Daiwa iron set
Hey everyone,
I've had these irons for quite some time and am curious about them. I have searched around and found very little info about them. They are Daiwa Advisors with dark brown graphite TR Daiwa shafts and Golf Pride Dimple grips.
What are these? Are they Becu? How old are they? Are they junk? I have never gamed them but they are unique and I am intrigued.
Thanks all for helping! :D

I actually like those, the face looks like the macgregors with the diamond in cuts. They do look like copper too, I'm not 100% on that, but from the pic that's my guess. Those grips are pretty cool looking too, never seen anything like it. I know the company, and I think they still make clubs in Japan. Good luck, nice find. Probably won't see too many of those on the course.

Thanks, I think they're pretty unique as well. I just don't know too much about them. I wonder, has anybody ever played irons like these? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, old set made by Daiwa. Daiwa is still around...with the Daiwa name. OnOff is a branch of Daiwa geared for the younger golfers. While Daiwa is more geared for the older people with money to burn on the higher end scale. Shingo Katayama was one of their latest signed professionals for OnOff. From the looks of his game at the Masters, it was a good move.

As for the grips...SUPER GREAT grips! I loved the feel on them.

I have a set of Daiwa DG-201 blades sitting in the basement. Loved them for awhile then hit a bad shot with the 7-iron and snapped the shaft whilst throwing it at a tree. Never fixed it and like a true club ho I picked up a set of Titleist tour models and forgot all about the Daiwa's. This post reminded me of the clubs and I blame the OP for making me want to reshaft those sticks with NS Pro's and game them again.....will it never stop??? :diablo:

P.S...nice Daiwa's you have there :coolpics:

After seeing this post I thought I would go down into the basement and dig these up. It might of been about 1984-85 when I got these and played them up until the 2006 season. It took me forever to find something I could hit better or even as well. I am playing Macgregor V-Foil 565's now. The bottom three pics are my 3 iron.....that I could hit on the screws easily.

I was a bit of a Daiwa geek in my youth, so hopefully will be able to help a little here.

The Advisor range was Daiwa's top end 'players' brand. The most famous model of which was the Advisor DG273 blade which Ian Baker-Finch used to win the 91 Open. There were plenty of other good irons in the range too, including the 9101 blade and the Cavity Blade.

The GOH was (as it says on the back) based around a gradual (progressive) offset. The 'Lie system' script just refers to the fact that they were available in flat, standard or upright, which was a big deal back then! The colour of paint fill around the little scales icon showed the lie. I think Red was standard, as on the SRX irons in the other pic, blue is either flat or upright, can't remember which!

I don't think they were bronze or copper, I think it was just a finish. Daiwa tended to use unusual, high quality finishes on their irons, and would use other methods (such as the diamonds on the face) to make their irons look distinctive. Sometimes they looked great, other times... not so much! For example, the Hi-Trac Tour irons were beatifully designed, great playing irons, but Daiwa finished them in a dull grey finish and they bombed. If they'd been chromed they'd have sold a load.

The TR (torque resistant) shaft was Daiwa's middle of the range shaft, and wasn't usually fitted to Advisor irons, usually to the likes of Hi-Trac. It also came in a TR diamond model, which may be the one you actually have? It had a kevlar braid over the shaft, which crossed forming small diamonds, hence the name. It was a more upmarket/low handicap shaft.

I don't think the dimples were the original grips, although Daiwa did use them on other models in their range at the time. Advisor clubs were usually fitted with Victory grips.

I'm not sure exactly when these were launched, probably late Eighties, early Nineties. They weren't cheap, Daiwa graphites never were, but they were usually good! Maybe about £600 or so.

Hope this helps!

Wow!
Thanks Wayside for the info. It is much appreciated. I have thought about selling these for quite a while, but every time I pick them up, I can't bring myself to do it. They are fun to play with (although sparingly). They're unique and I guess I enjoy having irons that not many others have. They need to be regripped, but I love the Dimples! I wonder if Golf Pride could make a new batch? I doubt it. :) Thanks again for the insight!

Not a problem, happy to help! Sorry, I did kinda ramble on a bit

Unfortunately, I don't think you'd get a lot of $'s for your irons if you sold them now. A lot of Daiwa stock was cleared out at silly prices when they got out of the USA/EU golf markets. I remember Exceler G3 drivers which were £299 (high-end price back then) going for £29.

Daiwa graphites were market leaders in their day, but probably not up to modern standards. But as you say, fun for a game now and then, well worth a hit!

But as for liking the dimple grips... I'm afraid you're on your own there! ;)

Lol, I should have clarified that I love "looking" at the dimples. They're actually not that great to hang on to.
Thanks again for your help Wayside, and all others who have chimed in! :D
