Noun or verb (and other annoying phrases)

I am certainly not intending to offend anyone, but I notice quite a few people have adopted the reasonably recent trend of using the word 'golf' as a verb.

I hate it. 'Golf' is a noun, it's not a verb.

I don't golf, I play golf. I don't golf my ball, I hit (strike, drive, putt, chip, pitch, shank etc.) my ball.

The other one I hate is when refering to fairways woods, people (including comentators) don't say '3 wood' or '5 wood', but say '3 metal', 'fairway metal' etc. It's a 3 wood. Always has been, always will be.

The fact that it's not made of wood has no bearing. When was the last time anyone had irons actually made of iron? The same people who say '3 metal', are never heard to say "and he's only got a 7 Forged Mild Steel left into the green on this par 5 after a huge drive." or "she's just hitting a little chip and run here with a 9 Beryllium Copper and the ball back in her stance"

Now that I've got that off my chest I feel much better.

Does anyone agree/disagree?

1020 Mild steel is 99.80% iron and .20% carbon . . . That's probably more pure than the water you drink out of the tap.

 

I'm all for calling them fairway metals or woods, whatever floats your boat.

 

Just as long as it gets me on a par5 in two.

The use of the word "golf" as a verb has always been a pet peeve of mine. Just like you don't baseball or football, you play baseball or football. It's used so often incorrectly, even by the media and reporters, that I gave up on it a long time ago though...

Agreed, golf is a noun. Another pet peeve of mine is TV announcers referring to "a nice golf shot". Although it is technically correct is bugs me. We don't here about "a nice football pass" on Monday nights. I know I'm watching golf on Sunday afternoon ... just call it a nice shot.

Yeah, I've got a great weekend planned! First, I'm going to the stadium and watch them base the ball. Then, we're going to an Arena League game and watch them foot the ball. Sunday afternoon, I've got a tee time and will have fun golfing the ball. Do you want to go golf with me???

 

I am pretty laid back. Too old to get excited about anything. But on this one, I totally agree with you!!!! Nothing grates me more... nothing makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck as when I hear golf used as a verb. I play golf!!! We are addicted to golf!! My tee time tomorrow morning will allow me to enjoy the opportunity to play this game of golf! Gee, thanks for getting me all riled up this morning!!!!!

Totally agree on the fairway metal thing. It is very annoying. Judy Rankin and Donna Caponi are the worst offenders of this on television.

 

Another thing that irritates me are the golf snobs at the USGA that say 5-par instead of par-5. The hole is a par 5 dammit, not a "5-par". Will Nichols and Johnny Miller are the worst offenders of this phrase.

It is indeed a par 5, but I have to admit, I do like the term "3 shotter" for a par-5.

I agree, what other type of shot could it be? You are watching golf, they are playing golf, not like they are suddenly going to throw a 35 yard football pass.

Both forged carbon steel and cast "iron" is almost completely made of iron. So in a sence, almost everybody has irons made of iron.

Agreed - but plenty of players have played Beryllium Copper irons and even titanium irons came out a few years ago, and woods have been made from wood, metal, plastic, ceramic and probably plenty of other things.

 

My point was more just because a club is made of a certain substance, doesn't mean the name that has been used should be changed. My set has woods, irons and a putter - That's it.

 

I also agree that I hate hearing 5-par. Definitely Par-5. I have no problem with them saying 3-shotter either.

what about the term "from left to right" or vise versa. that one has always bugged me, where else is it going to go from right to right? can't we just say the ball is going to go left?
