be a regular reader/poster in the topics that cropped up.

 

Hopefully there will be sufficient interest to warrant it.

I would love it. Count me in too. I have a huge interest in vintage equipment, such as Hogan, MacGregor and I would be a regular contributor.

To me there would be a good amount of topics to be discussed and thrown around as Mr. Smith mentioned above. I hope there will be good interest.

I would be interested. There's a similar forum on different golf site I'm a member of, and while it doesn't get frequent contribution it's terrific to go back and sample threads in a convenient place.

 

The other day there was a "vintage bag" thread on this site. Posters were naming clubs like the 983K. I darn near fell over in a seizure of laughter when I realized they were serious.

Great idea - definitely something that would interest a guy with 45 years playing the game! Heck, a forum devoted to classics would give me a chance to relive the last 4-5 decades. Wait, that might not be a good idea...

Though my love of the game has not diminished,I still believe that hitting

a good drive and a 6 iron on a 400yd hole was more fun than a driver/flip wedge

I would definitely participate. To me there is nothing better than taking out a set of Persimmon woods, forged blades/wedges and some balatas and going to play a great classic course.

I wonder if there are any Marshals out there monitoring this thread? What do we need to do to convince the WRX team that we are a small, militant band of radicals, who cannot be counted on to do the right thing?

Today, I sent the following message to two Marshals (I think)

 

"There is a poll currently being conducted relative to the interest in a forum dedicated to "classic golf" topics. The response speaks for itself, I think. In just a few days, there has been a strong positive response and a very few negative votes. The comments are very supportive.

 

Is there any possibility that such a forum could be created?

I would definately try to participate in a "classics" forum. I also think it would be great to have all sorts of various information on classic blades, woods and putters in one place. It will make it easier for anyone to find information, and I also think that it would make it easier to share information (knowing that you're heard).

 

I bet there would be much more people actively participating in a forum like that than the poll indicates, just take a look at (for instance) the Ping forum on puttertalk.com. Most on the threads on there deal with old ping models.

Count me in. I took my grandfather's old driver and 2,4,6,8,E to the range yesterday and had a blast. It was funny to see how short I hit those clubs (mainly from my poor contact). The 100 yard Equalizer was quite the blow to the ego. The 120 yard 8 iron didn't do anything to help either. But the driver was way fun. Man that thing went low! If anyone was infront of me, they're dead. there is no way that thing got over head high very often! But I will definietly hit them a few times this summer on course. I can't wait.

I think it might be alright, but with only 67 votes and 25 responses I don't really see it happening. Why not start a few discussion threads for the different "classic" times (hickory, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc) and see how they take off? You'll need specific sub forums of the sub forum if it's created though. I can't imagine reading through thread after thread of people arguing about what constitutes "classic".

I think you just started our 1st topic. whats a classic golf club? I'm sure that would be a good topic.

 

Made me realize how sad it is today how drivers change every other year. Can you imagine what the younger kids starting out must think starting out. ? what kind of message does that send?

I hope that the proposed "Classic Golf" forum will be about much more than just equipment. Hopefully, it would explore many other topics. One that I hope we talk seriously about it the preservation of classic golf courses. There is a current thread that is talking about overrated classics such as Harbor Town and PH#2. I would love to hear from people who have played these courses and can tell us what is being done to keep these courses viable.

Having just cleaned what's in my bag, I guess I'd be interested too! Maybe "Classic" could refer to the time before metal woods became the norm on tour? perhaps pre-1992? Just a thought....
