For such a great club, I wish they would have included a neat headcover for it. I started out using a generic iron cover, but got tired of taking the headcover off that and my putter at every green. Now I just keep it naked and away from my longer painted clubs so it doesn't beat them up. But since the club is the bomb I'll forgive Cleveland.

If you can find one, the Cleveland HiBore ironwood cover works very well as a cover for the Niblick.

Had the Niblick in the bag since the end of last season, really love the club. It is probably the most used club in the bag apart from the putter I just find it so versatile and consistant. Bravo to Cleveland for coming up with a bold idea and producing a club different and fun to use.

Credit where credit is due. Although chippers have been around forever, I think Odyssey came out with the "next gen" chipper a year+ before the Niblick. Thery got beat on pretty hard for it too. Clevend did take it a step further with the multiple lofts and zip gooves (vs insert face) though!

It is 100% conforming now. It does have Zip Grooves, so if you plan on using it in the US OPEN in 2010, you will have to take it out of the bag!

Ahhh shoot... And here I am with my 20HCP just warming up for 2010. :tongue:

I picked up the 42 yesterday and put it in play today. This club is unbelievably accurate and confidence building. I consider myself to have a pretty good short game and don't need to rely on this club as a crutch but after a range session and a round I can't see taking it out of the bag - despite the wise cracks.

I played a 2nd round today with mine and I used it on a par 5 to punch-draw from 119 under a tree to 18 inches for birdie. The next hole I used it from 107 to pitch to 2 feet for another birdie. On the chipping side I had 4 shots to within 3 feet from 10 yard to 50 yards today.

This is a very versatile and reliable club.

Got a brand new one yesterday for our anniversary and put it into play today. Hit the stick once and the rest were close, Having trouble with distance but that will come. Not a big fan of anything outside of 30 yards yet.

In order to keep my "man card", I sharpied out that ugly a** orange rubber thing in the back and made the number 10 on the hosel black as well. Now it plays *and* looks uber-manly. :ninja:

I love this club, never I had a club that is so easy to point and shoot, I have been working on my chipping, and this club is so easy. Great from the fairway, nice penetrating flight, with just the right amount of spin. It is definitely not just a "chipper"

The 42 seems more versatile. I tried the 37, it it better suited for bump and runs. The 42 can be used very effectively from the fairway/rough.

42 has worked better for me, in terms of distance control, than 37. Great, versatile club.

Small rant--guys have no problem with:

bizarre shaped, enormous drivers of exotic materials that have interchangeable shafts, weight-changing mechanisms, and now other hosel adjustments;

irons made of multiple materials, a host of different cavity backs, different metal, or plastic, or rubber, or gelback inserts, hyper x faces and advanced cone technology, all with a wildly varying set of lofts and shafts;

hybrids with different shapes, different weights, and wings; and

putters with moveable weights, wires, wings, pipes, barrels, abstract sculptural elements, and shafts that can be anchored against a stomach or a chest.

And they dump on chippers?

I replaced the gap wedge, it goes about the same, but with a more penetrating flight, and it is bullet straight.

I've got the 42 degree model and took it out of its first try yesterday.

Around the green for chips it works really well once you get to grips with its trajectory and roll.

Where I struggle is on half and full shots as I don't get the spin others on this forum topic talk about. I agree it goes arrow straight and quite long (as long as my 9 iron) but I get loads of roll out and no check. I'm playing a NXT Extreme and so wondered if that was the problem. Any ideas?

Also, on full and half pitch shots, how do you guys set up? Do you lie the club flat (with an upright stance) as you would when chipping, or at an angle as you would with a wedge?

Thanks

I used the Nike One tour, or the Prov1 ball with it, and it hits and stops on full/half shots. On chips, it bites a little and rolls out. On full/half shots I play it like a wedge.

Try a more premium ball. It will help some. I treat short shots around the perimeter with a putter stance and a simple pendulum swing. Shots all the way out from there, I swing it like a wedge or 9 iron. Also, as with any situation, if grass is in between the ball and the clubface at impact, you're not going to get that checkup when it lands. Otherwise, it rolls out more and more less the further you're out. I love hitting to a sloped green facing me. It sticks like a dart. Hope you enjoy it.

My experience with this club after a few rounds is that it will not so much check up as drop and then roll out anywhere from a couple of yards to 5-7 yards, depending on distance the shot flew in the air and how you hit the club.

I don't think that the niblick is designed to 'check up' or roll backwards like a shot with a lob wedge or high lofted iron, the club seems to be designed to run out at least a bit on every shot. Account for this when planning your shot and you should be fine, it is more useful as a short to medium pitch and roll club than a short lob and check club.

I finally practiced on course one evening with this club from around 100 yards for 4 or 5 shots, it hits the ball dead straight in the air but on a much flatter trajectory than an equivalent iron (GW for me), with about 5 yards runout after it hits the green on a full swing shot. Not sure I'd use it much for a full swing, but that tells you how the ball reacts v. a GW for me from the same distance, which would drop and sit most times if I hit it right.

I think on those half club shots, the niblick excels much more consistently than a standard iron, which can be skulled or chili dipped easily. Certainly you can skull a shot with a niblick, but it is much much more difficult to do so.
