moving away from ping irons

I've used ping irons as long as I've played golf started with eye 2+ and now have a set of ISI's which I've bagged for about 3 or 4 years. I'm really wanting to get a new set of irons, but is it wise to move away from the company that has treated me so good for so many years?? I really really like the look of mizuno irons, and I've looked at both the mx-25 and the mp-57...my ping alternative would be the i5. The thing I'm really worried about is the off-set of either sets of mizzys or the i5 compared to the ISI's, will less off-set really make that big of difference??

Have you tried the S57? I actually find them to be more forgiving than the i10. I never got along very well with the i5's. I'm a big S57 fan.

my problem is I'm about an 8 or 9 handicap, I've never official kept one, I'm just a little scared to try a "players" iron

I have the i5s. Best set I've ever owned. I ho'd a new set of irons every 2-3 months for 2-3 years before getting the i5s. I haven't even demo'd another set since. They work great for me. The i5 still has plenty of offset, I doubt you'll have a problem.

Of course, Mizuno makes a great stick too. If I had to buy a non-ping set, the MX200 would be on the short list.

dude, try the s57s! What are your reasons for being a 9? If its short game than you might be ready for a "players iron".

I love my i5s and tried i10s, but found the i5s easier to hit. I have an opportunity to play the s57s, are they really more forgiving then the i5s?

my weak points are my driving and putting...irons and short game are solid....I can't hit a drive straight to save my life...and i FINALLY found a putter I'm comforatble with, so putting should get better.

I started with Ping Eye 2's many years ago and when I got to a 10hcp I wanted to get more of a players iron. I went to Cleveland TA3's for about three years. I was due for another set and ended up with a bunch MX-20, MP-30, Cally X-Tour's etc.

 

I finally decided that I wanted a durable and somewhat forgiving club and ended up back with Ping and the I5's. I have been playing them for the past two years. I have even converted about three different friends to them. They are just an all-around solid club.

I had two different sets of PINGs and strayed away and always come back. The i5's are perfect for me, I don't have time to practice, so they offer forgiveness without the superGI look.

Agree with all of the above. Plus, if you keep irons for 3 or 4 years, Mizunos will look pretty beat up by then while the Pings will look almost new still.

 

i5's are great. Just make sure you get the right shaft in them. Alot of people dont get along well with the CS Lites. I was lukewarm on them, but after putting Rifle 6.0 into my i5's, I realized how bad the CS Lites are.

Stay with Ping.....anytime I leave Ping....I always come right back...just solid irons no matter what model....I recommend trying the S58s or S57s...

i was in the same boat. Played ISI for a season and then switched to the i5. the transition took about a small bucket of range balls. the i5's are actually more forgiving than the ISI despite the small, more traditional looking club head.

 

Then I tried to move away from the i5 and went to the s58 for a season. I don't think i really got the right shaft combination, despite some experimenting. Nice clubs, but i know that every round i would leave a couple of shots on the course from mishits that the i5 could have saved. So-- this season, back to the i5 with s300's.

 

I've demo'ed the s57's and they are great sticks... but don't fool yourself into thinking that the s57 or s58 is more forgiving than the i5. Even though they are a bit prettier, the i5 still has a classic rounded shape, smaller club head, reduced offset, but remains extremely forgiving and workable. In my mind, its hard to beat those qualities.

thanks for slapping me around a little and getting me back to my senses...I'm gonna go with the i5's. I've never bagged project x shafts, I'd like to hit my irons a tad higher, I'm a smooth iron swinger, but every once in a while I'll give it a go..I see the project x launch a little higher, but the S300 is the old stand by...

I would go with the Titleist AP1's or AP2's. The AP1's are a little more forgiving and the AP2's are more of a "players" iron.

I think you're making a good choice by considering a forged iron. Once you go forged, its difficult to go back to cast. Mizuno is a good choice, particularly the MP-52. You may also want to consider the Titleist AP2.

Every single time in the last 30 years that I went away from PINGS, and it's been many, I have always went back. I finally realized that I always played better with the PINGS. I will never play any irons but PING again.
