Updated with what happened

So, my iPod nano (4G) just broke, the click wheel only works when it is connected to a power source thats not the battery. here are my questions:

-How is there warranty coverage?
-How is Apple's customer service, attitude, repair speed, etc.?
-Is there a flat rate to get an iPod fixed?
-How easy is it?
-How long is the turnaround time?
-Would it be easier for me to but the headphones with the remote control on them? Is it worth getting it fixed?
-Will they fix a possible user-generated problem?

Thanks guys, all replies are appreciated. Hopefully i can get all this sorted out by early June.

I have had awesome experiences with Apple Care. I have had the wrist pad area on my macbook replaced twice due to staining, I also got a free battery replacement after 2.5 years after it decided to stop being recognized by my laptop. For all those replacements I took it in and got it replaced at an apple store, the first time I actually had my laptop back the same day, the other time I had it back the next day, so turnaround was extremely quick. I had actually talked to someone on the phone about the battery and they said it was a no go, but took it into the store for the staining and figured I would ask again and they were extremely helpful.

I did have a video ipod kick out a few years ago as well, that one I did through mail, they sent me the stuff to send it back and sent me a new one out. Turnaround was a bit slower due to shipping, but as far as I remember, it wasn't horrible.

i agree with *sigh*, i've had no problems with apples service. i strongly suggest going into your closest apple store though, as opposed to doing it by mail. sometimes your problem can be fixed pretty simply just by knowing something that you don't know, and the geniuses at the apple store WILL know it. depending on whether they deem it user generated or not, there may be a premium, but its really just depending on your apple store

Yes, the store is definitely ideal.

They will take care of everything much quicker, especially if you need a repair and they have the part in stock. All the genius' I have talked to know what they are doing as well and can diagnose most problems rather quickly.

i have an apple store 5 mins down the road, im gonna take my ipod there wednesday. anybody have my same exact problem? i can see that there overall service is excellent, but this may be something that needs advanced service,i guess you can say.

Bought the new chromatic nano for the kids for Xmas and one of the developed this problem with the click wheel.

Took it to the Apple Store and they replaced it. It is a known problem that has to do with using the wrong charger type.

The kids always play the nano thru an iHome unit that works great for the older series units. The problem described to me

was that the new nano needs to be charged thru the new USB cord or an nano 4th generation approved stereo device.

i took it to the store, and heres what happened.

we waited for a little bit becuase we didnt know we needed an appointment. thank god it wasnt busy. After a few minutes of looking and inspecting my ipod, they simply replaced it- just the ipod, not the headphones+cable. I dont absolutely need the engraving, so ill be fine without. it was replaced under the limited 1 yr warranty, good deal.

Did you mention the engraving to them? I'm sure if you brought it up they would take care of it for you, but then you would have to wait longer.

i did, except they said i would have to get it sent from cali. the engraving wasnt absolutely neccessary, ill live without it. yea, it looks cool, but my case is loaded with stickers, so there really is no point.
