I am a pretty traditional guy, especially when it come to new golf equipment (see signature). I thought the Niblick was a really stupid idea and butt uggggggglllly to boot. Then I made the mistake of trying one.

Please don't repeat this as my image is at stake here, but it was awesome! I normally chip with a 6 or 7 iron and this club only made that easier, way easier. It is pretty easy to dial in from 100 yards out as well. The heavy head is awesome in the rough and in the fringe around the green. It is several inches shorter than my 6 iron, so it was easier to handle around the green. I did not test it on really tight lies, but I don't think that would be a problem.

I don't have one my bag at this point in time and I don't know if I can do it - did I mention that is was uuuuuuggggly and has this yellow plastic thing on the back.

I have played one for a few rounds now, I have the 42, I am sold. I am a 3 handicap, so its not just for high handicappers. I always had troubles with a low spinning shot from the apron/fringe, this solves that problem. I know some people say that if you practice, this is unnecessary, maybe, but unfortunately I cannot practice as much as I like, I would rather play when time allows.

I started using this for only chipping, but it is nice from the fairway as well, low shots with a good deal of spin. It is ridiculously straight, very easy to hit. We have to get over the fact it is a chipper, much like the hybrid, a utility club, and makes the game more fun. I do not use hybrids, I can hit my 3 iron better, some people can chip with their wedge/ 7 iron, whatever it takes to get the scores down.

I notice you don't list it in your bag though? ;)

Hey, if it works for people then I see no reason not to add it to the bag. There are plenty of examples of clubs that were mocked at first, but have become commonplace in many bags.

Question for you Niblick users: do you use your putter grip and stance, or do more of a chipping thing with it?

(This is by far the worst part of my game, Pelz and Utley methods not withstanding, so this is an intriguing idea.)

putter type stroke from fringe and up to about a 50 footer. as long as i can make a controlled putter stroke.

for longer (use mine up to about 50 yds) then i pitch with it. i stay square when i use it for pitching. i tend to open up for sand and lob shots with "normal" wedges.

i use the 42* and its the first "wedge" that i've ever worn out the finish on the sweet spot,,, i'm way more consistent with the Niblick

i can hit it about 110 yrds, with a smooth swing. my normal club to yardage break-out now is

up to 50 yrds - niblick for all shots except flop

50 to 100 - 58*

100 to 120 - 52*

this has worked much better then my old setup of

up to 80 yrds with a 61*

80 to 110 - 54.5*

100 to 125 - 49.5*

and i used to do most of my chipping with the 8 iron

I have been chipping a lot with my 4 hybrid (choked down - putter grip) and I dont see how this is any different than that.  I think it is fair, because you have to lose a club to gain a niblik.

Is this club legal under PGA Rules?  Can I use in in my league play? Also, how is this club different from other "chippers"?

what yalls take on the niblick and what do you think it should replace. I think its a neat little club I would like to hit one. seems like it would be great around the greens

It would replace one of your wedges for sure, but which?  I would guess the one you use the least.

Either that or take out your 5 wood or 2 iron/hybrid and put in the niblick.  I think it also depends on whether or not you will use it for full shots.  I read that full shot distance is similar to a PW.

The advantage of the Niblick over a hybrid for chipping is twofold. The Niblick has a shorter and more upright shaft, so you can swing with it more in a putting motion and like a putter, it seems to give a bit more control than chipping with a hybrid.

Honestly, most of us carry a club we only use once or twice a round at most, whether it is a 3 wood or other club, this club is no different.

I use a modified chipping stance, not quite as open. I took out the gap wedge for this, I hardly used it anyways. I hit this Niblick about 115 yards, and it is bullet straight. Like someone said, the only chipper that is illegal is the 2 sided ones.

I just do not have the time to practice my chipping, I would rather play if I have time, this club is worth every penny. I still chip sometimes with my 54 deg wedge, my area of problems was a very tight lie, that I need to grab and roll a little. The rest of my shots are ok, most of the time.

I think I am going to try this thing out and would replace my 51* if i got it. the thing is that I use an 8 iron a lot from 100 yards and in and love it. is this club going to react the same way as that or send it higher, I know nothing about I need to just go out and hit with it

It has a nice penetrating ball flight, and it stopped after one bounce, the zip grooves really bite on a half shot. on a chip, it bites a little then rolls out.

Yes, it is kind of ugly, but the shots it produces are sweet.

I think i am going to have to give it a try, been playing with a 13 club setup for about six months and considering the amount of time i get to practive my chiping game can use all the help it can get.

That is exactly my thought. I travel for my job, sometimes 6 days a week, so the only open day I have I want to play, not practice. This club makes this so easy. I am glad I tried it, it is very versatile.

  • 3 weeks later...

Had the Niblick in the bag since the end of last season, really love the club. It is probably the most used club in the bag apart from the putter I just find it so versatile and consistant. Bravo to Cleveland for coming up with a bold idea and producing a club different and fun to use.

I'm glad this post was started because I LOVE my Niblick. I use it on every hole unless it's a tight pin or green with an extreme roll. I pull it every time because it's 100% dependable. You know exactly what it's going to do and it's always going to go straight no matter how far out. And you can't beat the price for a club that's this dead-on. It takes one bounce and then stops when hit clean. If some grass gets in between, it'll roll a little more. Can't say enough about the Niblick. Just wish it had a better name!

Went for the 42 just because it fit what I was looking for, if I want to hit a lower shot or bump and run with it I can just put the ball a bit further back in the stance
